Hypothetically a player could commit two penalty offences and have to go in front of the judiciary if they're unlucky enough that their team was under a warning both times, the judiciary should be reserved for straight red card offences.

Long may it remain that way. Cheers from Downunda.

With direct head contact, with or without clear evidence of the precise contact, what we do have is wether the head jolted backwards (meaning direct contact) or if it is jolted forwards first (then the contact was not direct with the head). Physics. The same goes when applying downward pressure when scoring a try, if the ball immediately bounces up or not etc…

Last week Nigel said that Owen Farrell's actions - leading with the shoulder - is always illegal and that's why there was no mitigation to take into account. In this instance Barrett is diving on players on the floor while leading with the shoulder, absolutely madness if you ask me. How then is there mitigation for Barrett if his actions is also always illegal from the start? Just an interesting thought.

@alexpotts6520 in Rugby, you will never see a player run up and scream into a refs face like they do in football. You are taught from a very young age that the ref is the boss and only the captain is allowed to talk to him, and then respectfullyat that. There something honorable about this approach, and to see massive names in football screaming at the refs sours my view on them, no matter how good they are.

I know it’s the law but I do feel sorry for any player that suffers a “double yellow” red card when one of those is really a team card for too many penalties. Two yellow card foul play events, fair enough. But to suffer the same sanction when one of the events may be no more than being a foot off side etc seems tough.
@Oakeybloke
@Oakeybloke 9 месяцев назад
I would say that if a player's on a yellow card, they need to be more careful than Barrett was. Going off your feet, leading with the shoulder, against a player on the floor and not even near the ball is risky at the best of times. Doing that on a yellow card is just silly, in my amateur opinion 😊
@matthewjackson5128

Hi Nigel love the concept of your Whistle Watch which will keep all refs on their toes during the RWC; a question for you please - why do refs allow certain players (an AB & Wallaby scrum-half come to mind here) to ‘milk’ penalties by deliberately passing into clearly retreating players? Surely this unsportsmanlike practice is no different to players trying to hold/lock players into an offside position (which IS sanctioned, sometimes). Thanks

@Pandemonis
@Pandemonis 9 месяцев назад
The foot touched the line, so he was outside the 22-50m zone. Like if your foot touches the line, it's a touch; if the ball grounds on the line, it's a try, etc. Nigel wasn't very clear about the inside/outside part of it, though, indeed.
@riri1718

@elainec6687

Are you referring to the *sideline?* Any contact with the sideline means they're in touch, meaning any further play by them following on from that is discounted. A player in touch BEFORE grounding the ball means the try wouldn't count. Here, Nigel is referring to the lines ACROSS the pitch, the markers like the halfway line, 5m line, 22m line etc.
@elainec6687
@elainec6687 9 месяцев назад
Actually, I can understand your confusion. I just watched it again, and he *does* say "the goal line, the try line, the TOUCHLINE, or the 22m line"! Slip of the tongue I reckon, he likely meant the centre line, considering context 🤔 That's what my brain heard it as anyway, even though he misspoke 😂

Hi, Can someone please help to explain why defending players in a sprinters starting position are penalised for being off side. I ask because surely logic dictates that when they lift their hands to move forward their only body part touching the floor, their feet, puts them onside. So when the defending player lifts his hands he essentially "retires behind the applicable offside line" and is thus onside. So which law is being applied to say they are in fact off side?

@@StaalBurgher0 Thank you for proving my point. 1 - that wasn't a maul, it was a ruck; 2 - rucks happen all the time where players are not bound with their full arm (just by holding on), and nobody ever says anything about it; and 3 - neither one of referees questioned Moodie's bind, other than asking whether he lost contact before the ball came out... the penalty ended up being for offside. Hi Nigel. I have a question about the NZ/SA game, especially the penalties awarded against NZ at Lineout Time. It seemed to me that the All Blacks were holding their line and not advancing while the Boks would lower their jumper across the line and into the static All Blacks, who were penalised for early engagement. After the second penalty, Sam Cane seemed to raise this point with the ref. This seemed quite obvious at the All Blacks were lined on the 5M line and did not cross it while the Boks Jumped towards and lowered the jumper on the 5M line. It is time the IRB did something about the continual penalties deliberately being given away by the defending side within 5 metres of their tryline. Only after 4 or 5 penalties have been awarded, does the referee issue a formal warning and possibly a card if there is another offence. This tactic often results in the defending side foiling the attack, but spoiling the game for viewers who want to see a fair and attacking game. I BELIEVE ALL PENALTIES AWARDE TO THE ATTACKING SIDE WITHIN THE 5 METRE LINE SHOULD, IF CONVERTED, BE WORTH 4 POINTS. This will make teams think twice before resorting to foul play.

