Dude...that thing is a beast. I was looking at the bravo 1.25 but damn you make me want this one. Great video too.

+themahonster thank you, I almost traded it for a 1.25 and another blade...but I held it for a bit and there is no way I could part with it.

I own a version of 1,25LT. And absolutely love it. It is relatevly light, sharp as a razor. An excellent allround universal knife which is great as for wood tasks and for food prep equally. One of the best and favorite knives in my collection.

Great review. I really like that blade!

That's a lot of steel. I was surprised how well it threw sparks. Not the prettiest thing but in a survival situation you'd have to be a fool not to want a survivor in your possession. I'm sure in a real situation u will have a companion blade for finer tasks which would be my only recommendation. Kick ass vid, thanks for sharing.

I liked the imperfection in your farrow rode strikes, that shows that we all need to practice our fire skills starting a fire with a farrow rode is not that easy every time it takes some practice.

basically the survivor is a bravo 3 just shorter in fact i believe they took bravo 3 blanks and shortened them for this run of survivors.

For the size of that blade I'm shocked at how well it chopped
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 7 лет назад
In my opinion it has to do with the shape of the blade, the heft of the blade, and the grip i was able to get. I was literally putting almost no effort, its a great blade.

The 3V Survivor is my second Survivor. I sold my A2 Desert ironwood version, which was great. I haven't had a chance to test mine out in the woods, but the spine on it is sharp enough to strike a ferro rod. The Survivor is in my top five favorite knives.

The knife looks great and performs well. I always had an issue with Bark River and the spines on their knives never seem sharp enough to scrape a fire steel well compared to other makers. In the future can you check your audio levels it seems very low in this video.
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 7 лет назад
Yeah, so someone asked me to turn the audio down, then turn the audio up, blaaaah lol sorry about that. i will leave it how it is the next time...so pissed that I messed with it. Bark River def takes the edge off their spines for comfort but this is the first one I have had any issue getting sparks easily. I just ran it on my belt sander a very small amount, problem solved.
@chrisscott153
@chrisscott153 7 лет назад
According to the Bark River website the "thumb ramp" gimping is supposed to be used for Fire steel striking and the flat portion on the front of the "thumb ramp" is used for pushing down...
@firotechnics
@firotechnics 7 лет назад
The only issue I have with using the gimping is it leaves groves in your ferro rod which in my experiences deminsihes the performance. That's why I prefer a non-gimped 90 degree spine. Plus not all Bark River knives have gimping.
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 7 лет назад
+Kyle Johnson Correct, I prefer it as well but I thought it looked cool on this blade. I wont use it for my ferro rods, I did make the spine 90 degrees and it works great...i did a new video on the survivor after that. Thanks for watching!

baton on that log or some type of stable surface
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 7 лет назад
Yeah I saw that as i was editing, sometimes when I am doing a video I concentrate more on what I think the camera is seeing and less on improving my skills which is something I am working on for the next video. Thanks for the suggestion and not being a dick about it like that other tool Chrizzly Atoms. I never claimed to be an expert or claimed that I am teaching anyone, I am a beginner and I am self teaching each time I go out.

I'm looking at adding a Bark River. I'm wondering why you choose the Survivor over the Bravo II?
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 7 лет назад
+Chris Scott I liked the way it tilts forward a little to make it blade heavy and good for chopping. It also happened that it was the first production run in CPM 3V, and I was just curious. There weren't many videos out there for it.
@chrisscott153

Got my Bark River Survivor in 3V with green Micarta slabs today. Soooo nice. Cuts like butter. Feels great in the hand and with how far you can move you hand forward and the downward tilt of the blade I feel like I get a ton of control.

Great steel, nice sheath and pricey. If anyone wants something a bit more on the economic side, look at the Buck 124 Frontiersman. Similar size, sheath ok, and about a third of the price w lifetime guarantee. $150+/- and $100 for military and LEO, etc on the Buck web site. I have both...just throwing out an option.

Excellent video my friend,im collecting Bark river knives,earlier this year my son sent me one from Kentucky,the Gunny used it all Summer for field dressing Deer great knife,now I'm concerned about all the controversy with BR,and Mike Stewart.A lot of negative remarks and Vids about the knives.Any advice would be much Appreciated.Go Mora Garberg,stay safe.

I have owned many Bark River Knives, and Im not sure what negative you have heard but I have had nothing but great dealings with him. I have asked him many silly little questions about their knives and he always takes time out to answer and help me out. Their knives have a bomb proof no questions asked warranty and they are great knives. Hope I have helped.

@@enwin1912 hello Ed I don't think I'm being negative,it's like buying a top of the range car and then reading a lot of bad reviews on the car.I saw a couple of guys on RU-vid really bad mouthing BR knives,a vid of a Gunny knife chipping when the user was cutting a chopstick.The vid is still on RU-vid.Could you give me your opinion on it.I am so impressed by BK knives I want to collect them.BTW big Scandi knives fan eg.Helle,Mora,Martini.I have to say the Mora Garberg,that's all you need for everything.Stay safe.👍

Would you still recommend this as your main survival knife?
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 4 года назад
I mean there are hundreds that would work, but I love the steel, and I love that it can chop and has the choil so I can choke up and have great control to do finer wood work. For me, I will likely always have this and say the mini aurora or a smaller blade as well. Shorter answer is yes, I would grab this if i had to choose just one.

So why don't they make axes in 3v?
@TheLankyWoodsman
@TheLankyWoodsman 4 года назад
an axe is better in a softer tool steel IMO. It will give more being that it is for striking and not slicing.
@bjdunne5113
@bjdunne5113 4 года назад
@@TheLankyWoodsman so if you were ONLY going to chop with the bravo 3, 3v may not have been the best choice of steel?

@@TheLankyWoodsman your ctek is unique, but I found a nice one in green micarta on ebay. I understand it's discontinued now. I justbstarted to look more into BR as I havent been very interested or in the market for one of their knives before. But this ones a purr beast that I just want to invest in. Not just own lol.

Hi, thank you for making this video. I'm very interested in ordering a Survivor, but from what little I can find on the internet, the tip looks a bit thin to me. Especially when compared to the Bravo 1. I also read that the tip of the Grizzly broke off for another youtuber. What do you feel about the tip of the Survivor?

You will not have a problem with the tip on the Survivor. That blade is a tank.
