If you don't want to spend the big bucks for a frame spinner, you can extract honey for about $2.35. You can use a nylon paint strainer (which is reusable) and common household items.

Those Bee's were really hard workers. All your efforts really paid off. For what you said was a so, so hive they really produced for you.. Take Care.

ItsAlwaysRusty Hey Jeff, yeah, imagine if the hive were at it's capacity of around 20k bees.. the honey would be pouring out of there by the gallon. They definately are a hard working little creature... I will crack open the hive in a couple weeks and show their progress of cleaning up those frames and their filling up that new-found space.

Been an absolutely fun hobby and I am so glad I found the time and desire to get back into it. Stay frosty my Friend!

Rusty Glovebox I removed 3 frames out of the 18 that are in there... they have a lot of honey still left...We have a good amount of flowering plants for their pollen and nectar foraging, so they should be completely unaffected. I will check on them in two weeks to see how they are adapting to the larger space and see how well they cleaned up those three frames. Stay tuned.

How much would it cost retail to buy what you got out of those 3 frames? Great video. I bet that smelled really good. Did you by chance make a video on what you did with cappings?
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 лет назад
Love2boat92 Fresh and raw honey out here aint cheap... really depends on the time of year as to what people charge... I don't even compare the cost to the pasturized junk can buy at the supermarket. I rendered the leftover down to a block about the size of a bar of soap... I was going to, but decided i wouldn't make a video as there seem to be a ton of vids already on YT about how to boil down and render this stuff.
@Lanninglongarmmowing

@Mopardude 9 лет назад
Even though you ruined it for me and you told me what you got on the last video. LOL I am really surprised how much you got out of that! I always thought the reason honey was so expensive was because the yield you got wasn't all that great? Can you take that glob that is left over and reuse as standard bees wax or does it need to be rendered down first?
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 лет назад
Mopardude Actually there is a LOT of effort that goes into the final product...remember all the tending to the hive before I could even think about harvesting...and most keepers have hundreds of dollars invested in equipment, frames and hives. With that being said, a healthy and well populated hive can produce a LOT of honey in a season. This wax came from brood boxes and not honey boxes so there was quite a lot of debris and required me to boil it down three times before I could get 98% of the debris out... I could render it a few more times if I really wanted, but it's good enough....it's about the size of a bar of soap.
@buggsy5

When weighing the honey, put the bottle on the scale, then press the "Tare" button. The scale will go back to 0 and you can weigh the honey directly. Just make sure the scale can handle to total weight. For your 64 ounce capacity bottles, that postal scale should work, since 64 oz is 4 pounds and the bottle weight is tared out and doesn't count.

Thanks really interesting - will the bubbles rise to the top or is the honey too viscous for them to move? -If they move I assume the honey will appear to darken? Will the combs that you returned to the hive be repaired as new honey comb and they start to fill it up once again or will it be turned to some other purpose by the bees? Can the removed wax be easily be turned in to beeswax now?
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 лет назад
Dan Whiteford Hey Dan, I keep the honey in a cool, dry location in the kitchen, and the bubbles still rise to the top. The frames that I returned to the hive will be scrubbed clean by the bees and they will repair/draw cells and put them right to use. Depending on their needs, and the location of the frames in the hive will depend on what they put in the cells. I rendered the wax to remove all the debris from the glob. This was extracted from brood frames so there was a LOT of organics mixed in with the wax. I ended up rendering it three times to get it about 98% clean and that's okay for me. Typically you remove the wax from a honey box (where there is no brood) and you don't get nearly as much debris in the wax. It ended up rendering down to a block about the size of a bar of soap.

i have no knowledge about bee keeping so im wondering why you didnt scrape off those darker bits? what were they?
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 7 лет назад
The darker comb was not scraped because it was empty and there was no need to scrape it in with the rest of the honey. By leaving it intact, the bees can immediately reuse those cells and will have less to rebuild.

What do you do with the wax? Do you refine it? If you use it for projects. I would like to see them.
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 лет назад
Mark Thomas Hobbies This refined down to about the size of a bar of soap... This honey was from brood panels, so there was a lot of debris in it and it took three "renderings" before I got it clean. I didn't do a video of it, because there are plenty of vids already out there on boiling down the wax with water and allowing the solids to sink as it cools... My daughters want to experiment with this chunk...they will likely use it for lip balm or something make-up related.
