Barrett Deems played with jazz masters such as Louie Armstrong, Red Norvo, Jimmy Dorsey, Trummy Young, Charlie Barnet, Muggsy Spanier, Joe Venuti and many others. He was in the 1956 movie “High Society” with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly (a still from which is part of the slideshow above).

He was 80 years old when this was recorded...the man had energy to spare! Underrated and underappreciated! Great drummer!

I was at this show in the 2nd row with my friend Keith who new Barrett from childhood , I had the good fourtune to meet Barrett a few times , he was a very kind , he told me he never took drugs and that is why he lasted as long as he did . I had known Barrett for about two years when we both ended up at a Louie Bellson show at Ricks Cafe...the Holiday Inn in Chicago. After the show, and after a bit of good natured heckling on Barrett's part: "you bought those damned things Louie, why don't you learn how to play em?"He introduced me to Louie and overall it was a great evening. To say he was not a fan of rock drumming was an understatement. "Stay away from Rock, all those guys are dead after a year."Overall anyone that ever met him knows a character he was. 'The world's oldest teenager' as he came to be known. The "worlds fastest drummer" became his motto after playing the London House one night with a sign outside that said "worlds greatest drummer" As fate would have it Buddy Rich walked in and said "Worlds greatest drummer? Really?" The next night the sign was changed to "fastest." Just thought I would share a few of my Barrett stories here.

Nice review on Barrett, He also played with the one and only Jack Teagarden. Both didn't get the recognition they deserved Thanks for sharing

Barrett was a very nice guy. I usta go see him at the sunnyday tap and one night finally dragged my little brother there to see him. He was not playing, he was sitting at a table with an a-hole named Kurt E. He invited us to join them and I could tell he was very sick. While Kurt was trying to suck-up and Barrett was insisting I come see a labor day show he was going to be doing in the suburbs I was insisting the waitress bring him a glass of water and call his wife to get him home. RIP BARRETT
