I'm experimenting with the 'barefoot movement' to heal my ankle problem. Can I make it 10 miles in my homemade moccasins? I'm hiking to Sawtooth Lake while minivan camping in Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Idaho.
If you want to make yourself some sweet moccasins, go here: www.etsy.com/shop/earthingmoc...
If you'd like to see everything I use in my van, click here: www.minivancampergal.com
Welcome to Minivan Camper Gal! I'm Kelly and I camp and travel in a Chrysler Pacifica Minivan, doing part-time van life. Here you will find van build videos, tips on the digital nomad lifestyle, general travel vlog videos, and more. I'm into minimalism, and I eat a mostly plant-based vegan diet. I'm still learning how to do vegan vanlife well! I have some great vegan camping recipes to share with you, but would love some suggestions, too! Sometimes I stealth camp in the city, but mostly I like to boondock. Join me and my camper van as we embark on all the car camping adventures!

Good job Kelly! You should be proud of yourself. Yes, I would say that was a successful hike in your moccasins. The best part is that you gave it another try, just three days later. You will toughen up your foot muscles and ligaments in no time. You have a great attitude and a wonderful smile. Thank you for taking us on your hike in one of the most beautiful and scenic places in our country. Take care and watch out for those ledges! Steve.

What timing: I’m watching this after taking a long hike in the Adirondack mountains of NY. I decided to forego my heavy hiking boots and instead wore my very lightweight pull-on sneakers - what a difference! Although my feet are tired (let’s face it, a 10+ mile hike is not an everyday occurrence), my ankles don’t ache and my feet aren’t sore. I love to see you being kind to yourself and giving your body what it needs!

Hey Becky! Yeah, amazing that we don't need what we've been sold for so long, right? You might check out this book - amzn.to/3R2wBX9 I've just discovered Katy Bowman, and she's amazing!

I'm noticing as you're sitting on the rock dabbling your feet in the water that your cell phone almost looks like it too will soon be dabbling in the water. You might want to invest in a clip case that fits your phone. Now I'm hands, and pocket free of my cell because it's always handy clipped to my waist. And I took can't wear hiking boots because they irritate my ankles, so I just wear a good, firm but soft heel walking shoe on my short hikes. BTW, I love where you're at! Thanks for bringing us along.

Hey Marion! Well.. I did cut out the part where an ENTIRE girls camp was hiking in front of me, singing camp songs, lol! But, I was happy the lakes were pretty quiet. Thanks for watching!

I wonder if elevating your feet at rest stops might take some of the edge off. I like the way you assess things when you try them out!

I love a nice moccasin when I arrive at camp after a long hike. I too, find heavy over the ankle style hiking boots to be restrictive but have found that a good pair of trail running shoes is a good happy medium. Building muscles in your feet is good but a rocky trail is t the best place to do so. While rock bruises may not cause permanent damage, you are triggering inflammation in order to heal. That inflammatory process happening in close proximity to the ankle can further complicate that ankle issue. Find something that is a happy medium. Your filming was terrific and what a beautiful place!

Thanks for watching! Hm... yeah, good tip about the inflammation, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the scenery!

I tried barefooting for about six months and discovered that it wasn't for me. I often couldn't walk without pain, especially after completing 4 or 5 miles in a day. It also made me develop a new intense pain in an old metatarsal fracture site. I have had foot pain and overpronation that makes me trip and fall since toddlerhood. I wore corrective shoes from age 4-10, which made a huge difference. Anyway, I am back in Moab Merrells and Birks and plan to wear them until I die. I know all the arguments for barefooting, but Merrells and Birks prevent most of my foot pain and 95% of my falls. I broke my wrist from a fall three weeks ago--yah, it's like that. My feet are insanely small, 36 Eu. If barefooting works for you, that's wonderful. That's a beautiful area to hike.

Hey Suzy! Oh wow - it's awesome you gave it a try though! Sorry about your wrist - I've had major wrist problems for the last 3 years, no fun at all. You might check out this book: amzn.to/3R2wBX9. I just discovered Katy Bowman, and she's awesome. She also says barefooting isn't for everyone, but gives some great strengthening exercises and some tips on how to start correcting problems. Thanks for watching!

It’s two months after you posted this so you may not see this comment. I have switched to Altra trail runners and wear them all the time now. I get what you are trying to accomplish! It took me time but gradually my feet and ankle strength have improved. I can no longer wear rigid “supportive” shoes as they cause pain within an hour or so. As I approach 60 I feel confident in my choice to strengthen my feet rather than just keep adding various supports through shoes and/or orthotics. My feet are better than they have ever been. Keep looking for your own solutions. My only suggestion is that you work more gradually 😊

Thanks! I just started wearing them a couple months ago. I'm loving them, and I think I'll probaby only wear moccasins for the rest of my life. I just made some dress up ones for when I have to look professional.

I am so confused lol. What were you trying to prove again? Modern shoes are much better technology than thin moccasins. Can you ace bandage your ankle maybe? Love the video and your channel.

Hey Billy! Well, more and more science is coming out that much of our foot problems are actually due to footwear. When I wear the moccasins my problems go away. We have 33 joints in our feet that are largely casted for our entire lives in shoes, and haven't actually ever functioned. Our feet have evolved as these awesome machines to propel us throughout the world, and our "technology," has resulted in feet being the most operated on body part. Check out this book for some cool science! amzn.to/3R2wBX9

Interesting question! I am really enjoying this again, as usual. Am still watching, not done yet, when I type this. When I did geological fieldwork, decades ago, I discovered that the sturdy heavy mountain-climbing shoes that I had been taught to wear actually put too much strain on my knees and didn't make use of my very strong ankles. I discovered that simple cloth sneakers worked better for me and also made climbing easier because they "empowered" my toes too. Your video also reminded me of a film that I watched recently, featuring a moccasin manufacturer! I'll add the link later, because I think that you may enjoy that movie. Laturrrr Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hcx1QdQTbyM.html Anthony Hopkins is in it, btw.

Hey Angela! Thanks for the link, the movie looks interesting! Yeah, I'm rethinking everything about hiking now - like how I can lighten my load more so I can continue to hike in the moccasins. Thanks for watching!

Good Job! I am wearing barefoot shoes from Saguaro usually during summer and go hiking with them in soft terrain. There are barefoot shoes for hiking I found out that have a slightly thicker sole. I will try them some day. I can not walk with them in cities with the hard asphalt ground. But it is so great to feel the ground that I put them on whenever it is possible!
