I had a 1962 Fairlane like that one with the 221 engine in it. Mine was a 4door with 3 on the column. It was a great little car.It was gave to me by my dad and he helped me fix anything that it needed. They only made just around a thousand of those engines. My StepDad could fix any problem with any car until they started with computers. We rebuild several trucks. A 1950 Dodge and Ford and he never let anyone under the hood of his cars and got upset if we didn't ask him first when it came to our cars Those were some good times. He passed away afew years ago. But I had that old 62 until 2014. All I have left now is a 1971 V W Bug.I do all my own work on it. I've had it for 32 years now. I love what you guys do. Mary Hayes from North Carolina

There’s something about a rebuild that nothing else can compare to. After getting it all back together and seeing and hearing that engine come alive- what a rush!!!! Satisfaction, for sure. Love these old cars. Good vid. Thanx!👍🇺🇸❤️

Superb episode! I really love and respect the way you work on these rigs. I mean, if you're gonna buy the car, go through the trouble of bringing it back the right way - and you endeavor to do this in every rescue. Whether you keep it or flip it, it went through your hands, and you want it leaving your care better than the way you found it. Those heads looked fantastic when done. Just a satisfying episode. You are aware what happens to hydraulic lifters when sitting for a long time will do and what will happen to compression? Next time pull the distributor and prime the oil pump which will lubricate the entire engine before starting a dry motor causing wear or even breaking things internally. Doing that the engine will possibly start right up as normal

While you really shouldn't lap in valves with a drill it is much easier to chuck up a piece of hose that fits the valve stem and then just push that onto each valve when doing what you did.

My first city to bigger city road trip was in that car as well. I swore I saw the starter rock when I watched, which would make a racket like that, but will look again and look forward to what is revealed. See a lot of Ford's in your intro. Right up my alley.

@JuryRigged77

An oil pressure check with a gauge would tell you if you have bottem end problems. The non syncronized knocking sound makes me think its probably not a rod and definitely not the mains... Id look at the flex plate as previously stated in the comments and maybe change the starter.. Also...with that much noise if it was the rod bearings that oil would have looked like a glitter bomb!...Change the starter first if it contines see if you can get your bore scope between the flex plate and torque converter and look for cracks.. if not just loosen it and scoot it back some... Good luck
@186scott

That is the same thought I had and I think it maybe the starter to flywheel as the ring gear/flywheel looked badly warped and was smacking the starter gear
@JuryRigged77
@JuryRigged77 Год назад
@@186scott it definitely was moving...But I didnt see any chewed up spot on the flywheel when he was turning it over... Definitely not a common sound
@186scott
@186scott Год назад
@@JuryRigged77 I just went and re-watched it where the camera on the starter at a slower speed and it is hard to tell but I think it is just making contact with the starter to make the sound but can't see the tip of the starter to see if there is any damage in the starter teeth and also realised 2 things 1 when the engine was turned over by hand if it was a hanging rod it would have been felt and heard and it wasn't and 2 a comment was made "looks like the trans was rebuilt" could it be the trans is dry/the torque converter has failed/not installed properly

An old school flat plate = a polished granite countertop. If you can find a decently sized broken piece, grab it. Countertop installers are a good source, they'll often give you a busted piece for free. Sometimes, they've got samples in a showroom that they eventually throw out... stop off and ask for freebies. You might score! Best wishes! - Max Giganteum

Another great video. These were the cars I grew up with! I'm older than your dad. The 221 was a very high winding engine, larger bore short stroke. It was an easy 6k, 6500 rpm engine (according to the Western Auto tach). One of my teenage buddies had the same car (gray with beige interior) with 3 on the column. 60mph in first gear all day long...lol. It a was shocker for some of the Chevy II drivers, they couldn't believe they were looking at our tail lights!
@sombra6153
@sombra6153 Год назад
The 221 didn’t seem to get a lot of attention, at least from what I recall from old magazines of the period I was reading in the 80s. I don’t recall ever seeing anything about it being modified. Then again, when Carroll Shelby acquired a couple of the “new” thin-wall Ford V 8s and had them shipped to AC cars in England to test in prototypes that became the Cobra, were they 221s or 260s? Everything I’ve read seems to gloss over and, of course the chassis and bodies were then shipped to LA where 260s were installed and the legend was thus “born.” If exterior dimensions are the same, shouldn’t be any problems with 260/289 manifolds and other parts fitting a 221. Then again, I don’t know much about them because by the time I was getting into cars in the mid-late 70s, they weren’t even mentioned.
@samphillips8322
@samphillips8322 2 месяца назад
May be the first time I ever saw a 221 opened up. That was close to the displacement of the flat head as well wasn't it? Once you get the kinks out HEI would be a nice upgrade along with an alternator. Interested in seeing what oil you use. Friend of mine has a 1970 Comet for a daily driver - all original and in his family since new. Some of the FoMoCo products from that era have aged gracefully.

This is a really great episode, and I almost feel like that car was just sitting there, waiting for you. Other than the engine being stubborn towards the end, it was really fun seeing how many things went so smoothly, and how many things on it worked pretty much right away. I am jealous that you keep finding all of these oldschool Detroit gems that just need some sweat equity and a little TLC, and they are running and driving. The bird's eye view of the carburetor rebuild portion was something I haven't seen on your channel so far, and I think that was a cool new point of view. Say what you want, but I think in a lot of places, if you pulled up in a tastefully modified and restored 1960's car, you would get more attention and more street cred than if you did with some modern exotic supercar. Hope to see this car run and drive soon!

Anyway it sounds to me that the flex-plate for the tranny is hitting something, you might want to check that out before you go pulling the bottom end. Love the 62-4 Fairlanes! The true start of the muscle era, the beginning of the 289 Hi-Po K Codes, the end of the space-race wing'd era, and the test bed of what the Mustang might be all while remaining under the radar of most big dollar collectors.. unfortunately for folks in the USA, Australians and Germans have been importing them as fast as they can find them marking some serious price jumps as of late.
