"Oh no, all of this ice cream is going to melt, I better get started! Now let me just take a few minutes to describe in detail half a dozen little spoons for you" 😆
I've found it also helps if you chew one lactaid and swallow another hole, and then chew a third at the precipice of "I'm starting to regret my choices"
I didn't even notice at first, but I thought, "ooh I should take a couple dairy pills, I'm going to be getting into the good stuff in the freezer if I watch this"
Make sure you have the kind where 1 chewable = full serving. 2-3 of those for a full size ice cream treat works well, but I can't take lactaid every day or it stops working for awhile.
I was about to comment this! It may not be up to Morgan's creaminess-standards but definitely the best coffee flavor! It's my gold standard for coffee ice cream. And when it's in the chocolate-covered mini cones? Perfection!
Exactly what I was going to comment!! It’s the best coffee-tasting ice cream I’ve ever had!! I can easily eat the entire thing in one sitting. None of the other brands can compare.
Ben & Jerry's has Brewed to Matter but i havent been able to get my hands on in YEARS even tho its not technically discontinued. Coffee ice cream, chocolate chunks, brownie batter swirl
Ben and Jerry's over does all the extras in their ice creams. Sometimes it is my mood, but usually it's too much. Also the ice cream itself isn't as rich and creamy as I like.
Private Selection goes hard! And it’s not crazy expensive. I used to get that brand all the time. The buttered pecan is also a very awesome flavor from them!
It's really too bad you couldn't find Ben and Jerry's Coffee, Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz. I've tried a number of the same ice creams you did and it blows them all out of the water. It's a really good coffee ice cream but has these fudgy coffee bean pieces in it. The strong bitterness of the coffee bean pieces coupled with the sweetness of the ice cream are so well balanced and incredible.
I made my own, heavy cream, wisked in stand mixer till still peaks, sweetend condensed milk, add 3 or 4 shots of espresso, blend into milk, add to whipped cream and fold in, pour into container and freeze, and enjoy, so yummie
Can you provide some measurements for that so I can try replicating it? I'm afraid that, without them, it'll be an absolute mess due to lack of experience on my side 😅
I''ve also done a coffee ice cream. I have had success warming the milk and cream with sugar and ground coffee, letting that cool over night in the fridge and then straining out the grounds before churning. Lovely coffee flavor.
Morgen, if the lactaid doesn't work well for you you could have an issue with milk protein! My son was very intolerant of milk proteins when he was young. I only figured it that when he ate a bag of chips that had lactose in the flavoring and he didn't get sick. Some times such an intolerance can be over come by removing the protein from your diet completely for a few years then slowly reintroducing it. Good luck.
My mom and I are OBSESSED with the Trader Joe’s Coffee Bean Blast! We are picky as hell when it comes to coffee ice cream. It has to have a strong coffee taste. For many years, it was Edy’s Espresso Chip, but it was either discontinued or something. We couldn’t find it anymore where we lived. There were many years of mediocre coffee ice cream in between. Then, Trader Joe’s came to our area and coffee ice cream nirvana dawned. Angels sing every time I eat it. 😂 🎶
I am an American expat, and I hate the cost of Haagen Dazs where I live ($10 a container), but I do indulge in the coffee and salted caramel at times. Half a spoon of each eaten together and you have a decent caramel macchiato taste to enjoy in the evening without worrying about not being able to sleep. 😋
@@lisanguyen6324 Unfortunately there is a very limited number of flavor options available where I live. A pint of the coffee and a pint of the salted caramel adds up to a significant amount, so it is a small luxury, but i do make it last as long as possible. lol
As someone else who would be in pain making this, talenti has a dairy free cold brew sorbetto that lowkey changed my life. No chocolate chunks, smooth texture. Highly recommend 👌
Private Selection all day! Their Pistachio Honey and Double Vanilla ( a great vanilla is hard to find ) are keeping with their coffee ice cream standards. Love this testing!
wishing you and your lactaid lots of luck after this experiment. i'm not even dairy intolerant and my stomach hurts just looking at all those ice creams. also, private selection is at metro market and pick n save stores (both are also owned by kroger) so if you're looking for it and don't have a fred meyers nearby those are some other places to find it
I literally clicked on this video just to see your opinion on Straus. I got some the other day and the creaminess is soo good! Probably the best I’ve ever had from a grocery store.
