Barker Technics E-Bells, very little is known about this electronic bell, which was manufactured locally in Melbourne, Victoria by a company called Barker Technics. There are 3 versions of this bell, each with distinct features to tell them apart. The early versions were actually hybrid bells with the mechanism disconnected, with a speaker and soundboard providing the sound themselves. The earliest proof of this bell dates back to 1990, but it is possible the bells were installed earlier.
Later, Barker Technics came up with their own housing design, with the speakers being provided by TOA. This unique, boxy design became known as the Type 1 design, being distinguished with a faster ring and a higher pitched sound. Type 2s were similar, though the speakers were made by AudioTelex instead and the ring is slightly slower and slightly lower pitched. While they were never used much out of Victoria, numerous Barker Technics bells were installed across the Melbourne metropolitan network and also the Yarra Trams network, and there is also proof of one being installed in Geelong on the V/line network as well as the bell being approved by ARTC, though Barker Technics never saw use on the ARTC network. During 1997, they were the only bell approved for use in Victoria as newer e-bells were not available to use yet, and lack of spare parts, maintenance difficulties, and EPA noise pollution directives restricted the use of traditional mechanical bells.
It is estimated these bells ceased production around 1998-1999, when General Signals electronic bells were introduced in Australia and they became the Melbourne metropolitan network's preferred bell of choice across railway crossings. It is unknown whether Barker Technics still exists.
They are the only bell used on the Yarra Trams network, but they are slowly disappearing on the Melbourne metropolitan rail network, being superseded by GS bells.
