Domenico Scarlatti - Sonata in D minor, K.9
Daniel Barenboim's introduction (translation):
"When I was preparing today's concert, I briefly toyed with the idea of doing the same programme I did 50 years ago to the day. But then I thought someone might remember and say they enjoyed the other concert more than this one.
But if you will allow me, I would like to play one piece that figured in that first concert of mine 50 years ago. It's the D minor Sonata by Scarlatti."
Argentina has not forgotten him, this son of the city, leading conductor and pianist, and indefatigable campaigner for international understanding through the spirit of music. On the night of 19 August 2000, they came en masse, like pilgrims, to the time-honoured Teatro Colón just to listen to him.
At last their adored idol steps on to the stage - to perform again in his native city half a century after his first public appearance. The multitude rises and sings for him. Three hours and thirteen encores later, he can find no other way of disengaging himself from the ecstatic throng than to point out that the Teatro Colón must close its doors at midnight. One last piece, and then he goes - ending what has surely been one of the most memorable evenings in the Argentinian capital's concert history.

Very good, thank you for not abusing the speed. you could play this 10 times faster but you opted for a great interpretation. there is a time for fireworks and a time for musicality... thank you.

Actually, the tempo marking is allegro, so it should be played faster. He is free to slow down the piece, as it is his personal and artistic choice, but please stop equate slowness with musicality....

Nicola G You’re quite right, however in the 18th century, the ‘tempo’ markings were more often than not an indication of mood rather than a more 19th century metronome type indication of speed. In short: there is a far wider ‘correct’ tempo range within Allegro (or Andante et cetera) for Scarlatti than there is for Beethoven, Schumann or Chopin for example. Essere allegro/a in Italian actually means to be cheerful, or lively.

The Allegro is secondary to the preface by Scarlatti: "Reader, do not expect, whether you are a dilettante or a professor, to find in these compositions any profound intention, but rather an ingenious banter in the art to exercise you in rigorous play of the harpsichord. No point of view or ambition guided me, but obedience brought me to publish it. Perhaps they will be agreeable to you, and I will more willingly then obey your other orders to please you with an easier and more varied style. Therefore do not show yourself more judge than critic, and you will thereby grow your own pleasure."

Scarlatti himself wrote in the preface to the published Sonatas to enjoy yourself. Whatever your respectable taste, this is about Barenboim's interpretation, in that moment. It's not written in stone and was never intended to be played according to strict instructions.

Gould is interesting as always. But I certainly would not call Mr. Barenboim a horrible pianist. I am a horrible pianist, and I think I know the difference. If you honestly believe what you say, perhaps you could favor us with an explanation of why you have such a low opnion of the Maestro......?
