HEY THAT'S MY WATER!! In Barrage we head to the French Alps to generate all of the electricity and the drama by stealing water from each other and locking our machinery in personal wheels of impatience. Use your workers wisely and be careful with your timing, this game takes no prisoners but it is easier to understand than the table space it requires would imply...

Thanks for stopping by for our board game review of Barrage. We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

Hi Amy (and Maggie) I know this is an older video but its the first time I have watched this. This is a really good game. Like you said its a beast to learn, the first game we didn't play it quite correctly but it did fall into place and I loved the second play. Unfortunately Emma isn't that keen on it so no idea what we are going to play it again!

I desperately want to get this to the table. Its been gathering dust since last year. The cascading water is such an amazing idea. I know I'm going to love this one I just have to get it to the table!!!

This is a superb game, jumped in my top 10 in 2019, and now it's a bit lower just because I couldn't get it to the table more due to the pandemic. I need to play it with 2p once as well, though I suspect I'll still like it better with 3 (or 4, but it's quite long then).

By the way, this is probably better said here than on the Scythe video: Barrage is what I wanted Scythe to be. A high interaction euro. Scythe disappointed me, even after trying expansions (all but the campaign, and I looked at what is in that one too).

@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
We still haven't tried it with more players but looking forward to it. I think your interaction tastes are definitely closer to mine (Amy) than Maggie's...! I had asked Jamey about Sycthe expansions but he said that none of them increase the interaction THAT much (designed that way purposely).

Congrats on the new camera and good luck with the play throughs. I like Barrage a lot and since it appears you plan on keeping it you might want check out the expansion, after you play a few games and get comfortable with the base game play it makes a nice addition. The board gets really crazy at higher player counts. I like that Tommaso built dams in his "day job" and that you see that all over this game. Have you seen that Simone is working on a new game wth Cranio, Golem, that looks pretty cool? Have a great day!
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Wow thanks for sharing that about Tommaso, so cool!!! We hadn't seen Golem either, I'm surprised by the theme from those three designers. I can't wait to try Barrage at a higher player count.. what does the expansion add to the experience? Thanks Shawn for your ongoing support!

@@ThinkerThemer The expansion is not one of those must haves, unlike some expansions that "fix' things in games. The base Barrage is solid so this expansion adds new strategies and complexity to the game. First, is a new player/character option whose asymmetric power is getting more water on the board. It adds some new executive officer and advanced technologies with new powers. External Works are a new kind of contract that uses your machineries instead of power to fulfill. There are also new structures called Private Buildings you can construct. So there are more worker spaces and new paths to points (and victory??). That's why i think it is a good expansion if you like the game and have been playing it a bit (or plan on playing it regularly in the future). It adds new stuff to the game and that added strategy/complexity in my opinion needs an understanding of the base game before you chunk more into a game that already has a lot going on. Enjoy!!
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
@@shawnmincer8231 thanks for the great summary! We hadn't read that much about the expansion. We are not huge fans of asymmetric powers but the external works and new buildings sound very interesting. Once all this Spiel hotness dies down we might get time to look into it 😅
@shawnmincer8231
@shawnmincer8231 3 года назад
@@ThinkerThemer my reference to asymmetric powers might have been misleading. What I was referring to was the differential production bonus each faction gains after the third build. The new one that comes with the Netherlands adds water.

Yay new camera! I have still only played this 1 v 1 automa, but I really want to see how crazy the board gets at higher player counts. Feels like that is where the game will shine a bit more for me versus other WP games. I am thinking about trying to do a 1 v 2 automa before putting it back in the box. Automa took a bit to get used to though...
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Yes I'm hoping it gets even better with 3 or 4 players.. I suspect 2 is sub-optimal to given that you don't close down any of the water systems. Shall we set up a game on retirement island?

Maybe it is just mechanics we are very familiar with...! Have you played it with a bigger group than us? I think that would really make the choices difficult...! 😅

Great video! Just discovered your channel from the Pax Pamir review you did and happily subscribed afterwards. :) In regards to Barrage, where do you see the replayability? Is there a lot of variable setup or will the game probably play out very similarly if played with the same players and similar factions? Thanks and keep up the good work!
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Thank you for the sub and the lovely feedback! Glad to have you here 😊 Great question. For us, the replayability would come in from mix and matching the character abilities (slight advantages in different directions) but probably moreso from experienced players knowing how to offset / respond to the tightly competitive dam space. In terms of the gameplay it would be hard to deviate too far from core strategies for victory points because the game is linear in the need to generate electricity... so for us it is more about responding to other players and different player dynamics more than the game (for that reason we are more excited to play it with different and bigger groups than play more together). I've also heard that the expansion can help with replayability but we haven't experienced it. Hope that helps! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@ThinkerThemerThanks for the quick reply! Guess I'll have to hunt down a copy and see for myself, the game looks intriguing and I do love my heavy euros. :) With the lockdowns going on it's not easy to bring together more than 2 people at a time these days but I suppose the turmoil that's bound to unfold with ~4 players should be a blast to behold.
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Yes same for us, cant wait to try it with more people. It's definitely heavy to learn at first but not too heavy to play if you're used to worker placement. Thanks again for commenting ☺
@MaVarcon
@MaVarcon 3 года назад
@@ThinkerThemer Be sure to update us when you get a chance to experience it? :D What I've found with heavier euros is that it's far less tiresome to learn complex rules if they make sense from a thematic point of view (Robinson Crusoe is a great example of complex rules that just make a lot of sense).
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Absolutely we will! Maggie (themer) finds that much easier too... whereas I really prefer a clean read on the mechanic (typical 😂). We are allowed to travel outside of our lockdown perimeter in one more week, so I will definitely pack this one for a games night !!!

After hearing your thoughts on Brass (in the top 10 thematic Euros) I was wondering what you thought of this one, as it shares some similarities in providing different components of production in a semi-cooperative way. I liked it more than you appeared to and I like what the Leeghwater expansion adds too. The expansion might make it feel less linear, as it adds more WP spots and some additional variety.
@ThinkerThemer
@ThinkerThemer 3 года назад
Oh I didn't realise it added more WP spots Paul, thanks for letting us know! This is a strange one because everything came together for us so quickly and easily.. such a familiar feel to the mechanics even though a lot of it was quite unique. We are still yet to play it with a greater player count which might help but for now we really liked it a lot but for some reason always think to bring out other WP games over this one... 🤔 thanks for watching and taking the time to comment about the expansion ☺

@@ThinkerThemer I've only played it at 3 and 4 players, so I can't compare with a 2p experience, but I think it is the interaction which makes this game so great. BGG feedback seems to agree the higher player counts are best.

Barrage is ok at 2 players, but it shines at 4 as a tight interactive euro. You should play it with 4 if you get the chance.
