Aches and pains in your 30's? You poor thing 😄❤ I'm 67 and still crawling under and over my cars! You are completely correct about the exercise value. All the muscles that get used and stretched from working on a car really do help overall strength. Awsome car. Cheers
I’m only 5 foot 6inches and I nearly tore my hamstrings off the bone trying to get that back valve cover screw. From now on I’ll let my mechanic doing it lol 😂
My FPV Typhoon F6 number123 , had oil in the first two plug galleys . It was from the VCT Actuators leaking slightly. I have now fitted a delete kit and vernier cam gears from Atomic Performance. Engine response is much improved. My car is one of only two here in UK. I found a 6 inch extension with universal joint gets rear plug fine. Keep up with the Barra thing. I love mine.
In the UK? That's cool! Thanks for the info. From memory I didn't see any oil trails from the VCT solenoids so I think mine were from the spark plug seals.
@@MotoringBoxTV Yes. I'm a very lucky man to be campaigning a BA Barra over here. I purchased it from a guy who imported two of them with the intention of supplying tuning parts etc for them via Dreamscience but he was told not to import anymore as they don't meet UK SPEC. So a rare beast here. Your vids are excellent and helpful. Mine does feature on a you tube clip. If you type Dreamscience Typhoon. That's mine.
Get some wobble joint extensions for your socket set ( I'm not talking about flex extensions or the one's that look like universal or CV joints). They look like normal extensions but have a tapered end, when you install a socket all the way they're a standard extension but if you pull the socket out a bit it can wobble around. Perfect for doing those spark plugs.
Another common issue with the BA-BF Sean that causes a poor idle or surge in idle on the 4.0 is actually the throttle body which is another issue on the BA-BF. And normally with a clean with some throttle body cleaner and a brush and cleaning the butterfly. Will sort out a poor idle
@@xlr8g2 use the Nulon brand based cleaner i find it's the best one and its safe to use on fly by wire throttle bodys the only thing with the fly by wire throttle bodys is you need to have the key in the run/on position and a block of wood on the throttle body to open the butterfly use a tooth brush and clean both sides of the butterfly as well as sides of the butterfly. And also give the throttle body a scrub and spray to. Once you put everything back together and start the car you may find it has trouble starting or stalls or runs on a few cylinders. This may last up to 30 seconds while the solvent burns away then car will run normal.
When it's cold, try flooding the intake with carby cleaner, it will take a little bit to start but it will blow allot of gunk out.. give a few revs, repeat the process until the exhaust passes clear. That will improve your idle.
Perfect timing! My replacement coil packs arrived today for my BA Fairmont. There's an awful engine hesitation when you hit the accelerator. It clears itself once it gets to speed. Non existent when you drive with normal power. Cleaned throttle body and MAP sensor and changed spark plugs. Only have intake manifold gasket or coils to try now... Cheers for this great video.
The main issues I had with my XR6T were front brake calipers always warping. When I bought my MKI back in 2005 it was only 18 months old and still under warranty. Every service the dealer would re-grind the rotors but refused to upgrade to vented discs. I only owned it for 2 ½ years and I never experienced any other problems with it. Great video as always Sean. Thank you. :-)
Local ford dealer used to bring the falcon rotors into the engine reco shop i worked in to get machined on our rotor machine that much they ended up buying their own machine.
Not sure if anyone said but oil in the spark plug holes is the valve cover gasket and the individual o ring gaskets for the spark plugs holes. they would be old and probably cracked, i have the exact same car mate but in colour blaze, yours is very clean would love a honest review on the gearbox 👍 great content
Just fixed a rough idle and a misfire in my EL Falcon. After asking around everywhere about injector replacement/cleaning and cleaning plugs and checking plug leads It ended up being a crack in the inlet manifold Gasket. A Quick test to check for air leaks is to spray some Parts cleaner along the manifold gasket, if it makes the engine idle worse you have an Air leak.
