I believe Dark Shadows is the only soap opera where the tapes of each episode were saved and not taped over. I read somewhere that was Dan Curtis's decision. Thank god.
Jonathan Frid was just incredible in that role. It's impossible to imagine any other actor who could bring such vulnerability and pathos to a character that was essentially meant to be a cold, sinister fiend.
IMO this was the best scene of the entire show. It’s showed every emotion of Barnabas . Frid was beyond good here, he was the greatest actor I have ever seen.
Barnabas is upset that Sarah appears to everyone but him. Sarah was the only one who loved him unconditionally as he did her. I purchased the entire series a few years back. I've watched it 3 times already. Dark Shadows is a piece of my childhood history that I don't want to let go of.
Such a great scene! Few people could stop Barnabas, but Sarah could. I like to imagine that Barnabas was eventually released from the curse, and he was reunited with Sarah before she went into the Light.
I remember running home after school just in time at 3:30 in the afternoon to watch dark shadows. it was kind of corny but it was super good. love that show.
Barnabas had plenty of opposition and enemies and people to challenge him: Angelique, Julia, Quentin, Joshua, various Trasks, Laura and others. But no one ever OWNED HIM quite like Sarah did for those 60 seconds.
@@patriciahayes7315Sarah’s most prized toys were the little wood dolls that Ben Stokes had carved for her. Barnabas was aware of the kindness of Ben toward Sarah. Ben Stokes served Barnabas out of loyalty & not fear.
Everyone had a unique relationship with Barnabas but none could hold a candle to Julia. It was always so intriguing to me how in later years he came to be very fond of her, respect her and rely on her as if she were his own right arm-priceless.
It was a great show when I was a little kid might one of my favorite afternoon shows after school and Barnabas and Dr Hoffman made a great team together they started out as enemies and became best of friends throughout the series The Shadows what a great show the one and only kind
I still remember watching this when it was still a series on television as a kid.50 Years later, here I am watching bits and pieces on RU-vid. What memories.
@Brother "A" If you have access to the websites, Tubi TV and/or Plex TV and the IMDB , they have the Dark Shadows reruns listed in two separate listings. Pre Barnabas reruns are listed as "Dark Shadows The Beginning" and the Barnabas episodes are just titled " Dark Shadows" on both Tubi TV and Plex TV which are free video services and on IMDB only has the Barnabas episodes. Pluto TV and The Decades Channel only have three of the five years of the show in reruns.
One of the heaviest scenes in the entire show. imagine being confronted by a family member you really cared about in such a way. and seeing that disappointment in their face.
I truly believe Barnabas was a good person. He was tormented by a curse which at times he couldn’t control himself. He had to safeguard his existence which he later regretted many times.
I remember being sympathetic for Barnabas , didn’t remember how cruel he was toward Julia though. Imagine telling someone who cares for you that they mean very little to you. WOW
Yeah, pretty heavy DS's episode ... Barnabas had a lot to learn (and whom to trust). Thank goodness his little sister Sarah rattled his senses to "stop hurting" people or else: in which Barnabas slowly but surely (a lllloonng learning journey) overtime would put his own life to save his family the COLLINSES & his dearest closes friend(s) & partner Dr. Julia Hoffman.
So sad. We find out later why He feels such guilt. That Sarah died because she caught cold after being out in a storm looking for him! But she knew what he had become.....such a great tragedy. The writing on this show.....campy as it is.....was genius.
Fyi pluto.tv has a dark shadows channel 24/7 - only problem, of course, is that a person needs to spend at least part of the day on unimportant stuff, such as sleeping 😉
@@ivoe1574 yes but you could really tell it on the show that was too close to be Typecast lots of people speculated that that was her mother I think Dan Curtis new it too the house Angelique Magda mrs. This is why I prefer Barnabas over Dracula and pity him way more. Yes media's adaptions of Dracula have made him sympathetic with the torture and the lost wife but he lost all my sympathies when he fed a baby to his vampire brides. Barnabas however for all his faults, never harmed a child and cared deeply for children. Also unlike media's Dracula, Barnabas had no choice in becoming a vampire.
