I love this video because being a barista has the stereotype of being a basic job to take before you can work your career, but it's interesting to hear from someone who aspired to be and continues to pursue being a barista

We definitely need to change the mindset in regards to working. Any job is a career, literally anything. No matter what the pay scale is.

I agree! I LOVE coffee culture and learning about new ways of making and handling coffee. I hate that it's been reduced down to a mindless/easy job when in reality it's full of passionate, knowledgeable baristas and actually requires a lot of experience and patience with the coffee itself and with customer interactions. Almost all of the more dedicated baristas I've worked with have been artists of some kind too. I always want to be involved with coffee, unfortunately not everyone believes that proper wages and pay are deserved smh. If I could barista as a solid career and have all my needs met, I'd keep my job in a heartbeat.

Understanding the grinder and understanding the effect of dose and grind on the taste of coffee is something that unironically takes at least two years to fully master, and that is with a trainer next to you. You can make coffee for a customer a hundred times right before their eyes and then tell them that every drink is made up of an espresso with additives and they will still be surprised. The point is, Barista might be one of the most 'taken for granted' jobs for how hard it is to fully master0

@@annaheya2109 maybe I can help you with some pointers that gave me deeper understanding of what is actually going on during extraction. The main thing to focus on is over- and under extraction. The first taste hollow, weak and sometimes even a bit sour. The second one is more easily recognizable as it is bitter, dry, smokey and can taste like aspirin. The effect of grind size on this is quite simple as grinding course promotes underextraction and grinding fine promotes over extraction. The effect of dose is a little more complicated. A high dose of coffee (20g to 40ml) will give a strong cup of coffee with a lot of body to it, but the flavor can be quite 'flat' it will be the same all through the cup. This happens because the water extracted a lot because there is a lot of coffee but also so much that the comexity makes way for body. A lower dose of coffee can make for a more complex cup because the amount of body in the cup is lower and therefore you taste more detail and flavor. If you go to far though the body drops completely and there will be nothing to 'carry' the flavors and the coffee will taste hollow. Moral of the story,: changing dose will change the balance between complexity and strength (flavor and body). Which is a very powerful tool. Now, you didn't ask for this so sorry for the long read. I don't know if this helps but it is in a nutshell what I teach my students. This is quite complex and text doesn't do it justice, also I'm no native English speaker but I do like sharing valuable knowledge. Anyway, here you go, hope it helps and have a nice day😉

I’m a starbucks barista, and i wish my experience was more like that of an average coffee shop. It’s hard to get that same feel when there’s so much going on constantly. It’s more fast food feelings than coffee shop sometimes. But I do very much enjoy it still

Any large food chain company is essentially a fast food in any other way. Starbucks is not for coffee lovers, it’s for teenagers who just want to take pictures or people who thinks they are classy just because they are doing work while drinking some oversweetened drinks.

I think coffee is like beer with regards to taste. Very few people like the initial taste, but like the other effects it has, over time our palettes adapt and learn to like the tastes, opening up a world of exploration
@Oracle_Ocelot
@Oracle_Ocelot 3 года назад
I also really wanted to be a barista as a teenager and even all the way through college, but never actually went for it. When I asked myself why I never did, I realized-as much as I love coffee and coffeeshops, it wasn’t about that. I always looked up to baristas because the coffeeshops I went to were always very queer spaces, and as a young queer person slowly discovering my identity, the baristas made me feel safe and welcomed, and created a space where I could comfortably exist as myself. Now I carry that with me and try to make myself a safe person for other people in my community-whether there’s coffee involved or not!

Being a barista for 2 years back then was honestly the highlight of my 20s. So many experiences, both good and bad, and as you mentioned, it's a special environment that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Customers who are saints, and customers who are Eldritch abominations, and everyone in between. I ultimately quit because of terrible management towards the end, but maybe I'll try re-applying at a new place after the pandemic settles

oof man I'm really sorry to hear about the stalking/assault thing - when I worked at a cafe none of my coworkers mentioned stuff like that (though who knows, really), but I know people who have worked at other cafes who that's happened to as well. Just a super fucked up situation. On a lighter note - I really enjoy watching bartending videos alongside coffee videos - would you ever consider collaborating with a bartender and trying to compare your experiences behind two different kinds of bar? Could be kinda cool.