Removed my plugs on Ba Barra awhile ago.Two Tips Label wires before removing.and spray some wd 40 or a like and let it soak for an hour if you don,t know how long the plugs have been in.The longer the plugs are in the more carbon build up.If when removing plugs you notice it gets a bit tight stop and go the other way.... repeat tighten loosen motion and use wd 40. Cheaper than rushing it and stripping a spark plug thread
Had the exact same issue with my BA II XR6 Turbo back in the day. Changed the plugs and coils and whilst it improved it, I still felt it wasn’t right. Ended up taking it to a performance mechanic and got a tune done and it fixed it 100%, car felt heaps better (a little bit of extra boost helped too)
I had same issue basically happen on my 2007 BF2 Fairmont Ghia for the last 2mths . On mine while driving the speedo needle would drop to zero, the ABS, Stability control an Brake system fault (!) Would light up. Pull over turn off engine restart all good for a while . Could be an hour could be a few days before it did it again. Anyway today got the same repair done above you did . New spark plugs an coils. ( got all genuine Ford parts Urideium Spark plugs). Car is DEFINITELY smoother when accelerating. Quiter when idling also. Did a good 50km test drive. A interesting fact to I have done 234,000km on the Original spark plugs. I was told they should have been changed at 100,000km. I was never told that . Car has run beautiful for the 14 years I have owned it. So I think that is awesomely impressive 234,000km on the original spark plugs. Maybe as I estimate 70% of its driving or 80% has been Freeway/ Highway speeds is why they lasted so long.
I just scored a mint 2003 Fairmont Ghia so will be watching your awesome channel intensely. I got a new socket set as well and don't know stuff all about motors but I'm looking forward to maintaining as much of it myself as I can. I love the car too. Beautiful to drive. I reckon the sound system sounds great too. I was abit concerned because of some comments Ive read on various forums.
The car definitely pulls rapidly and unfussed.Especially given its in the lower 50% throttle openings range. It's always satisfying working on your own vehicle. Its great when a big improvement is gained, through this work. 👍
I don't even know if it is 50%, but whatever level that is it's barely on boost at all. Pretty much brings it up 0 to 1psi and even that's enough to start pressing you into the seat a bit. Looking forward to the new clutch for sure.
I would really recommend doing cold air intake, injectors, fuel pump and a tune, i think you'll love the power gain and the turbo sounds from a cold air intake. thats the mods i started with and part of me wishes i stopped there, its got VERY expensive from there on. ive got a 2007 bf xr6 turbo in manual, such amazing cars. ive managed to push mine to 500hp on 98 pump fuel. love the videos keep it up.
@@no-new-friends7881 maybe if you put a smaller one on ...but otherwise there's gains from just fitting the f6 lower snorkel to a ba-bf turbo and going turbo side intake instead is even better for power and torque but especially for the sound it makes!!!!
In regards to oil under the coil plate, I've heard it generally happens from the VCT sensor gaskets failing. just thought I'd mention that in case you were still finding oil :)
Thanks for your detailed and informative DIY video! I've seen a few other videos where they'll just pull a couple of the front plugs and then just jump to the end when they're all out and then make an off-the-cuff comment like "gee that last one was a bastard to get out alright" however not give the viewer any insights as to how they actually achieved the task (ie, your trick using the 2x short extensions). Will be changing the plugs & coilpacks on my BA ute next week. Cheers!
That oil can get to that spot if someone spills a bit while filling the oil filler (common), and the gasket is not in perfect position. I am pretty sure that is the explanation. I can get the last spark plug out using a short extension and the bendable knuckle extension from a very similar Stanley tool kit. I am not a mechanic, but have owned a few falcons.
Thanks mate, just wanted to try it. I know it's too long but people who hate that can always skip ahead. The timestamps RU-vid added in are really helpful for that.
Funny you should say that...my Barra has been misfiring ever since I cleaned the engine bay a few weeks ago - normally dries out after about 50 km but hasn't this time... I replaced the coil packs some years back and whenever I do, I always use Iridium plugs because they're a bit of a pain in the ass to get to the very last plug!
I reckon it was that intake seal. That would've been telling the ECU that there is too much air going in and it was changing the way the engine behaved. Hope you don't need the ECU checked to make sure it is setup right.
