Hi Adam, I have a built zf 6 speed with billet input shaft (rated 1000rwhp) and torque converter 3500 high stall. Brand new not used $10k aud. Can sort shipping out too.
Mustang Lifestyle anytime I see someone attempting to correct you when you were right from the beginning, I giggle... not many really know the difference between a GT350 and a GT350R 😂
We had a supercomp dragster with a ford 460 and a powerglide, simular issue there with having to have an adapterplate for the trans and spacers for the tourqe converter. We went for the simple route and ran longer bolts (high grade) and fired up the lathe and made some spacerwashers in the correct size. Due to the fact that we might want to swap converters around now and then we opted to not weld the washers on. Ran just fine in our setup (900hp 850kg car 1.2 60s) and i've seen plenty of people use similar setups on heavier vehicles and it works just fine. I'd say skip the welding part just in case you want to get a different converter in the future.
Would be a ton stronger to just face mill the bell hosing down and weld a correct one on. Also at that much power they should have a sfi bellhousing anyway.
Why not just put the spacer between the crank and flexplate? seems much easier, since thats how the 4l80e plates work, and some guys even have found longer reach starters to help line it back up with the teeth on the plate
Adam I’m sooo happy you’re doing this build. I’ve been wanting to do a barra build myself but don’t have the resources to do so. So I’m glad to see an American doing an awesome barra build that engine is NASTY!!!
Usually all the time between the beginning of the video and the title content is boring, but you guys really knock it out lol I’m jealous of how much fun y’all are having 🤣
I'm sure you have thought of this already but just wanted to throw it out there, you are friends with someone that uses very high power cars that has had alot of experience with torque converters and has alot of knowledge I'm sure he can spare. Call cleetus and james!!! HELL YEAH BROTHER All the best and cant wait to see the progress
its actually great seeing you guys have fun like this. you guys work hard. I respect that the car will take time to get tuned just right. That barra looks SEXY in that stang
It's very common to have flex plate bolts come loose on Barras that can cause issues down the track. Even with ARP bolts it can still happen. There are kits to help stop them backing out and some people do weld the bolts to the flywheel (usually frowned upon approach though). Might be something to be cautious of/ future proof when putting the trans back in.
If that happens at barely over 400 hp, imagine the mess if it could reach 750-800!!! I'd be stepping back and reconsidering that 4-bolt design. Those 1/2" fasteners don't look nearly stout enough to carry that kind of power. Either the explanation in the video just skims the surface of the issue or some serious "skull sweat" needs to be applied. It's going to be a beautiful machine when all the bugs are worked out. You'd never guess it had been through an engine fire. Very nice job!
not sure, maybe there’s something about the 6r80 that he likes or just since it’s a bit more unique and a chance for these other companies to use his car as a test bed.
They should contact HUGHES PERFORMANCE in Arizona to see if they can help. They are very familiar with the Barra and have specialty parts that might help with the transmission. Here they talk exactly about your problem and provide a solution. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q_HvTftawaU.html
@@benkay1986 It's about right for a 4" straight pipe with no mufflers tbh. Most barra's with a 4 inch have a magnaflow or other decent muffler to pull the sound down a bit
@@JohnDoeC78 lets see you aussies do something no ones done before.. and it work first attempt. Them straya parts cost 3x as much and work half as good!
As an Aussie. ZF trans in a great idea. You won't have those problems and minor extra mods needed. A little confused on the 420hp but once everything is up and running, you should easily make 1000+hp. Can't wait to see how this goes! Most exciting build on ever
Recommendation: keep the threads in the spacers and weld them to the flex plate instead. This reduces the length of bolt that's in shear. Otherwise you have a long, unsupported length of bolt that's able to wobble around in that spacer and the bolts will eventually fatigue.