Lifelong coffee ice cream lover here...my #1 currently is Mauna Loa's Kona Coffee Macadamia Milk Frozen Dessert, such richly intense coffee flavor! Also a big fan of McConnell's Coffee ice cream with crushed espresso beans.
If I ever get to meet Morgan at a future coffee expo or trade show, I’ll be bringing along a giant box of Lactaid. It’s my way of saying thank you for your service😂 I shall consume double pucks tonight in their honour!
Spotting Umpqua and Tillamook on the bench makes this dislocated PDX native very happy. I can get (some) Tillamook flavors where I'm at these days, but Umpqua is pure PNW. ETA: As a side note, do they not make the Stumptown cold brew gelato anymore? That one was by far my favorite coffee ice cream for a long time. Even better at the visitor's center on the coast! Also, you can get Private Selection at Safeway as well as Freddy's. Or at least, you used to be able to.
I miss Umpqua and I have to search for Tillamook where I am now, but at least I can get Tillamook still. Tillamook is by far my favorite brand but Umpqua had a couple of really good ones I wish I could get again (they have the best chocolate peanut butter I've had).
Hello Tillamook employee here! Unfortunately the gelato and frozen custards got discontinued 😭 I loved the cold brew chocolate chip custard so much. Tillamook definitely has the cleanest ingredients and creamiest texture is comparison to other brands.
@@daphnescott oh nooooo! That makes me sad, but better to know so I’m not searching for them every time I go to the store. Thank you for sharing the info!
@@DarkTerrex admittedly, it’s rhetorical Umpqua Peppermint Candy for me. I don’t love the candy chunks in any peppermint ice cream, but theirs is a good ratio and the ice cream is actually a great level of mint that manages not to edge into toothpaste territory. It’s a treat on the rare occasion I make it back home now.
The Private Selection Coffee ice cream has probably been my go-to ice cream for the past couple years, its always super tasty and creamy and never disappoints. It always feels "right" as a Coffee ice cream.
My go-to is Cedar Crest's Daily Grind. I assume it's regional, made in Wisconsin. Great coffee flavored ice cream with caramel and lightly chocolate covered espresso beans mixed in.
I love coffee ice cream. My favorite to date is McConnells. It has the most intense coffee flavor of all I’ve tried. I’ve only ever seen it at Target in my area and I usually don’t get it at $11 a pint. But I indulged myself once because I heard it was the best. And it was amazing! Now I want coffee ice cream. I’m going to put Private Selection on my shopping list! Thanks for the video Morgan! P.S. Chewable Lactaids are the best!
Core memory for me is when I was 11 (in around 1998 I think), visiting the US for the first time (I am in the UK) and trying Ben and Jerry’s Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz. It was the first time I’d tried anything coffee related and that ignited my love of coffee flavour things, and later on, coffee. I remember it was just coffee ice cream with dark chocolate pieces in (I think).
It's always nice to view your videos. 1. You're pretty and upbeat. 2. You're analytical. 3. You're friendly, yet sensible and fair. This was more of that, which is great. My only peeve is leaving the ice-cream out on the bench for so long! I like to keep my ice-cream in the freezer as much as possible, so get it out, quickly scoop into a bowl/cone, then quickly put the ice-cream back in the freezer. I was stressed out, a bit, seeing the ice-cream just sitting there on the bench the whole time!