3:28 mark: "Hey Guys.... Chris Fix here". Who the hell put a thumbs down! Great video as always! so with the oil attached to the coil packs, you'll have to remove the whole lot again and rocker cover? While you're there might as well turn up the boost to get to the 620hp😂. Looking forward to the next video.
watched your vid this morning, Sean and it (unintentionally) helped me with a little issue i had while checking over wifeys car (FG) today.. gave it a tub (because she doesnt 🙄 ) and a quick squirt under the bonnet (exactly as you advised not too 😂), also cleaned the throttle body (its thrown the odd ETC code of late). then, it wouldn't run worth a shit 🤔 ended up stripping the top off, pulling plugs 1-5 (CBF'd with 6 after seeing your vid 😂). found it chock full of platinums as spec'd from ford, with one hole only very slightly damp.. a clean up, quick squirt crc 2.26 on all of the connectors involved, and now it runs sweet as a nut, with the bit of a start up shudder gone as well! The first time since i owned a car with points and a dizzy that ive had dramas with giving the under bonnet a squirt 🤷♂️ Thanks for the content!
Whilst I have had a couple of coil packs fail over the years on my BA XR6, the problem I had the most difficulty diagnosing was a failed inlet manifold gasket creating a vacuum leak. Similar symptoms to a failed coil but harder to isolate.
just bought a ba fairmont a couple months ago and it’s idling a bit rough and bogs down going up hills and it’s been getting worse. going to start with the plugs and if they don’t work replace the coils. cheers for the tutorial👍
Hunting for a misfire ,if your in Sydney I have a snap on scan tool , it shows individual cylinder fire order and timing , also will tell you if you even needed to do them in the first place lol 🤣
Did this job on my brother in law's BF XR6 N/A, how you doubled up on the short extension bars is exactly how I dealt with cylinder 6 on his. Except I didn't have a proper spark plug socket, I lined the inside of a deep socket with electrical tape to get it to hold spark plugs in place, was a fun time haha.
Good content and information cheers mate 👍 I've owned a ba Fairmont and a xr6t 05 and similar problems though your info on yours has helped alot cheers again mate 👍 👏
In regards to the clutch squeak try greasing the point where the clutch slave cyclinder meets the clutch fork with high temp grease and also spray silicone lubricant or oil up the sping/moving components behind the clutch pedal itself. Has happened before on my Hilux. Also if you hear a loud clicking sound as you depress the clutch , its most likely you slave cyclinder. Cheers for the great video mate
I was just opening the same exact canned beverage & starting my lunch Sean as you were just about to start with the coil packs & spark plugs. I'd be interested in the clutch replacement to see how worn it is. Love the ChrisFixit headcam style of filming 😄
This was a great video man, found it funny when you said the GoPro was between your eyes and the car sounds great too. One day you should get a clean VT/VX N/A V6 for the channel, and see how the other side lived. I bought myself a VX just over a month ago and I’d be interested to see what you’d do to one and what you’d think of it.
MotoringBox oh yeah I’ve watched that one, it was great video. I was thinking a V6, I mean if you wanted to learn a bit more about the Buick V6 engines but you’ve already got the feel for how they drive so you won’t be gaining too much more experience/knowledge in the VT/VX department
My sisters BA turbo had idling issues and after replacing coil paks and plugs. I replaced the engine mounts and it idled perfectly. The engine mount near the turbo was totally stuffed from the heat. Her car had 200 thousand KMS at the time.