What a lovely yet realistic video. As a long term customer of coffee shops, both chains and indie shops, I've been appalled sometimes at how people speak to and treat baristas, like they are not human. No matter how crappy I might feel, I'd never take it out on someone making a drink for me, it's awful. I've actually been given free drinks and snacks because Im polite and friendly, and helped out a rookie barista with some advice about handling awkward customers and the till etc, as I've worked in beauty retail. I can't go to coffee shops anymore as shielding, and I miss them a lot. I love real coffee, the smell, taste, and the simple joy of sitting in a nice, cosy cafe. You guys do a great job, it's hard on your feet, some of the ridiculous orders, rude people, constant activity etc.

I discovered your channel almost exactly a year ago at this point when I was at a very very low point in my life. Your videos gave me so much comfort and hope and inspired me to want to be a barista at some point in my life. One of the first things I did when I was finally getting better mentally was apply to a local café (I'm also a junior in high school haha) and after sixth months of persistence, I finally got hired! I'm currently making food orders and helping with the back of house, but I am so excited to eventually work my way up to the bar. I know you probably won't see this, but I just wanted to thank you for how much you helped me

I will be starting my first ever Barista Job on Thursday (December 16, 2021) and I thought I'd go here and binge watch your videos and I came across this one. Can I just say how beautiful and poetic this video is? I mean sure, watching you open a coffee shop, make espressos etc is entertaining. But the way you talked about your journey is really inspiring. It speaks to me. I have social anxiety so I am not good dealing with alot of people and ever since I graduated college I've always wondered which kind of work industry I belong to. I worked as an intern in a Hotel, I worked in events. It took me years to figure out what I really want to do in life. And this is it, this is what I want to do. Make coffee for people.

So true. On my sixth year in coffee and it's been a wild ride. I have experienced some of the lowest of society, even losing my faith in general goodness, but overall I have to say. People are kind of interesting and awesome. Both barista side and customer side. I love my job because I love being a step in people's lives and days. I love having the opportunity to learn my coworkers who often change as it's a higher turnover position, and I love being able to provide a great cup of coffee and seeing the customer's face light up for even a split second. It's a very unique job and it has resulted in so many close bonds that I'll cherish forever. I also can't wait to move on one day to another career. Great video as always!

I loved this video so much! I recently just got hired at my local Starbucks, and let me tell you the journey I went through. I applied three times before I finally got an interview. I worked across the street at the local McDonald’s from 2015 - 2018 and saw the Starbucks being built and open and was so excited! I remember telling myself eventually I’ll work there. So I applied, ofc as you can imagine I got rejected. But, that’s okay because I went off to college anyway. From before I went to university I was becoming friends with the baristas and the store manager. Well, now I’m graduated and I am now back home with my parents and to my surprise the baristas from this Starbucks still remember me, even after being gone for three years! So I got back and told myself, why not apply again. So I did! I got interviewed by the same store manager from way before and he offered me a job on the spot! I’m so excited to start my journey working in a coffee shop! I have a degree in theatre and plan on going to grad school in a year or two for theatre! I chose to work at this coffee shop because it works with my working artist schedule! This video was so interesting and made me even more excited!

I can agree about the customer service side of things but the good far outweighs the bad. I have been a weekend Barista for over 10 years, and I got my start because I needed a PT job and since I love coffee and they needed a barista, I lucked out. But all in all I love my regulars (some for over the 10 years) and even if I retire, I am sure I will have to go back every weekend for a while to see them :) And between you and James Hoffman, I have spent WAY too much $$ on all things coffee / espresso! Thanks again!

