In which JB and JF combine footage from the cooper's workshop at Zaanse Schans in the Netherlands with footage from a colonial faire in Orem, Utah that featured a coopering demonstration in order to get a better appreciation of the incredible, hand-made precision of barrels.

My grandfather used to do this. They would set up camp in the woods in Alabama and bring my mother along to help. Good times.

I have thought about trying my hand at amateur barrel making, but there are just so many hoops to jump through.

Hey maybe once you get really good at smelting and forging. You could try your hand at making a barrel from scratch, metal strips and all, maybe even try aging some homemade wine in it.

That tool you called a riveter is not that, it’s a punch to make a hole in the steel hoop. And the welded hoops are used when manufacturing the barrel to ensure a standard size is maintained. Once the barrel is assembled, the barrel is measured to size the riveted hoops, hoops are installed and the welded hoops are removed and reused. And finally, if the barrel leaks, you can loosen the rings and insert reed in the leaky slot and re-tighten the rings to patch the hole.

Watertightness from wooden wedges seems weird until you remember that that's how stopgap damage repair on ships is done.

Very cool, I assumed they would have sealed the joints with pitch or something. You make great videos! I love the way you approach these wide-ranging topics with such curiosity and critical thinking. Blessings to you and your family, particularly your son. -JT

Barrels are awesome because you don't need machinery to handle them. They roll! And still, they don't roll when you don't want them to, because the wide waist and narrow lids let you roll them on their ends, so that they stay where you put them. The tapered shape also means that when they're lying on their side, you can pass a rope sling under the ends and hoist them with block and tackle, and unlike a box or a drum, they'll stay in a simple figure-8 selvagee. You can hoist them aboard ship, load them on a wagon, or get them in and out of a shop with no more handling equipment than a ramp, a pulley and a rope. On the old Nantucket whalers, the two hands who didn't go in the boats on the hunt were the ship's cook ... and the cooper. If the cooperage weren't done right, the whole voyage would be for naught. The barrel didn't meet its demise because there was a better container. It fell out of favor because the invention of the pallet and fork lift allowed worse but cheaper solutions to be problem.

That was actually a Punch not a Riveter!!! The extremely curved knife was a two handled Scorp, the less curved knife with the straights on the sides before the handles was a Cooper’s drawknife used to concave the inside of the staves.

@@GoodandBasic gotcha! I'm just curious because the quality isn't quite up to par with most videos today. Your content is great and interesting, however.