Hi, Have you got any videos on ECU PCM failures, as it seems my XR6 T has a problem inside PCM thats cutting power off No.2 and 4 fuel injectors after 5 seconds after startup and all the coils/spark plugs and fuel injectors have been checked and all good, have you got any PCM laying around. Thanks
@@MotoringBoxTV Thanks, did you have any Fault codes come up when it was misfiring/running rough? As I had 3 ignition coil faults and a Clutch switch malfunction fault, that happened all of a sudden and the same time, so I just replaced all ignition coils with new and those coil faults don’t come up now, so when startup, its runs smooth and after 5 seconds it runs rough and dropping power from fuel injectors 2 and 4, that are on the same firing order, as it did before new coils and spark plugs was replaced last time. So when you started it up after you replaced ignition coils/plugs did it still run rough at startup for a while, as I just started mine up for not even a minute and was pissed off that it still ran rough, so turned off, like does it take the ECU/PCM to relearn again maybe, if so how long/ Thanks
To make your turbo barra run well always use 98 or higher octane fuel works a treat and you will notice the difference at idle and on acceleration..john...Willaura😎
You've inspired me! I went out and bought a BA mk 2 XR8 ute, and in the same colour! Also stock as a rock like yours also. I'd still bet you'd have an easier time with your spark plugs than me 😂
Great video bro. I have to do this job on my FG soon. A little bit of silicone spray on your spark plug socket will help the spark plug release from the socket too. Obviously not dripping wet (spray in there and wipe it out ensuring the rubber grommet at the top of the socket is clean and dry), but we do that with the motorbike plugs, it is the same situation where they are an absolute sh*t to get to.
I have been having problem similar to this on non turbo territory misfires on cylinder 3 only when cold once warm it goes away, it throws DSC light on and when u cycle the key it seems fine , problem is not coils or plugs, no noticeable vacuum leak, compression is good now suspecting injector. Ordered new OEM ones once changed I will update if it fixed the fault
Haha I use the same 2 short extension technique for the back one, have found electrical tape around the joins works to keep things together, I also like to use some new 3/8 hose to stick the spark plugs in, just insert the plug into it, you can get them fairly seated with it and tighten from there, also doesn't hurt to use some anti sieze. Workshop manual states 14-20nm for the plugs 👍 something else to keep an eye on is the exhaust manifold bolts, they love backing out.
Hey all this rarely occurs but when I start my my car it sometimes shakes while it is in park then when I I put it in reverse or drive it still shakes while driving then it smooths out and stops. Not sure what the issue is I haven’t changed spark plugs since i bought the car at 200000km not sure if this could be the issue
Good job…!! I have similar concerns and have been looking at videos on how to test coil packs with a multimeter…… might be useful content in a future video….
Good Vid , watched while doing my coils for the first time...Jumped ahead a few times then came back to watch vid to make sure I didn't miss anything.... Two things... One .. Why are you running red coolant when Ba Turbo's came out with Green? (Preference?) And Two thought I would mention as I did my coils I noticed noticed the first coil lead at the front had some wear from rubbing . So might be a good idea to inspect all wiring for wear.....
Well done i though would not start the threading of the plugs with the ratchet in place always start with your fingers then attach the ratchet as those threads can easily be stripped on aluminum heads
@@deathlyhopei have a Bf xr6 buddy i know that, use the socket with extension only and start it by finger tightening then put the ratchet on understand
If your turbo barra is running high boost and has a miss up high toss the fancy plugs and put a set of copper cores in and the miss should be gone. Fixed mine anyway and yes the iridiums were gapped right down.
I have a 2014 XR6 (EcoLpi) with 76K, and get a few missfires. I installed new plugs and coils but no luck in my case. I will clean the throttle body next followed by checking intake manifold. I use Forscan app to read Total Missfire Recorded. Missfire only ever happens with cold engine, and only when in drive or reverse. I do not get any engine warning lights or error codes.
Its funny. Even ngk lists turns for spark plugs. Something like hand tight, then 1/2 turn for new plugs (to compress the washer). 1/4 turn for old plugs with washer already compressed. Also, turns and torque all depend on engine material, etc
Picked up a BA XR6T with 57000km's on the clock. I didn't even know there was a BA in Australia with such little K's ! It's booked in for a tune, intake and valve springs next week. You should do an exhaust change video. The Turbo 6 sounds too good not too !
The spark plug gap for a ba bf turbo engine is 0.9+-0.05 it's in the maintenance manual that come with my bf turbo model and the genuine part number of the ford spark plugs is AGSP22YE09 long life iridium
Hey Chris great video bro ... good old plugs and coils..great that there pretty cheap now days... Just new to RU-vid and found your channel best of luck bro
If you ever need work done that you can’t do yourself, or want anything performance wise done, I highly recommend Torque n Tune Caloundra! I don’t work there and I’m not sponsored by them or anything, just think very highly of them :)
As far as the oil goes, you’ll need to do rocker cover gasket, and replace the seals around the spark plug holes while you’re there, the VCT phaser seals should also be replaced When taking the rocker cover off, undo the VCT seals (4x bolts, 2 on each side) before undoing the rocker cover bolts, and pop the seals out before undoing the rocker cover!