I've done this job before for 3 months during the Christmas holiday but the boss was rude and a bully which made me leave and found a different job.... Now I am going back to this type of work in another store because I loved making coffee for others, interacting with people and a small gesture of making them the perfect coffee that puts a smile on their face just makes the difficult times worth every second... Also there a high potential to climb a ladder so I can make a career out of something I once enjoyed and I am hoping I still do.

I mean it’s true that you can learn endlessly about almost any subject. I’m glad to go “all in” as well if I’m doing something :)

Whenever I feel like giving up on my barista career, I always look back at this video and remind myself that good things take time. :) Edit/update: I remember watching this video before I became a barista and as a new barista. Currently I am a fully trained barista of two years working at local cafes. Now im going to a job trial for a well known artisan bakery known for their coffee and pastries and hopefully getting a career from it. I revisited this video to remember where I came from, a teenager who wasn’t sure what they wanted to do in life especially in my senior high school years before graduation. Thanks Morgan for inspiring me !!

Im 17. I got my first job right after turning 16 at a Raising Cane’s. It’s funny, because before I got a job I said I either wanted to work at Cane’s (it’s my favorite fast food place lol) or as a barista because latte art is ✨cool✨. I worked at Cane’s for almost a year before finding a job listing for a newly opened cafe who was urgently hiring with no experience needed - just a friendly disposition. Time skip, I’ve been working there for about two months now and it’s great! Training was provided and I’ve learnt as I went - though I did get a 3 hour training course on steaming milk and doing art - and my art is kinda of hit or miss haha. I don’t drink coffee myself, and I don’t think I will ever be a coffee drinker - but I do love our teas and matcha. I think I lucked out on getting my job, especially since most coffee shops require at least some knowledge of coffee. Like Morgan said, the job isn’t for everyone, but if you really want to become a barista you just have to be persistent and patient and soon enough you’ll be making pretty coffees haha

While growing up in Brooklyn NYC, my mother was a real Maxwell House coffee addict, but I never tried the stuff until I worked in Miami Fl among a bunch of Cubans. They would take a few espresso breaks during the day, sharing thimble sized shots of Pilon made Cuban style in a 12 cup moka pot or an el-cheapo espresso maker (sugar overload!). I tried some, and liked it. Eventually, I saw a one cup moka pot in the supermarket and bought one, along with some coffee. Sometimes in a restaurant, I'd order a cup of 'Americano' black with just sugar. I never got really hooked on it, but a shot of espresso makes a good 'desert' after a full meal eating out, and a one or two cup moca brew with some heated milk is a nice wake up in the morning. I'll drink tea later on in the day.

Customer service does have it’s ups and downs! I’ve worked customer service in various industries since-well, forever! ;-) Some of the weirder things I’ve encountered still make me laugh, and there are things I didn’t laugh at in the moment that I can laugh about today. I definitely appreciate it when someone goes out of their way to be kind, and you’re right, some people are just the nicest-and it’s encouraging to know that there are still folks like that in the world. :-)

I used to work at dunks almost 8 years there and that was by far my absolute favorite job I worked the early am shift 4am to 11am and I loved my customers I don’t know how many times I was complimented on being cheerful in the morning vs being just there for the pay check. It didn’t matter to me if my regulars card declined or they forgot their wallet I’m not going to make you give me back your coffee that I have to just dump anyways. To me my coffee is what gets me going it’s what sets my mood my tone and my day. So if I could just make 1 persons day just a little better that was my goal. Why be grumpy and awful. Your the one setting your tone for the day and everyone around you. And trust me I saw it all and heard it all and oh my goodness the stories I could tell. But except for the drama of the employees which I hated I much would prefer to work in a small coffee shop the work is the same the good customers are the same they want the same things etc. thank you for sharing. This was just my little coffee experience it’s more than just a job and to the people who say we’ll your job isn’t that important any monkey can pour coffee yes that’s true but if we aren’t that important or an important business why do you keep coming back every single morning when u can brew at home? Oh that used to drive me crazy anyone can do it or during Covid not a necessity business I call bull lol 😂
