I'm really enjoying the Reverend Descent W (formerly the HC or HC90). Coming soon, I will be back with the P90 bridge pickup swapped out for a humbucker. Will it sound as kick ass as I hope? Stay tuned! :)

Update, as of October 2019: a while back, I had their Railhammer humbucker added to the bridge position as I planned, and it's awesome! Makes big metal/rock riffs sounds great! Sorry that I haven't done the follow-up video yet, but I will... I'm going to make it a fun one, so stay tuned! In addition, I discovered that trying to use a plain third string (like the custom SIT set has), produces a VERY SLIGHT buzz on the third string, when you use high gain amp settings (for clean or very light gain settings, it seems fine). I didn't notice this initially, so my apologies. Also, like I said it has a very slight buzz, and I'm guessing many guitar players wouldn't even notice. I just have a very sensitive ear to these things. Also, once you add drums, etc., it's not noticeable (I only pick it out when I play by myself). Switching to a wound third string, which is what all other baritone string sets come with, fixes the issue. Reverend were extremely helpful in working through this with me, and it appears to be something that is inherent to the design. The solution for me: simply use another baritone set of strings that has a wound third string (now it sounds fantastic, and honestly I really don't miss the plain third string like I thought I would). Again, thanks to the team at Reverend for the attention they gave to this matter - you guys rock!

Darn! I just ordered 3 sets because I am in Italy!! oh well... I can always swap the 3rd string. But I' ll see what you talk about. I look forward to finding out all about the W. thanks for all the details. I hope my small contribution is not offensive. I hope that simply many folks give a little. ; )

I am so glad I came across this post. Great review by the way. The third non wound string. I have the same keen ear and also noticed it. Wasn't sure if was just mine or as you mention, inherent to the design. I'm loving this guitar but the buzz was putting me off, as the 3 string just sounds a bit "dead - choked" when playing acoustically, but not too much of an issue when its plugged in, but its still there. Now I know this is "inherent" and not specific to mine, I won't pursue the option of requesting another one to see if that's the same. I may also go the wound option also. Does the wound third string change the character of the tone at all ?

I just picked up a Descent R and I love it. I suggest everyone try playing one of these at some point if you're at all intrigued. I'm using the 12-68 set of strings but I swapped in a wound third. This makes a huge difference, in my opinion. I really didn't like the unwound third, and it wouldn't intonate either, even with the saddle moved all the way back. Perhaps turning the saddle around on the tune-o-matic style bridge would have done it, but it sounds a lot better with the wound third anyway. Great quality instrument; innovative and beautiful.

AWESOME NEW AXE. Glad to see you spreading your wings. Reverend guitars are some of the finest guitars available for the money in my opinion. I also think your idea of swapping the p90 for the humbucker is right on. You get to experiment with down tuning and now stay in tune and be in tune across the fretboard. Fun times ahead.

Lemme just say , dude ....if you aren't making money doing gear reviews , you should be. I can't tell you how many times I have clicked on a "marketing video" (via RU-vid) for an effect, a guitar , an amp ...whatever .... and the demo really SUCKS !!! Basically , people record these demos w/out any inspiration or desire to try to convey the products value. Loved the opening lick (FUNK COUNTRY !!) - esp. the bass slapping ........ KEEP ROCKIN !! \m/

Hey bro, thanks for the words of appreciation. Currently, my channel is not setup for ad revenue since I mainly do lessons of famous guitar solos and that complicates matter because I don't own the original music. That said, I recently set up a PayPal account for donations because it's quite a bit of time to put together these videos. Anyway, I do enjoy doing the reviews quite a bit... the only thing I feel weird about is playing tone examples... I guess it helps some people, but there are so many other factors that impact the tone, such as the amp, and our individual fingers and playing. In other words, it will always sound different when others play it. Thanks again, and rock on! :)

@PDXguitarfreak 4 года назад
Thanks! Yes, I did change the bridge pickup, and love it for big metal/rock riffs. If your plan is to play only clean tones or more vintage (light gain) rock tones, I say stick with the P90s though. The humbucker sounds good clean, but the 90s are just a bit better for that. Still, blending the bridge bucker with the neck 90 sounds pretty darn cool clean too. For me, this was the right balance, and I'm happy I did it. Also, please see my note that I "pinned" to the comment section this morning on the third string and what I discovered. Not a huge deal in my opinion, but I want to make sure people are informed.