Had similar problems on my AU tickford xr6, distributor seemed to do the trick, but got all leads and plugs done for peace of mind. Ran so well 2 years till i sold it, big regrets 1 year on though 😭
This is the one and only time you'll have that 10mm socket. Once this job's done that 10mm socket will run off to whatever mysterious dimension 10mm sockets go to.
@@MotoringBoxTV I have worn out 10mm sockets but losing them not much of an issue. I have a socket set that has 2 10mm sockets in it and both are still at home after 37 years Maybe I feed them right?
Very common problem with the BA. Don't buy the cheap green ones off eBay they stopped working immediately. i went to Repco and bought the right ones and problem solved. You didn't show us the fun part of getting the last screw out of the cover. I have a flattened waxed veggie box that I lay across the engine so I can lay on it to reach that last screw, it also saves the back.. You worked out the trick with number 6 plug way faster than I did. Well done. I can do it real quick now but the first time there were many harsh words spoken. I always put the oil filler cap straight back on to stop any bits falling in there. I also bought a long magnetic claw for picking up those bolts that do tend to get dropped . I see yours has much better average mileage than mine. If you clean out the throttle body your idle will improve a bit more. It's important to use the correct solvent though. It's amazing how much dirt gets into the TB. You did take us for a drive around Ipswich at night.
Them two piece BBM (Broad Band Manifold)'s on them EF - BF Falcon 6's all have the same common gasket failure 😄 Which is the usual place (where the upper piece bolts to the lower section of the manifold) Near the runner butterfly valves (short runners or long runners depending on load/rpm
That’s cool genuine ford coil packs don’t think you can get them anymore.. all your plugs looked to be all the same colour which is good but they look to be on the white side of things there maybe a vacuum leak or manifold leak I always clean and replace the rocker cover gasket everytime I do this service
When you get a miss up in the Revs, good old Valve springs will be causing that. That's my next job along with upgraded manifold studs and turbo studs.. id be checking those if I were you!
@@MotoringBoxTV yeah non suprised..id check the turbo too however its a manifold out job. It's not overly difficult but definitely worth doing, and replace the studs with nylock nuts. Otherwise its boost leaks galore.
Are you Ipswich based? Also- when you do the clutch, make sure to get a remote bleeder for the concentric slave cylinder (replace that too). Makes bleeding the CSC much easier (otherwise you frig arse around inside the bellhousing.
+1 Absolutely replace the CSC when doing the clutch, I've seen one fail because it wasn't replaced with the clutch. Given the cost of just doing it at the same time versus the cost of if it fails later, it's an absolutely must do
@@1993kawasaki no that's the "first" Springfield industrial estate it's actually on the other side of Camira to where Springfield is. I learned to drive in there as they were just starting to build it. It's now referred to as part of Carole Park which is actually where it is
VDO coil packs are way cheaper than genuine ford ones, almost half the price. But I understand buying genuine is usually the best option for some parts. I get the front wheel bearings for my fairlane from Ford, they are 3-4 times the price of aftermarket ones and last 10 times longer.
My sisters BA Turbo had an idle problem so I did genuine plugs and coil paks which made a bit more power and a slight improvement in the idle. The problem was the idle was still not smooth. So what I found out was the hydraulic oil had leaked out of the engine mounts. Once the engine mounts were replaced the engine idle was perfect. The engine mounts are hydraulic and the oil had leaked out so they did not work properly.
Hey love your vidio's mate. My ba turbo had the same issue with oil around coils. I purchased a gaket kit for the rocker cover. Each cylinder tube has a small rubber gasket that fails also causing missfire.
Yup I will most likely be ordering a kit and checking the coil packs the next time I have the intake assembly off. Mine didn't seem to have leaked very much, but if there's any oil in there again I'll have to change the seals over.