I always felt like Barnabas would have his pockets filled with candy for the children and not for some creepy reason but because the kids liked candy and he loved the kids
You're adding ridiculousness to his character, even with Amy and David he was polite but always reserved, patting them on the shoulder it was Amy who embraced HIM. When his little sister Sara ran out into the storm because she was afraid of him he never ran after her, he just stood there calling her name. @@krisrhood2127
I love how you can hear the crew all throughout this... especially the cough at 3:35. The actors soldier on despite the distracting background noises. On set I’m constantly telling crew to be quiet. This is why.
I absolutely loved that about the show. I once was watching an episode and one cameraman shot in through the front door, and back in the drawing room was the other cameraman, huge camera and all. 😅
Of course, Julia was lying when she told Barnabas that she was not jealous of Vicky. However, one of the most chilling comments uttered by Barnabas in the entire series was when he told Julia how very little she meant to him. One could see the utter dismay on Julia's face, but as we know, she would later on become the most meaningful person in Barnabas' life.
Man, I love this show. It was always such a diverse mix of things. Here Frid is excellent, just really on the money while Hall huffs, puffs, and over acts on a grand scale. The writing here is very good and the days director is good as well. Frid, Bennett, and Clarice Blackburn were the best. The subtle, realistic performances of those 3 grounded D.S. and gave an air of believably to the happenings in Collinwood. Selby, Briscoe, and Jackson also brought talent and honest, thoughtful acting to the show.
Yes we are very blessed lucky and fortunate to be able to watch movies and television and listen to music on our phones practically free of charge so we should remember to always appreciate that from Mark Tretter
In my binge watching of 'Dark Shadows', I haven't reached this part yet where Barnabas has his Sara sighting. I'm on the part where Victoria has her own Sara sighting, along with a Maggie Evans sighting. This appears to be one of the best parts of the show, along with Barnabas being freed from his coffin and Barnabas killing Jason Maguire.
"To whom did you speak?" smuggly, said Barnabas. "Sarah" ..'Julia triumphly responds back to Barnabas: knowing that's his human "soft spot" how he loved his little sister so. Brilliant chill biting dialogue: SARAH our DS's Sharon Smyth was a adorable little girl: we were/still are thrilled spellbond by her innocent strength in setting Barnabas Collins her big brother on concious path (also, Dr. Hoffman, Willie Loomis & Victoria Winters: had awaken "overtime a caring concious" in Barnabas: Wow, what a battle but they strongly got through). Awesome!!
Best actor ever was no better actor he fits the part and good looking sexy all rolled in to 1 the best always these others who try to play a part as a vampire makes me crackup laughing its sick
Barnabas and Sarah had a beautiful mother. You can see the beautiful human in brother and sister. Yes. At even at times when Barnabas was a vampire. He did loath what he was.
Poor Julia, It took Barnabas so long to realize she was important to him, and even so he never admitted that he loved her. But she stayed with him. I see that as a sad but beautiful relationship.
I used to have VHS tapes when I was a kid handed out by my father who was also a fan and there was big gaps in between and it took me years to see this great scene.
James hall would have been much better because he looked the part, he was younger and much cuter, a real blonde punk, I know you're all used to our Willie but he was such a Ham, he over did his scenes. I recall punks from that era and they looked like James Hall. Obviously some idiotic din't like Hall or the original actor that played Burke, too Alpha in their opinion.
Had the character of Willie not been mellowed down, James Hall would likely have been kept. But after coming under the spell of Barnabas, Willie became tentative and timid, and James was simply too rough and rugged looking to fill that role.
@@marilynwillett804 Have to disagree (espcially about James Hall being cuter than John Karlen...not in my book!). I don't think Hall would have brought 1/10th of the complexity that Karlen did as Willie the vampire slave. Not saying John couldn't be hammy on occasion (especially when he had the dream), but he made Willie so much more likable and sympathetic, I just don't think James Hall would have been able to pull off. Hall was fired because there were problems with him on the set, so if you want to blame anyone for him not being allowed to continue in the role as Willie blame him. The show must go on, as they say. I'll be forever grateful that Dan Curtis hired a far more competent actor in Karlen. Just because an actor 'looks the part' doesn't necessarily mean they're the right guy for the role. Hall has proven that.
I don't understand, why the characters after seance forget about Sarah, and she'll never appeared to them in the next episodes, and David was friend of Amy Jennings?! I hoped that Sarah meets Barnabas Collins in 1198-1199 episodes and forgive him...