I felt the same way about the ice cream, but there had to be presentation to keep viewers attention. Otherwise Morgan may have had to edit in pictures of the labels while trying them. Also all the label paper tearing sound scrubbed at my brain with tinfoil. Not a fan of certain sounds. Still very much enjoyed the video.
this video could not had come at a better time, i ate my first ever pint of talenti coffee chip last week and loved it and now i'm on a coffee ice cream and talenti adventure
Private selection is a store brand so its slept, on but people are missing out, its good creamy icecream. Pistachio-Honey and Coffee have been one of my faves.
here in the philippines we have a brand called Selecta and they have Coffee Crumble flavor. It tastes like Vietnamese coffee turned into ice cream with nuts and chocolate chips 😋
My favorite Coffee Ice Cream has always been Breyers. I also enjoy Cold Stone’s Mud Pie Mojo if I want a real sugar rush and not so much coffee flavor since its has all sorts of mix ins with their Coffee Ice Cream….Oreo Cookies, Peanut Butter, Almond Slivers and Fudge.
Love coffee ice cream! I always felt there was never a more perfect flavor. As for favorites, I have so many! Trader Joe’s brand, black ring coffee from Long Beach creamery, Mcconnells Turkish coffee , and a Texas brand of coffee and cookies . So good!
I'm not surprised at the winner here. Just the other day I tried Private Selection's brown butter bourbon toffee ice cream and I must say.... I now have a new favorite ice cream and I most certainly was not setting out to change 30+ years of preference.
I remember as a little girl when it was just me and my mother. In our small little apartment enjoying our 2 pint uce creams. I always got blue bell ice cream and my mom had her haagen dazs, she called it her "grown up" ice cream.
Now that you have a dedicated space: any plans for a mini freezer? And I'd love a reverse episode as well where you try to make your own coffee ice cream (and maybe with a lower lactaid dependency for you).
There are a couple there I haven't tried, but I think you are missing the best one. 2 more to add to my list! I don't think it is available outside the midwest unfortunately. Kemps Caribou Coffee Java Chunk ice cream is one of the best. Such a great coffee flavor that doesn't just taste like gas station cappuccino with nice dark chocolate chunks in it.
Private Select makes some surprisingly good ice cream... I don't know if they still have it but they had a green tea ice cream that was amazing when you put a small scoop in a cup and poured hot coffee over it
I recently added Swift instant coffee to vanilla ice cream and it was superb, best coffee ice cream I've had. I think being able to add quality coffee without adding any liquid content really made it stand out versus adding espresso. I used one packet (5g?) to 200g vanilla ice cream and it was quite strong, which I like, others may prefer a weaker ratio. I let the ice cream soften on the counter for about 15 minutes, folded the instant in for about 5 minutes, then put it back in the freezer.
First time watcher of one of your long form vids ☺️ This was great! Private Selection brand makes solid products but I've not tried their ice cream YET! Maybe next you can include Blue Bell, Blue Bunny, Mayfield, and Great Value or Publix brand... along with flavors like French Silk, Mocha, Irish Coffee, Cappuccino, and the tea flavors like Earl Gray and Matcha. Looking forward to all of the food reviews :)

Talenti is the only "ice cream" i buy anymore. I dont buy it very often at all, but when i feel like treating myself, theres nothing better than getting a few flavors at the grocery store
My absolute favorite coffee ice cream is Richardson's, which I'm pretty sure is only local to Massachusetts. As far as a plain coffee ice cream goes, it knocks it out of the park
Very fun video thanks Morgan! Made me want to go buy a tub of Connoisseur Cafe Grande, which I haven't had in forever but have very fond memories of. If you can get it over there I'd highly recommend it as an ice-cream in it's own right. It may not be as coffee forward as others but is delicious nonetheless!
A few years ago I had some major digestive issues and while I was in the worst of it, I tried a bunch of dairy ice cream alternatives. Some were ok, but I got tired and couldn’t always get passed the overriding flavor of coconut or sunflower seeds (I don’t really eat tree nuts). I still have some issues, but I mostly just eat the ice cream, takes some tums, and deal with the fallout if I should be so unlucky.
I'm not surprised Private Selection won. Back when I still ate dairy, my favorite ice cream was Private Selection Truffle Fudge (I think "Fudge" it's been a few years) and I had gone on a crazy chocolate ice cream tasting journey similar to this video but chocolate and over the course of a month.
