Great pick ups! You inspired my to grab Husbands in my Criterion sale haul. I picked up that along with a few others in store and online (really excited to add Mean Streets in 4K and the new Jackie Chan set). Debating on a few others before the end of the sale. Hope all is well!
War and Peace is the ultimate Sergei Bondarchuk film. Waterloo was a turning point for epic films in the 1970s, but Bondarchuk's adaptation from the source novel by Tolstoy hits the mark with some of the most bodacious and remarkable battle staging since Waterloo. There's remarkable imagery and very intuitive direction, which shows up Ridley Scott's Neopolian for what it will be, a CGI simulated dumpster fire, even though the film will take multi-millions. Hark back to the good ole days when cinema delivered remarkable battles and a sense of scale on a cinematic paltte that makes me yarn for those days again....
Hi Dave and I really enjoyed the video. Always enjoy seeing you guys out and about. I haven't been to B&N in quite some time so it was nice to feel like I was shopping. Did I spy Columbo?!?! 😂😂😂 I grabbed Husbands during the last sale but I need to watch it. You talking about it just moved it up in the watch pile. I have Pink Flamingos as well but I'm pretty sure I need to prepare for that one. Lynch/Oz was a fantastic documentary so thanks for the nudge to give that one a watch. The Bergman set arrives today so I'm excited to take a look at that and I'm planning a winter film festival with it. Thanks for another great video. Always enjoy hearing your thoughts and seeing what you're watching. Chat soon. 🥶🥶🚶🏼♂️🚶🏼♂️😀 PS I'm looking for the Christmas tree!!
Thanks so much! We had fun! Nice to get out of the house once in awhile 😀 Not many new releases or box sets at our local B&N so will probably order online before the month is over. Glad you saw the Columbo clue in the video. I definitely need to watch that show one of these days. 🤣 Talk to you soon. 😀🥶🥸❄️
Online I picked up the blu-rays of the Tod Browning set, The Others, Don't Look Now and The Trial; also Moonage Daydreams & Adventures of Baron Munchausen on 4K. At my local B&N the selection is rapidly dwindling, but I did manage to find a couple of Mizoguchi digipack titles I'd been meaning to get (Ugetsu & Sansho the Bailiff).
I have Sergei Bondarchuk’s War and Peace waiting on my shelf as well. I saw it years ago and it really made an impression. It’s an insanely long film, but the amazing battle scenes alone make it worth seeing. Some of the most visually stunning films of all time came from Russia (especially I Am Cuba and The Cranes Are Flying by Mikhail Kalatozov).
My nearest B&N hardly has any discs. So it was a small, online, new-release order of: The Last Picture Show 4k and Mean Streets 4k. Still considerin' Freaks; Husbands sounds like a possibility, as well.
Hi Dave and thanks for another great video. Some of your back-catalog pickups are quite interesting and I'll have to read up a bit on those before I do my store trip next week. Unfortunately, my store, like yours, has really cut back their Criterion selection over the past year, as I suppose is the case with most B&N stores. The only consolation is that books have made a huge resurgence since the pandemic a few years ago, and that's a pretty good thing.
Thanks! You are so right about the resurgence of books and it was a good thing to see so many on our trip to Barnes and Noble. Hope you enjoy the sale.
Nice haul Dave. Im in Vancouver and we don’t have Barnes and Noble up here. 😢. I did pickup ‘Thelma and Louise’, ‘La Bamba’, and ‘The Trial’ during the flash sale.
loved hearing your picks! youve inspired me to watch some John Waters tonight. I am planning on going by a B&N when i go back to my hometown for thanksgiving, and hopefully theyll have After Hours by Scorsese, Cure by Kurosawa, and perhaps The Trial as a blind pick for myself. If i'm feeling like my bank account can take it, maybe more.... :)
Hi. Forget which video of yours that I watched in which you mentioned all of the various label's that you like to collect and you mentioned Vinegar Syndrome. I've been deep dive watching many of your video's but do not recall much VS content. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on some VS content. Thanks
Lots on my want list. We saw John Waters at a spoken word show a few weeks ago. He's always fun. I may have mentioned it before, but in case not, John reads his own audiobooks.
My Criterion choice is "Rebecca". They did not have it at my local Barnes and Noble. So it ordered the movie on their website. Should be in the mail, hopefully, any day now. Love the Criterion videos that you do !!
Fanny and Alexander is one of my top 3 films from Ingmar Bergman. I think I like the film so much because it really sums up (and I'm simplifying here) Bergman's vision and career. It completely makes sense that it is the last film in the curated Bergman box set. I really could go on and on about Bergman but he is one of my all time favorite filmmakers. I can honestly say that the Bergman box set is one of the best sets that Criterion has ever released and remains my all time favorite. I'm happy to answer any other specific questions about Bergman or the film too. 😀
What part of the country are you in? Its great to see snow already. I've been putting off Barry Lyndon & The Killing forever because I figured Kubrick films will probably never go out of print. I finally picked them up since Best Buy had Clockwork Orange 4k on an early Black Friday sale for only $5.99
Yes, it's fun to see some early snow though not much lately. I live on the east coast. Wow, you picked up some great films. I still need to get The Killing but have most of other Kubrick films.
Great pick ups ! I ordered 7 x Criterion titles and my wallet is empty now!! The trial, Freaks, After Hours, Mean Streets, La Llorona, Moonage Daydream and La Ceremonie!!
I don't know for sure if I'll buy in this sale since I got a little more than usual in July. But i would like to upgrade my Night of the Living Dead DVD for the blu ray. I would also like to add some new titles, like maybe Klute, which i streamed on Max over the summer for the first time. That was a great movie. There's also a brand new Jackie Chan set that looks pretty good. Six movies and the half off price is something like $62. I could easily spend a decent amount of money here 😅
As much as I enjoyed Pink Flamingos, I wish that someone had warned me about the disgusting, inexcusable animal abuse contained therein. This imagery haunts me, and as much as I enjoy Waters, the man, I haven’t been able to look at him quite the same since.
@@ModernPlague They absolutely brutalize a living chicken. It really made me angry, and I put my hand in front of the screen. Just to note: John Waters remains completely unapologetic, to this very day.
@@celluloidtherapy5003 Quickly killing a chicken is one thing, but needlessly tormenting it is unacceptable. Thank you for the info -- now I have even less desire to see the film than what little I had already!
Hey Dave. Let’s FWD to Dec 15th 2023 - criterion unveils it’s next releases, what’s included? For me - ‘The Third Man’ 4K, ‘Boys in the Hood’, ‘The Rock’ 4K, and a ‘Raising Arizona’ digipak…. Any thoughts?
I’m not very good at predicting the next releases from Criterion but I’d love to see more Sidney Lumet films in the collection as well as David Lynch’s The Straight Story. Those are the first films that come to mind for me.