You'll still sheer em off, better off with converter bolted directly to the flywheel , there's so much force on a torque converter it's rediculas, u really don't want any potential weaknesses, as when they go bang they go big and your floor ain't stopping that shrapnel, I've seen em go and bits of flywheel and torque converter go through the roof, go through people's feet, floors u name it ,it's scary as shit 😳 personally I'd be using a scatter sheild and a ballistics blanket around that area if going for serious power or drag racing as no way I'd wanna lose a foot or a leg from it letting go 🤔👌
I hope Adam never really loses followers or views because this man has such a great team and people surrounding him that it would be terrible to see this end
This build has kept me clicking so fast any video I’m previously watching. Can’t wait to see more of it. I would love to see this against a 3.7 cyclone mustang that is around the same power level. Mine makes 500 wheel maybe you can get someone local that has one to do some runs and compare.
Blinkyo probably but it would be cool to see the 2 head to head with same setups to see how the compare against each other also same power level. Btw mines not that fast lol I wish I had money for internals to get more horsepower and switch to turbos. The barra engine is one I would love to build on an s550 mustang or s197 it would be a dream
@@codybrown6277 Aluminium spacers aren't really gonna cut it imo; too soft! The aluminium can just squish and deform and let the bolts fold over. Need something tougher I reckon.
So I’ve followed you since the bmx days and I’m loving the car content and how your channel has matured. I challenge you to hit one SICK line on your bmx in your next vid
At the very end of the video, if you look at the front tire, you can see what looks like to be shavings flying out on the deceleration of the Dyno pull. A small chunk even bounces through the wheel and lands right next to it too. After going back in the video, it happened on the 4th pull when he drug it out to a higher rpm. Next pull is when the noises came up! Good call on playing it safe!
pretty sure when you guys re-installed the pedals you didn't install the brake switch right. there's a specific sequence to install that switch that makes sure your lights don't flicker.
Most LEDS will appear to flicker on a recorded video depending on the camera. I believe this happens when the frame rate of camera syncs up with the pulses of the light. But I could be the furthest from correct also. Someone correct me 😂
Mark G the flickering you are talking about does happen but can only be seen in a video. They obviously saw the lights flicker in real life lol so that’s different.
I'm scared, I hope the Barra is okay. The intro helped Parker helped too. Parker is awesome. Always makes me smile. Okay, now Adam with the nitrous mess. This video is just fun
It would be so cool with a hollinger. Aussie motor, Aussie trans... plus you can either shift it ‘manually’ or hook up a controller and paddles. It’s an awesome build. Love it.
Trenton Reese my dad told me that when he was younger and working the beaches digging for shellfish he said he would drink like 8 pots of coffee or something ridiculous like that My mind was blown
Trenton Reese well it didn’t get him in a good place as well as like the 6 Red Bull’s a day or something it put him in the hospital almost having to have surgery it was pretty crazy and I remember it all and I was super young This was all on night shift And he smoked like 2 packs a day Thinking about it he was a lil unhealthy
It can have that effect on people if they don’t have adhd or add, I’ve seen people on adderall acting like they’re on a 4 day binge of snorting high grade coke off strippers asses while slamming bang energy drinks to combat the cottonmouth
I’ve abused the shit out of addy’s in my time it really does make you hyperactive and you gotta keep moving and keep busy or else you’ll feel like shit
While you are at it you need to dowel the flexplate as its a very common thing for them to come loose as well (as 6 cyl are inherently unbalanced). Atomic do a dowel kit
Velds I couldn’t see them both buying a 1 of less than 250 made TME EVO but hey it happened, instead of being a downer lol how about you look at it for what it is 😂
That brake light issue you were talking about actually happened to my 1995 Honda prelude and I put just a long bolt and nut in place of the little hole where the oem plastic bit went
I was at Ford Factory in Geelong when the first Prototype BA Barra Turbo was made, we had 600hp at the wheels using all factory Ford parts including Ford PCM.
Plenty of guys getting around down here with TH400's and Glides as well, if your contemplating alternatives that may be easier to source in the US. Hughes performance may be worth speaking to as well.
