Veteran Trainer JCP I recall in the 90s, it was basically nothing but a dream to get paid to play videogames. Game tester, that's all I ever heard of when the conversation would come up, but what are the chances of actually getting regularly hired just to test unfinished videogames? Now, if you've got the determination, the persistence, the right attitude, a good sense of humour, and just end up fitting into a nice little niche where people start to enjoy your content, it's possible to at least get SOME income from gaming. To make a living from it? I don't see it as being something that happens overnight. It can happen though, as seen by people like Pewdiepie and Markiplier. I dare say Jacksepticeye is making a pretty penny as well, but they're rare ones. To gain MILLIONS of subscribers... it'd take time and motivation for sure. Helps to make the right friends, too. If Jack never did vids with Mark, I probably never would have heard of him, and the same probably goes for thousands upon thousands of others who ended up subscribing. That's why I think the trick is to do it because you WANT to do it. Don't do it for money, or for fame, or anything foolish like that. As the days stretch on into weeks, months, possibly even YEARS that it might take before you start getting any amount of decent income, if all you're after is money, I think motivation would be lost in short order. Make the vids because you want to make them, because if you DO make it big, you'll be doing a lot of it. All the editing, the uploading, typing up the descriptions, keeping the vids coming in a timely manner, I'd LOVE to know how many hours a week Mark or Pewds spend editing, or if they've hired people to edit FOR them, how much time did they spend doing it before that? Just the fact that editors end up being hired tells you that the editing alone will become just about a full time job in and of itself if you're making quality vids while releasing them regularly like Mark's twice a day. So let's say I started uploading vids again, and let's say after months or years, I somehow end up with millions of people who are odd enough to find me entertaining. I'm pumping out 1-2 vids a day at least, keeping them high quality with lots of editing so that I don't seem dumbed down or boring in comparison to the competition, going to conventions to not just maintain/strengthen this hypothetical fanbase but to possibly grow it... if ALL this happened and gaming/editing more or less became my job, firstly, gaming would likely only be a small part of it. Half hour or an hour? That's nice, now how many hours of editing to add the intro (which I would probably have to hire someone to make for me), cut out any possible boring bits, change the camera's perspective if it's a vid with others, sync up the perspectives of course for both video and audio... Then there's the games! Personally, I'd say about 90% or more of my gaming is STALKER: Call of Pripyat, Red Orchestra II/Rising Storm, Civilization games, and that's about it. Sprinkle that with the remaining 10% that is probably made up by Oblivion, Resident Evil games... as you can see, I'm kind of set in my gaming ways. I'll occasionally try a new game, but it's rare that I'll stick to it for very long. I think that would get boring, to be a RU-vidr who only plays the same 6-8 or so games over and over and over. Even if I think a game would be shitty, it'd be a good idea to try it out, not only in the slim hope that I might actually like it and my judgement was wrong, but also it's fresh content, and that's where things get dodgy... doing things for the money instead of what I personally want. I think that would lead to two things; firstly, gaming for a living won't be as fun as I once thought it to be, and secondly, I believe people would be able to tell that I would at that point start becoming a sell out. Going for games that are popular even if I don't like them, trying independent titles even if they don't seem like something I'd enjoy, etc. That's just for Let's Players, as well. Rooster Teeth? They've expanded to epic proportions. Game shows, podcasts, anime, machinima, let's play, music videos, convensions... I think I went over all this in my last comment. It's just amazing to me that some guys making a silly machinima online could become... THIS! It's a lot of work though, and Rooster Teeth has had to employ LOTS of people to keep up with it all. Burnie, Geoff, Miles, Gavin, Barbara, Micheal, Lindsay, Joel, John, Gus, there's OBVIOUSLY more whom I'm forgetting, and some have even left the company. Ray, whom I was considering rehashing that joke that was going around that he died, but considering Monty truly did pass on while employed at Rooster Teeth, suddenly it doesn't seem like such a good thing ot joke about. There, that's a dozen people who are working, or have worked, at Rooster Teeth. Then of course the people they hire to make the sets for Immersion, the people who just do editing, and the like. If you want THAT kind of money, gaming might be involved, but it won't be a cake walk. YEARS and YEARS of determination. How long was Mark giving his 2 a day until he missed his first few days when Daniel died? 1-2 vids EVERY SINGLE DAY for YEARS, and he didn't miss a day until a good friend had passed on. I believe that's the determination necessary to make that old dream a reality, to make a living by gaming. It's not easy, but if entertaining others is what you genuinely love... it's possible, if you have the time to spare.
dwarfsteel1 I'm so fascinated by people who lack the attention span to read what amounts to 2 double-sided pages from a novel (seriously, open one some time, you'll be amazed at how many MORE pages there than than just 2), so not only decides to avoid reading it, but feels it must be shared that they can't be bothered to read a few paragraphs. I hope some day you overcome this deficiency, and eventually can actually focus on something for more than a couple minutes. Before I had gotten to your comment, I actually read those 8 paragraphs. I seen that 3 people had given it the thumbs up, so wanted to see if what I typed was actually half decent. You know what, I think it is, and I enjoyed the read. Anyways, thanks for sharing with us that you have a lacking attention span. You know what they say; the first step is admitting you have a problem. You're already on the road to being a literate member of society. You can do it!
+NormanMatchem Well, typically, you don't expect internet comments to be two pages long. Your words, mind you, not trying to insult or anything, many people just aren't in the frame of mind necessary to pay that much attention if they're in the middle of something else, and either he was still interested in what you had to say and was hoping you could summarize, or was just feeling bored enough to take the twenty seconds to say '2 long'. I don't think that necessitates insulting them. Then again, this is RU-vid...
Hahaha! If you pause at 0:52 and look at the URL, and copy that URL but with "youtube" instead of "mytube", it takes you to the "Odds Are" video, the other song on RT's channel by Barenaked Ladies. I love the amount of references in this video!
Plus, the video timer on that video on the screen is at the exact same point as THIS video :P That happens with EVERY video that's inside of this one. For some reason the length of those videos are 2:28 though, so I guess that was the original intended length.

What? I watch pretty much every Rooster Teeth video and somehow I'm just now seeing this 2 1/2 years later. Or maybe I was drunk when I watched it. idk.
It's such an oddly bittersweet feeling watching this knowing that Monty basically caused those two to happen and now this video is just a reminder of that.
I think the best part of this video is that you can Gavin's reflection in the screen in the beginning. The amount of detail in this video is pretty incredible.

RoosterTeeth is really good with these high production value, original things. I mean, their regular shows are good, too, but I really like when they make something that isn't necessarily already expected of them.

Aww. That was cute. Wasn't quite as funny as the Odds Are video but I still quite enjoyed it. Have to say though, definitely feel this is Roosterteeth's attempt at satire on "Viral" videos (unless of course it was BNL who wanted that)
I love this Barenaked Ladies and Roosterteeth team up thing thats happening. Everyone should check out the mini series that Ed did with them some years back. I think it was called Captain Dynamic.