Very helpful. I have a MIJ Jaguar Bass VI/Baritone with 13-80 La Bellas. It feels like a bass VI that way, though can cover some guitar territory and the overall tone is nice (have used it for very specific sounds on a few recordings, will keep it). I am looking for more of a true baritone than can cover a lot of ground between metal and surf/spaghetti western. I don't love the feel/sound of my Jag with heavy distortion. I know some metal dudes go way low, even lower than my A-A Jag, but I personally don't like any distorted chords/power chords lower than B, maybe Bb. I'm looking at the Reverend vs. the Blacktop Tele (27") to solve this problem (maybe even the budget Squier paranormal baritone tele). I like the idea of P90s, especially reverend's unique design. I also like how the Blacktop gives you best of both worlds with single coil and humbucker. I'm thinking PDX's plan to put railhammers in the bridge is the perfect solution (please direct me to his demo video of that post-install!). In terms of tunings, I really like to play around. I'll drop my standard length Fender Strat to drop C# but no lower. I have a mexi strat with heavier strings that I tuned to C# standard/drop B, but the intonation is too much. Interestingly my shorter scale SG tolerates drop C decently (actually open G with low E dropped to C - Steve Malkmus tuning). Wondering if the Reverend or Tele Blacktop could comfortably do C standard/Drop Bb (with the right string gauges). Thanks again for a great demo and for any feedback.

I am torn between the black humbucker one and this one.. does it stay in tune well with that trem? I thought the umbucker one sounded a little brighter actually through the stores orange thunder 30. but still like this white one... the neck also maybe have been a little bit thinner on the white
@PDXguitarfreak

Hi there, yes, I find that the trem stays in tune very well... at least for me :) Personally, I like the humbucker in the bridge position more for dirty sounds, and the P90 in the bridge position more for clean sounds.

Thanks Bob! I know Duane Eddy used it on some tracks, but I think the intro from Dance Dance Dance from the Beach Boys is a good example. In harder rocking territory, a lot of people think Back in the Saddle from Aerosmith was one, but it was actually a 6 string bass. There really wasn't a song or band that inspired me... I simply saw people here on RU-vid having fun with them, and that piqued my interest. :)

Hey Freak... one of the better Descent reviews Ive seen 😁. But Humbucker cleaner than a P90?.... Not sure about that.... PAF’s have always sounded a little “muddy” to me but Ive always been a Strat guy till my main guit-fiddle became a Strandberg Prog 6 with Suhr humbuckers which are clearer sounding than the PAF’s... So Ive got a Descent HC-90 oceanside green on b/o with MF whom I normally would not do biz with but they had 4 yrs no interest, sigh.... needless to say Im excited and should have it by 5/20/20.... I heard your demo after you changed out your pup but honestly its hard to base an opinion on pups till I hear em through one of my Boogie’s... In my old age Im playing more ambient style stuff so clean is important to me... Ive got a yuge pedal collection so I have many ways to add girth when I need it. Thanks for the demo and I appreciated your playing as well......being a musician makes the Kung Flu lockdown way more fun!...hahaha

Hey Joe, thanks for the comment! I have not tried tuning it down to A (that is, the entire guitar), other than just the low B string to A to see how it sounded. However, I recall reading others say the fixed bridge model is the way to go if you want to tune down to A, because a floating trem won't tolerate it as well.

@@PDXguitarfreak oh, ok, that might be the reason my Gretsch bari also does not hold an A well enough.