Right!? It’s less than a month out! I’m curious to know all the changes that took place and his thoughts on running pro 1 this year. But I’m sure we’ll get one soon
holy crap it must be going on 10 years of watching adam on youtube and i cant remeber his swearing! im not angry ir anything but his on camera persona never swears, thats single tips job!
You know...I'm not even mad at those different exhaust tips....it's definitely an Adam thing. Left side is the drift side. Right side is the street side. Time to do different rims and half wrap lol.
Who's stupid bloody idea was that adaptor design? If you need a mechanical solution call Benny from Benny's Custom Works.....if it's Electronic Call Scotty from Haltech OZ......they can sort anything!👍🇦🇺
Its actually standard procedure on a most combinations of aftermarket torque converters and flexplates, just in most cases there isn't a 3/4 spacer like in the above combo. My CircleD converter and B&M flexplate requires spacers, it only needed 3/16 though for the required flexplate/converter clearance, this is in a 6.0 LS and 4L80 combo.....If theres no spacer there, the torque converter doesn't engage the trans fluid pump and the converter eats itself from metal contact.
@@rustysausage69 yeah I understand that.....I've done plenty of conversions myself....but trying to put 1000hp through a few turns of thread is just plain irresponsible.
@@allandriver2066 Agreed. I suggested in another comment that they have someone drill out the TC thread bosses and weld in a threaded tube end that has the same stick-out as the spacer, and use an ARP bolt instead of a grade 8. I think that'd yield more thread engagement, and it wouldn't put nearly as much radial-load on the bolt. If it broke like it did in the vid at 400hp, itd be much more catastrophic at 800-1000hp with the same bolt/spacer setup. Not good
@@rustysausage69 Short crank LS with 4l80e requires a spacer thats 0.400" not 3/16ths (0.1875") usually, better check your measurement again before you kill a pump lol ...but they also space between the crank and flexplate as do most good adapters...rather than doing it between the TC and Flex
@@Shadow0fd3ath24 Dunno where your .4" spec came from but its not applicable to my combo. I also don't have a restalled 4L80 converter nor is my flexplate a usual 4L80 unit so i can't say its wrong. Pump engagement for my 4L80 combo was less than 1/8" space between flexplate/TC WITH the correct spacer used and the spacer I used is a 3/16 washer for the proper clearance spec.
@@yac7774 mate. just stop. Pronunciation is how a word is said by the sound. And since a lot of Americans seem to say "aw-see", I'm telling him how it sounds for him and others to know how to say it. Ozzy is how it sounds, and if you say Ozzy, you are saying Aussie, correctly. Jeez... dunno how I've had to actually explain this to you, but there it is..
When you're doing something that hasn't been done before your bound to find issues. But you improve it and make it work. You have a great crew and surrounded by good people will be killer when it's done.
@Leroy Baker head studs are a common point of failure in Barras. Everyone that knows Barras knows that the first supporting mod you should do is stronger head studs.
The converter will be unbalanced now by welding it. With it spinning that fast there’s a reason why it’s CNC machined. If you put the exact same amount of filler rod per bolt I can see that working. Something to keep in mind(if u see this and if gets thumbed up) , love the videos.
As an Aussie all I can say is get the ZF Trans no more problems. Admire your work and by all means try your adjustments, Hope it all goes well. Benny's Cresta Easy holds over 1000 HP
20:52 Just a PSA, if anyone ever does this to your beer you can just put your thumb over the top and turn it into a pressurized super soaker and spray down whoever did it.
I got a zf in my falcon, they’re brilliant 180,000kms, never gives up. They hold gears good but if you’re going above 550hp you’d need a built one. Brilliant gearbox tho! Love them to bits
Benny from Bennys custom works has developed a custom 8 bolt converter with Hughes performance. It was made for the exact issue you're running into. Although developed for the 6hp gearbox it would be worth the call to the Hughes guys to check it out.
