The large center block (Diamond Star) is ready and the ring of 16 inch blocks are ready. Now, we just need to join them together.
I've approached the math on this border idea many different ways but the way we're doing it is to start with the center block and work our way out to the border. First step is to put a solid white border around that center block. I've decided to make that a 5" border. I cut 5 1/2" strips from our white fabric (length of fabric) and sewed a border all the way around.
We're not putting fancy mitered borders on this quilt, it will have simple squared turns. In this video I also share with you some tips on trimming or squaring your blocks and how to avoid cutting your block too short. We also discuss pressing your seams and I try to clear up any miscommunication regarding pulling or tugging at your seams. (This is my method for correcting any minor issues with seams.)
I'll be cutting our second 5" border and we''ll meet next week to start constructing the center section with the blue and green fabrics. I think I've come up with an idea that will be eye catching and help us bridge the gap between the pieces.
