Barefoot shoes recently have been getting a lot of attention, but what does the scientific research have to say about the supposed benefits. In this video we break down the existing research on barefoot shoes to reveal whether it's just another fad or if it's a tool that can help us with our feet problems/injuries.

Never going back, 4 yrs now my feet are becoming like hands, its insane, the strength, the balance and youthfulness i have regained after 40yrs in modern narrow, heeled shoes. Barefoot is best for me

I have been walking and running barefoot whenever possible for more than 50 years (since I was old enough to start walking). My parents couldn’t keep shoes on me. I actually remember when my father reached his breaking point and yelled “Okay, just wear them to school!” As a result of barefootin’, I have magnificent healthy wide feet with high arches and toes that can move like fingers. However, I have always struggled with finding shoes that sort of fit and improvising ways to stretch them. I actually don’t like the name “barefoot shoes”. But I’m pleased that shoes are transitioning to a more natural shape and have been trying out several of them.

Both my kids wear “barefoot” shoes, we buy this Spanish brand called “zapatos feroz” and I can guarantee you won’t convince them to wear anything else 😅

I have been a natural barefooter all my life. The shoes would come off asap. I was late in learning that there were such things as barefoot shoes and when I did learn of them I just could not afford them. I saved and got a pair (on sale) and am sooooo happy. When I was young, in the summer time I did not wear shoes unless we went someplace you had too. I would be barefoot from time I got up to bed. I have one pair of barefoot shoes and one pair of barefoot sandals and have not had a traditional shoe on since I got these. I am so happy to finally have shoes that I can enjoy, still even these are worn only when needed and off asap. I am wanting to get a pair of Mary Janes for more dress up style. Funny thing, I find myself looking for bumps and such to walk on now that I can feel the ground, those yellow bumpy grids feel so good to walk on. Since I have been a lifer barefooter I had no transition with these shoes, it was no more then wearing a sorta thick pair of socks. Those who are not used to being barefoot all day long need to take it slow, short times to begin with and build up. You can not just expect to wear them like your traditional shoes if your feet are not used to moving in such a way, that is how you can hurt your feet. I would recommend them, and take your time transitioning into them. Thanks Mike for your videos.

Love your content. I jumped on the barefoot hype in 2010. I think there are positives. Now I use them primarily as a recovery run shoe to keep my form in check. They are also my go to for anything when I’m not at work. To each their own but I see positive results.

I've lost my respect for people in the shoe-selling business who say they are qualified podiatrists and then all they can do is recommend even more padding and support. They've no clue about how a healthy foot should/could work. It's the best landing system, but for feet to work they need to go barefoot style.
@CleverContrarian
@CleverContrarian 7 месяцев назад
A major issue that ought to be discussed and considered is seeing a podiatrist…getting insoles to better alignment in the same mould as dental alignment with orthodontics can make a world of a difference when you couple it with flat foot and front foot striking running (which barefoot shoes promote)

Yeah, i tried this and i ended up in the most pain in my life (seriously giving birth was more enjoyable) the only thing that gave me relief was finally throwing out all my orthotics and starting from scratch. Slowing over a year barefoot at home then barefoot shoes at work. I'll never go back.

I walk 8-10,000 steps a day. I've found that barefoot shoes are much better for me. At home, I wear low rise ankle socks only. I find that socks is what I would like to wear 100% of the time at home and away. Barefoot doesn't work for me as well as just socks. As soon as I get to work or to a store, I take my shoes off and just shop in ankle socks.

Would it be counter intuitive to wear barefoot shoes all the time BESIDES when running? The advantages of modern engineered running shoes (foam, plates, etc.) sounds worth it during runs but I wonder if training your foot to splay say 90% of the time then cramming it into a running shoe for runs would do harm.
@Tate525
@Tate525 6 месяцев назад
Running depending upon how many times a week you do it, is more of a high impact activity, it would deform your feets pretty quickly undoing majority of the work done by barefoot shoes. You would be essentially going nowhere with the progress, arches need active stress from the working feets to form correctly.

Ive had to take a few months off running because of barefoot shoes, and it wasn't even extensive running (only ran 3 times, 2 1 mile runs, 1 3 mile). In June, I started wearing altras on a half road, half trail runs twice a week, then by July I was wearing barefoot shoes at work and casually. Foot numbness problems started and I've been hopping shoe types ever since trying to solve it. It finally started to get better by January. I like wearing barefoot shoes, but I do think they screwed up my feet for a while.

Great video! It's kinda funny to think we've been walking bare foot for millions of years, but capitalism says it's bad for you (so buy are USD 100+ shoes)... And science can't confirm walking barefoot is healthy, even though we are born barefoot (!!!!)
@Tate525
@Tate525 6 месяцев назад
Science funded by Capitalism would never be able to find walking barefoot is healthy, the research will always be inconclusive. Because that's a loss of hundreds billions of dollars for the big shoe. There maybe a few outliers who may require shoes like the Altra's, but majority can walk barefoot and transition within months but they probably won't because they are too used to adidas or nike's.

I feel that many foot problems are caused by running and walking on hard surfaces. My PE teacher always told us that it was bad for our feet, so he would usually take us a park behind the school to go running. I believe that going barefoot can offer some benefits, but I don't think it's a solution for all the problems.
@tabin00

Exactly my thoughts. Our feet were not designed to walk on asphalt or concrete. In urban environments more cushion is better, especially if you heel strike. But everywhere else like grass, sand, soil, gravel etc barefoot is king.
@Tate525
@Tate525 6 месяцев назад
Agree with the take, but why do we also have to make the shoes unnecessarily narrow toe'd and high heeled if cushion is all we need to solve the issue. Shoes like Altra's make sense in the Urban jungle. Flat heeled (heel to toe 0mm) and wide toe box with decent amount of cushion.

I’m literally just trying barefoot shoes because thick soled shoes make me trip on any uneven surface and I wind up with sprained ankles and on the ground. It’s not fun. And it’s humiliating in the wrong circumstances. 😢 So I have arch supports because of my flat feet as I’m getting used to my barefoots.

also if you cant afford barefoot shoes, try going barefoot in late spring and early fall. (winter is cold and summer can be VERY hot if you're walking on pavement.) just take short walks around your neighborhood with no shoes. be careful for glass and such and be prepared for strange looks, but it does feel really good.

@@detmerhubbeling3955 They do fit nicely when running, though the toebox perhaps isn't wide enough. They adapt to the shape of your feet though Maybe that's a business opportunity for my future self, wide espadrilles

Hey folks, I switched to barefoot shoes about a month or so ago. I love them, my feet feel great. Only downside is now all my other shoes hurt my feet. Outside of work this isn't a big deal but at work I am required to wear a steel/composite toe shoe. I tried two different pair but they still hurt my feet. Any barefoot folks who could recommend a good work shoe that won't hurt my feet?????

I only wear shoes or boots for work in machinery and foundry jobs and then I buy 2 sizes bigger. No one should be running on concrete in any shoe. It will take a couple years to adapt to barefoot lifestyle because my gate is different than typical gates. Don't get in a hurry. This takes a couple years to transition. 60 now.