I saw it as well - and he was trying to correct his error - but he was somewhat illegal - kind of like players holding another player over the ball - and penalty for not clearing away - Just unlucky as ref was primed - like ABs pushing early - both sides set to push early - just have to play to ref - Can't remember if this game or Crusader game just gone - my side made a tackle and clear release - Ref deemed not held - Just the way it is - As long as ref consistent throughout game - just have to learn to adjust - A good reminder to ABs of loss in semi to England in WC - adapt quickly to ref - use their bias to your advantage

NZ were well passed official warnings after 7 in a row pens before that, any engagement in play from that offside position was gonna cop a card.

@@TheCryptoSniper true. I suspect though, that the SA tactic of keeping the receiver in the air at 5m lineout / drive time (in order to force the opposition to either lay off defence or commit the infringement) may yet be looked at as something either undefendable and needing a law change, or it is what it is, work it out. The ABs did not deserve to win that game in any way, they played so poorly. Just interested in the interpretations and challenges around what I think are dodgy things in rugby (clearing out too much off and away from the ruck etc…).

He got up from an offside position and played the half back. Pretty cynical and an easy decision after the warnings imo.

With the way rugby is played now, and with so much focus on head clashes, is it time to relook at the red card penalty. Any team has no chance now being a man down for over 40min. What if it was a 20min period with the player off the field, then they can be replaced with someone off the bench?
@PeerAdder
@PeerAdder 9 месяцев назад
That was tried in the SH, in the Super Rugby Competition, and I think in the Pacific Nations Cup. It definitely has its supporters. During the trial, a player shown a red card for foul play could be replaced by a substitute after spending 20 minutes off the field. This tactical substitution sought to provide a compromise between maintaining a competitive contest and penalising serious breaches of the game’s laws. While the trial generated both interest and debate, it will not be extended to the Rugby World Cup. Furthermore, the 20-minute red card rule was not trialled at the recent World Rugby U20s Championship held in South Africa. There is an argument to say that because getting a red card as a result of one player's indiscretion is such a disadvantage to the whole team then the so-called "orange" card system is fairer. However, the best way to avoid getting a red is not to commit foul play or give away cynical or repeated penalties. We are talking here about (mostly) professional athletes who know the rules and the consequences for breaking them. Delayed punishment, in the form of (long) subsequent bans, may be far less effective in terms of keeping players honest than the immediate prospect of being dismissed from the field leaving your team one down for the rest of the game. I do think, though, that there have been occasions when the tackler genuinely could do nothing to avoid a head clash, say when their opponent changes direction at the last moment (intentionally or not) and is themselves very upright. While this is often mitigated down to a yellow, there is a case - and we do see this sometimes - for declaring it a "rugby collision" with no fault being apportioned to either player.

Endless 'penalties' (let's say 'offences') are inevitable in the modern game due to a) the sheer NUMBER of penalty-offence situations created by Rugby 'laws' and b) the way certain teams play predominantly to maximise forcing the opposition into committing such 'offences (offences which in themselves are not dirty or foul play... like 'offside'... a team HAS TO defend on its line and is so intent on tackle/defence it is inevitable they're going to say, get offside.... is the problem 'that they are offside' (and that this is a huge sin before god?) or that there are too many laws choking how a team can play, and esp defend???
@georgelane6350
@georgelane6350 9 месяцев назад
The issues occur because teams just repeatedly infringe, especially on defense. They have decided that cheating is more benefit than the punishment. This could be solved by increasing the punishment for penalties. In particular, giving team yellows based on penalty advantages, not just penalties awarded. If you loosened offside rules, then teams would still push just as hard against the newly relaxed rule.

Would like to know what Nigel thinks should happen to players doing a neck roll, few of these in the SA AB game but not looked at my by the referring team, seems strange

careful Neil, you'll have some SA fans saying that you're having a whinge about the ref!! Instead of your obvious and clear intention which is - 'Isn't a neckroll a penalisable offence?' All the best cuz.

There are things like this all the time that are done on the field to address stuff that is getting passed up or missed by the refs. Its a simple enforcer action letting the opposition know that they need to back down or someone will get hurt... on purpose.

Is going off your feet at a ruck now a yellow card offense, no head or neck contact, was it that dangerous?

Yes firing your body like a missile into a ruck is yellow. It's not the off feet part that makes it yellow.

How do you create the force necessary to clean out the Bok forwards if you can't go in too hard? It still has to be a competition for the ball.

@@scw3017 multiple options. Lift his leg and lift to the side. Pull him down onto the ruck. Lift his arms/torso upward and push. They're only human, the Bok scrum is not much heavier than the Irish or French. Wales played them a while back and the Welsh scrum was heavier