I know right don’t get me wrong I love Amy too but Sarah was such an important character in Barnabas’s character ark and she could’ve become kinda like the ghost of Josette, helping when she could without being over powered
Maybe in the later episodes Sarah wasn't shown anymore, because she was growing bigger and taller? And Sarah died as a child, so even many years later the writers want her to STAY as a child.
I think there were two issues and reasons why Sarah got dropped post-seance. 1. Ghosts can't age but little girls who play them do. You couldn't have utilized the same actress so much longer. 2. Probably more importantly, after the 1795 storyline, I'm not sure a nice little girl ghost was off the hook enough for them anymore. 1795 brought us a witch, a zombie, a fanatical preacher, a nefarious Naval officer in revealing tight pants and more. The audience loved 1795 and just going back to a vampire and his little sister ghost wasn't going to have enough wow factor after the wild ride in 1795. So that's why instead of Sarah, we got Dr. Lang, Adam, Cassandra, Nicolas Blair, Eve, Chris the werewolf, Quentin, etc.
It was actually much smaller than Collinwood, which is why Joshua had the latter built. But I think this was on purpose due to the fact that the family had pretty much abandoned and let it go for all those years.
This era of contention between Barnabas and Dr. Hoffman was a scary time. I was always frightened for her because she couldn’t control Barnabas. I also loved her styling and hair back then. I wasn’t fond of her short hair later which to me in some way signaled her resilient spirit and occasionally brash tone.
The main question is what makes Julia think the police would believe Barnabas is a Vampire.....she may have her notes about him but people in the 20th century didn't believe in Ghosts , Vampires and other supernatural beings. by the 1960's the majority only thought stuff was for campfire tales
@@nassauguy48 that is true but you also have Angelique who loved Barnabas even if he didn't love her and anytime someone tried to kill him..she saved him.
Becoming a vampire changed Barnabas...Sarah told him the truth now he knows that she is very angry with him..Dr Hoffman should leave the old house because Barnabas is upset..Angelics curse.
@@ivoe1574 A great person whom I have had the pleasure of meeting. She maintains a Facebook page under the name Sharon Smyth-Lentz, and is eager to answer any questions about the show.
I always liked the ghost Sarah. Naturally vampires kill for blood. I never liked the character of Dr. Hauffman, or that Professor Stokes. In the past era storyline, Reverend Trask was an evil creep.
You should have had a giant Cross you mean very little to me will you do to you old antique she would have pulled out that cross he would have took off like somebody got after his ass😳 and put it straight in his face he would have sh..brix😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@marilynwillett804 Sometimes we can look for love everywhere else and it can be right in under our nose and we don't even realize it. Which is why everywhere else he looked never worked out.
@@marilynwillett804 I think it was implied that Julia was still tending to her patients at Windcliff. Remember, Barnabas was only up at night, so that freed Julia to work during the day. And, being a high ranking doctor, she did not have to go in more than, say, two days a week. What I wonder is whether she was still paying the rent or the mortgage on where she was living before she moved into Collinwood. Also, in addition to being in love with Barnabas, she wanted the glory and prestige of being able to cure vampirism.
It just hit me that as a ghost Sarah could still speak.....all of the other ghosts....Quentin, Gerard, and Daphne....couldnt speak....wait ....could Josette?
At 3:35, there's an audible cough from one the crew. What is it with this show that refused to ever do a reshoot, regardless of whether they forget their lines, call characters by the wrong names, obviously look up to read the cue cards as Johnathan Frid did even as he was choking Hoffman, have a boom mic enter the frame, or have a beer bottle roll into the frame in the middle of a scene?? Ok, I made that last part up, the but the rest are almost as bad.....
Check the decades channel at 11-4, tomorrow at 9 P.M., PCT; they've been showing "Dark Shadows" episodes once a day, 5 days a week. No, this isn't a cable channel. They are showing them in 1966, and Maggie was recently kidnapped. At 8:P.M., they also showed two "Honeymooners " episodes I never saw before...
Barnbabas being a Vampire was the main reason Julia didn't want him involved in any type relationship be it Vicki or Maggie she didn't want to see them become like him...............the first time I saw this show in Reruns I thought Julia was a spoil sport..thinking Barnabas has a right to be happy and have a women in his life......yes he was a Vampire but he shouldn't be lonely LOL
