Interesting! I’d like to see how well that aquarium heater performs when the really cold weather kicks in. If it’s enough to continue growing lettuce and carrots, I’m sold!
It seems to do fairly well until -10c as that is only how cold it has been so far this winter the other 2 barrels are full of water but no heat in them
@@offgridwanabe I have been thinking on using solar hot water panels with a propane water heater and/or wood stove heater to keep the greenhouse warm when it is extremely cloudy.
I think water is the way to go as once warm it lasts so long even at -10 the water barrels keep it from freezing easy enough and the fish tank heater only draws 500 watts @@rongray4118
The only thing that may be better than water is sand because you can get it hotter than water so a barrel of 400 degree sand would last all night. @@rongray4118
@@offgridwanabe the solar array for supplying 48 volt power seems to be moving in the direction of 15k-20k range now if we want to keep the Absolyte Battery Bank operating. How many kilowatt are you producing and storing. I must have missed the statistics on your entire system - because I cannot recall. Thank you for your reply!
We are looking at a similar set up for our soon coming modified Earthship style greenhouse. I am trying to figure out how to power the elements directly off solar panels or as a dump from wind turbines.
Resistance heating off solar is pretty easy it is all about the ohms of the element as that is the part that never changes in the calculation once you get the element. I still believe dump load is the way to go as then it is free and extra power you cannot use at the time. Again more panels lol.