Straus and Acme brands were my go to before dairy allergies. I'll have to look for the Jeni brand to try. Currently non-dairy Cado is one of my favorites, the avocado really makes it creamy.
Great video, enjoyed it a lot!! (smol note on the side if no one has pointed it out yet... the Talenti text was 5.8/10 when you gave it a score of 7.8/10) I wish Graeter's Vienna Coffee was on this list -- if you can get a hold of it, I'd love to know your thoughts on it!
So obviously it differs by region but in NY theres a brand called Blue Marble and their coffee flavor is so good (as are most of their others) But Jenis is my wife and I's new love
glad to see haagen dazs so high on your list!! it’s the only one of the top 3 i have access to so i will definitely be trying it. i’ve enjoyed what i’ve had from them so far and they’re not too expensive!
one of my fav coffee ice creams is friendly vienna mocha. the coffee flavor is great in a sweet artificial way and the chocolate chunks are nice and big and taste so distinct i always wish i could buy the chocolate separately
Thank you for your willingness to endure gastrointestinal issues all in the name of science. 😀 That coffee ice cream from Private Selection is dang good. Years ago, a small ice cream shop in Seattle had coffee Oreo cookie ice cream. Guess what I went out and bought to mix in with it? 😂
As a diabetic, I can't really have any of these. Not without careful planning, and then only a little. So your medicating prior to tasting hits home. I can recommend Rebel Coffee Chip -- its one of those high-fat, low-carb, keto-friendly things. For those of us who don't have the patience to let it rest on the counter for 15 minutes, 20-30 seconds in a microwave works fine.
I have not met a coffee ice cream that I didn't like. But there are very few i really love. This is a taste test I would love to participate in. Also, give me a bigger spoon please. My taste buds (all of them) need to be thoroughly drenched with each spoonful.
Like everyone else you hooked me with the Lactaid, Thank you for taking one for the team. The Hagen Daz in the final group is the only one I have a chance to find so I am going to look for it this weekend. Thanks for the video Morgan
Ben and Jerry’s used to have a non-dairy coffee with chocolate pieces that was to DIE for it was such a nice coffee flavour and not too sweet I miss it dearly
I feel you with that lactaid opening. lol so… now that you have all those ice creams you should do a video showing how to make an Affogato, both classic and see how they turn out with flavoured ice cream…. And as I typed that you said you were going to go make one… lol it’s a sign.
Man, I remember just a year or two ago those Private Selection pints were a steal for like $1.99. Now they've jumped up to something like $3 or $4.99. B&J's is also too rich for my blood unless they go on super sale, plus their ice cream has carrageenan in it which tears my stomach up and shouldn't even be in an ice cream that pricey, but they used to have a coffee Heath bar flavor which was delicious when they got their mix-in ratio right, and wouldn't be hard to reproduce at home at all.
Ciao bella Espresso Gelato (back from 2010) was by far the most coffee-forward flavor with a great texture. Wegmans (grocery store; if you have one near you) makes a coffee/espresso ice cream that is superb in flavor but has the graininess of the coffee beans included.
I made a milk shake with just vanilla ice cream and moka , no milk. It was the best thing I could have ever made lol. So damn chocolatey and an amazing coffee taste.
As a forever HD coffee ice cream stan, I’ve ALWAYS wondered how other brands compare. When I would deviate from trusty HD, I’d always be disappointed. Now I’m definitely going to reach for the Strauss next time (albeit with some high expectations) 😋
So delicious (a non dairy brand of ice cream) has an amazing oatmilk coffee chip icecream. Its very creamy and has little chunks of chocolate in it. Its my favorite but i can only ever find it at publix in my area.
there was a ben and jerry's coffee and chocolate ice cream that was exclusive to targets that I think was discontinued a few years ago that was my absolute favorite ice cream. I havent been able to find a replacement for it for YEARS so i am very excited to try your recommendations soon!!
