I got a new vintage automotive machine! And its brilliant in its simple way to do something quite advanced!
Wheel balancing.
I try to figure out how to use this awesome piece of kit!

I think I did a pretty bad job at explaining or showing what I found out in this video. I will make short video soon about it... a bit more to the case... But what I figure this machine does is this: Firstly you do the static balance.. here the machine is just a regular bubble balancer. Then you pull the handle at set the machine to Dynamic. When this is done the wheel can move from side to side but should not do that since its static balanced. The disc under the wheel is free to move also (with quite a bit of resistance) When I spin the tire and push the handle with the bearings again this plate the plate will be completely horizontal and parallel with the floor and the static balanced wheel but when the wheel is spinning the wheel will no longer be parallel with the floor IF its out of balance.. When the wheel is stopped the disc is now a copy of the spinning wheel and the wheel is back to being parallel with the floor. I can then measure the plate to find out where the wheel is heavy. Hope it makes a little more sense...

This actually made it make sense to me, i didn't realise the disc could move with resistance relative to the wheel, it's simple and genius at the same time, what a machine :D

Really good explanation! Now even I understand. It is therefore the inclination of the disc in relation to the statically balanced wheel that is measured.

This machine is breaking my brain! The tire is set to wobble and you spin it. You then stabilise it as it spins, so it finds it's axis. You then stop the tire and connect the wobble meter, but by doing that, you wobble the tire, so any level it found whilst spinning is completely gone and it just tilts whatever way you tilted it. And then it shows consistent results, but how?! Old machinery is deceptively simple and usually makes no sense in how it operates, but it does. I'm amazed and confused in equal measures.
@kaneto88
@kaneto88 Месяц назад
The part you are missing is that after he pulls the rollers away from the disc it doesn't matter if the tire is moved by hand , bumpt, etc. because the disc is not pushed by anything.
@atvheads
@atvheads Месяц назад
@@kaneto88 That has to be the answer, because i did not get it first either. And i still don't get the mechanics. Like a Saab 99, not really hundred. :)

The wheel is free to wobble. What the stabilizing mechanism does is that it forces plane of the spinner, for a lack of a better word, to be parallel to the floor. The spinner can pivot relative to the wheel plane. As soon as the stabilising mechanism is detached, the spinner and wheel will pivot as a rigid body, which is why it is okay to move the wheel by hand. By measuring how much the spinner is out-of-horizontal, you can determine where the wheel is heaviest. I would assume that the wheel is heaviest where the lowest point on the spinner is. Hope this makes sense!

I don't need an older balancer but I want one since seeing your other one. I have a hand spin electronic Balco/Snap-On machine. I don't have the nut-centric attachments so if I found an old machine with nut-centric abilities I'd buy it.

I watched...... I don't see the point in spinning the wheel...stabilizing it in a level position until it stops and then taking a reading....It appears that the spinning is not needed as you wait for it to stop. and you have levelled out any "wobble" before it stops with the Stabilizer part??? I must be missing some thing?
@BillyWatersIE

yes but we are all finding out together
@jochenstacker7448
@jochenstacker7448 Месяц назад
And he introduces new wobbe by moving the wheel about by hand, so any level the wheel found whilst spinning is gone anyway, the operation of that machine makes no sense and I can't see how this ever could have worked.
@MrToxicSkittle
@MrToxicSkittle Месяц назад
@paukwootton5378 he’s not stabilising the wheel in a horizontal position, but only the disc blow it. The disc that he reads of off pivots relative to the wheel, during the stabilisation. When he removes the stabiliser, the disc and wheel will pivot as a rigid body. Hope this makes sense

I don't think that you are measuring dynamic balance at all. After spinning the wheel and stopping it you are just measuring static balance again, but using the micrometer rather than the bubble as the measuring instrument. You can only measure dynamic balance while the wheel is actually spinning. The only way I can see this working is that you spin the wheel slowly, maybe 2 revolutions per second, stabilise it with the jockey wheels, then simultaneously watch the micrometer and mark on the tyre while the wheel is still spinning to see where the mark is when the micrometer is at maximum (or minimum) deflection. Dynamic balance can only be tested when static balance is correct. Adding a nut to the top of the rim has upset the static balance, so the dynamic balance is invalid. To test the dynamic balancing ability, add a weight to the inside of the rim and an equal wight to the outside, on the opposite side of the wheel, this will compensate the static balance, but ruin the dynamic balance.
@juslitor
@juslitor Месяц назад
the disc under the wheel is floating (with reluctance) in relation to the balance wheel axle. While the wheel is rotating and the handle is pulled, the disc becomes displaced from the axle in relation to the rotating wheel. At the end, the micrometer measures how much offset the rotating wheel is from the balancing axle, via the disc that has remained stuck to the orientation it had while the wheel was spinning. The static balancing is done with the bubble level ontop.

I didn't really get the concept of the plate that you are stabilizing. So I had to rewatch the video. It makes sense now, I think you're probably onto something with the approach you're using now! I'm just amazed that the gauge does not have a small wheel or ball like a ball pen at the end - surely it cannot be correct that a precision instrument should drag on a steel flange like that? Maybe it is, I'm just a bit puzzled. Great video!
@SeasideGarage

The gauge has a small tip that unscrews... its sort of hollow and I was wondering if that should be filled with grease maybe?

got bored at 3:00 I'll just figure all the mackine does is spin the tire and balancing is completely up to the human :-\...... dont see how, considering the new ones have sensors to measure the force on the rim when its spinning.... this looks more like a tester to see if the wheel is straight or warped...... oh ps dont say how it works then go on for a hour about the story how you got it or something..... it puts ppl off... waiting to see what it as actually does..
