BARN FIND ŠKODA 105- Rebuilding the rear brakes

In this video I continue rebuilding the braking system on my Skoda 105 Estelle...
The car is a low mileage barn find that has been abandoned for many years and a braking system does not like sitting for long, so I decided to rebuild everything.
The calibers and master cylinder and rear brakes are going to be changed.

Another well explained vid. My uncle often referred to a 'special brake puller' and thats the only time we used a dealership. The front end was a bit light and you get used to it, but when you do have a bit of weight beneath the unorthodox bonnet it does help. TBH I prefer the unweighted driving as you know where to aim it. One thing is to check the thermoplug and that it works ok. Its a brass screw-in to the radiator which helps switch on the cooling fan. Of the three Estelles my family owned, this was the major weakpoint .
@MrSkoda105s
@MrSkoda105s 3 года назад
TRUE! lots of Škoda’s overheated because this thermo switch didn’t worked anymore. I’ll advise you not to use an original one as they all fail but a quality aftermarket thermo switch. Mine starts early, already at 85 degrees. Better safe then sorry. 😅
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Thanks :) I will remove the switch and test it... But I would like to use it if it works! I am the kind of driver who are always looking at the temp gauge, so I think it will be alright... ;)

You are perfectly correct about the word Castlenut in English. It's because it looks like a castle 👍 Strictly speaking it's called a castellated nut.

About that disc at 1:29: there's a magic trick with those too, which might come in handy: 2 holes are slightly larger than the other 2, they are just large enough that the nuts can fall through them :) so only 2 of the 4 are actually holding the disc to the wheel. When you're putting the wheel back, you can fix it in place with 2 opposing nuts, then put the disc on with the larger holes going over those nuts, and put on the remaining 2 nuts that will hold the disc in place. I love this feature, because you don't have to hold the wheel and the disc in place while you manage to get the nuts on, like on many other cars :) Also, you don't have to lift the car to remove/replace them, because you only need to remove 2 nuts.

@bencem.1862

Nice to see how fast it's coming together now :) There are at least 3 types of master cylinders, depending on model, model-year (before and after '84, with or without servo, etc.) even the inner diameters are different in some types (21mm first, 19 in later models, but the Rapids had 21mm types up to the end, etc...... it's just a mess :D ), so you have to be very lucky to get the proper rebuild kit, even if you know what type you have :D I can't recall from when excatly, but after '86-ish, the master cylinders are not to be taken apart - officially at least, that's why yours don't have the clip at the end, if it's broken, you have to replace it. It's available, and cheap enough, so i'd go with a new one :) You can try removing all the in- and outlet parts from the side, and if you're lucky, and the end of the cylinder is nice and smooth inside, the inner parts might slide out, but no guarantees. And, yours being from 88 (?), it's surely the 19mm type, so you need a repair kit for that size. And, to make matters worse, the rear brake cylinders were also changed after '86 (from 21mm to 19mm inner diameter), sooo if you have installed 21mm rear cylinders with a 19mm master (can't really tell, but they seem bulky :D), it might still work, but the stroke of the brake pedal might be annoyingly long. I unknowingly did that to myself once, and spent days trying to figure out why the brake felt so weird :D Btw, your brake-aligner on the right side is bent :/ i'm not sure it'll work this way, it should be straight like on the other side, so that the little spring-thing can keep it locked. Oh, and a nice trick: before you pull the drum off with the magic tool, you should release the aligner, so the pads are not pulled together with the drum. There"s a rubber plug on the base blate, just behind the aligner, for exactly this purpose: with a screwdriver, you can disengage the aligner, so it pops back to the fully retracted position.
@MrSkoda105s
@MrSkoda105s 3 года назад
Good to mention about the plug on the back. Makes it’s much easier. You talk about 21 mm. Assume you mean 22 mm? And not sure why those inner parts of the later types are so hard to remove. 🤷🏼‍♂️ but I’ve noticed that too!
@bencem.1862
@bencem.1862 3 года назад
@@MrSkoda105s Yes, you're right, wherever I said 21 mm, it's actually 22 :)
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Thats is really nice spotted! I wonder if I bend it by not releasing the aligner in the first place? Anyway, I am going to take the drum of and change the brake aligner.... Thank you! That also explain why i cant take my master apart... its a 19mm ... I will see how it works, and change it to a new one if neccerery... :) I was aware of the rear brake cylinders being diffrent, and I got the right 19mm one.. My Skoda is a 1986 model... Thanks for your comments, they really help me a lot! :D
@bencem.1862
@bencem.1862 3 года назад
@@SeasideGarage Nah, my guess is that the aligner got bent when the stuck shoes were forced out of their places by the drum during moving, they were already free of the drum when you pulled it off. You can probably straighten it carefully with a vise or something, then it should be fine... they are very hard to find, even used ones :/ Ideally, it's not a problem if you don't release the aligner before, because there's the pre-set small clearance that the aligner provides, but, if there's rust, dirt between, or the drum is not perfectly cylindrical, etc.. it's better to have them as far away from the drum as possible :)

It's certainly coming along nicely, and definitely need to sort out the fuel filler neck, that could get a bit messy like that, and definitely get a spare tyre for the front end, and maybe a couple sacks of gravel for ballast too... :D
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Yea... The filler neck must have been in one piece when I filled fuel into it with my gasoline can... it was not smelling back then and there was no leak... Now the rubber pipe is completely gone! the fuel just ate it!
@twocvbloke
@twocvbloke 3 года назад
Not surprising really, modern petrol tends to be laced with 5-10% ethanol depending on suppliers, which eats old rubber parts (which is problematic for older cars), especially if said parts are already perishing from age, just sucks that they intentionally add it to petrol, it's as though they're doing it to wreck classics... :(
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
@@twocvbloke That is a problem. But I only buy e5 high octane fuel to avoid this problem.... e10 is pretty hard on classics in my opinion... I think that the skoda rubber neck was dry rotted and just perished when moisture was added... A new one is on its way ! :)

Don’t totally agree on seized rear brakes all the time. Never had that myself and I have 6 rear wheel drive Škoda’s and some also aren’t used for months. But on the other hand when mounting ‘new’ parts on a rusty surface they’ll get stuck in a matter of time. I always use some ceramic break grease behind the moving parts of the braking system and then you have no problems whatsoever. Did you say when the brake system fails the clutch automatically fails too? It doesn’t. Even separate system for front and rear. But not sure I heard is right. Great you found a new hubcap. Love those original stickers with part numbers too! 😃 oh and there’s no need to lower the cooling pipes for removing and reassemble new brake lines. It will fit, just enough space. 😉
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 3 года назад
Maybe its due to the very moist weather in denmark? But its not a experience that I have, I was just told that it was common on Skodas... The backing plate was cleaned and greased! You are right, it will give problems without... :) Ah.. After looking at the braking system again I can see that the systems are separate... clever! And simple safety solution! Hmm.. I will try to do it without removing them.... but it looks tight!

@@SeasideGarage Feel free to use any method that works for you of course, but just wanted to let you know it’s possible to do without removing them 😃 The Škoda gets lots of nice reactions on RU-vid. Make a note of that part number - you never know when you may have to Google it ! Hopefully the fuel leak will just be the rubber on the filler neck pipe. My uncle has a 120 LS and I remember him saying that in winter snows it was handy to put a sack of ballast in the boot if he wanted to drive and steer and he actually had a spare wheel so I suspect you will need something in there !!

I'm fairly sure that's exactly the story behind the name "castle nut"! It's "slottsmutter" in Swedish. In German it's called "Kronenmutter" (crown nut), which does make sense but I think castle is a better comparison.
