Barry Bonds hit 762 home runs in his time in the Bigs, on top of 514 stolen bags, and an MLB record 2558 walks. Who else but Barry to walk over 2,000 times while still managing to break both home run records. Also was 4 RBI away from 2,000 in his career.

He's the Brett the Hitman Hart of baseball lol all kidding aside we will never see a guy this good ever again. He was the man before roids. When Big Mac n Sammy Sosa had that huge home run race Barry bonds had his best year to date at the time n noone talked about him n he said fuck this if I took roids like them I'd blow them away n honestly he did. Alot of pitchers were on shit too . Bottom line during that time with inflated stats n roids he was the best amongst everyone . Not to mention all the walks even with the bases loaded lol this guy saw one pitch a game maybe to hit n he would still homers out of the stadium . We will never see another Barry Bonds!

I remember watching the game against the diamondbacks I believe in 98 when Buck Showalter intentionally walked bonds in the 9th with 2 outs and a 2 run lead. I remember thinking what the hell is Buck doing? He gave them a free run. Then Brent Mayne grounded out and Buck's plan worked lol. That's the plate pressence and respect Bonds used to get. @DAngelo136
@DAngelo136 11 лет назад
How does it "stand to reason"? The 2 points that stood out were; 1. PED's effects were negligible at best. 2.The muscles used in hitting are not the same as the muscles that were targeted in their workout programs. Bonds was not being pitched to; see the amount of walks and intentional walks he received. Had he been pitched to more, it stands to reason he would have hit more homers and surpassed the record by an even greater margin. But you can't hit 'em unless you make contact.

There will never be a conclusive study as to the degree steroids increase home runs, but looking at the physics, and the numbers we can make a pretty accurate guess. Cheating is defined as, "Acting unfairly in order to gain an advantage, esp. in a game or examination" Working out/ eye surgery/ better nutrition does not fit this example since it is not against the rules. Using coke doesn't fit this definition either, since it does not give a player an unfair advantage over the competition.

No one is saying steroids make better contact. "Steroids might bring about a 10 percent increase in muscle mass. That extra muscle could help a batter swing five percent faster. And that extra bat speed could cause a ball to jump off the bat 4 percent faster." - Roger Tobin, Tufts University Also, if steroids have no real effect on home run production, why would any player take them and risk getting suspended from the game? Its not like steroids are an addictive or recreational drug.

The clips are courtesy of the MLB website, and they only chose some of his homers. I know baseball isn't a game of absolute strength. All I'm saying though, is that hitting a home run is a feat of strength. Its basic physics, increased bat speed will hit the ball farther. With better drug policies/tests, home runs are back down to where they were before the steroid era. If smaller stadiums, and tightly wound baseballs were the reason for increased home runs, why are home runs down again because of drug testing?

Why would a player take something with "negative effects" (because it hasn't been determined that PED's do have such an effect) I'll quote Jim Bouton from "Ball Four"- "If there was a pill that could guarantee you would win 20 games but would take five years off of your life, players would take it." Players in all sports undertake a risk when competing, football, basketball, baseball, hockey,etc. With millions of dollars at stake, it would be irrational for the player to NOT seek an advantage
@DAngelo136
@DAngelo136 11 лет назад
Then you'd have to add LASIK surgery, weight training, improved nutrition and coaching to the mix. With weight training, steroids are pretty inert. MLB Policy is why players are subject to suspension; there's nothing in the rule book regarding the condition of the player. The policy was originally put in place to discourage the taking of illicit drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and later on amphetamines, which by the way have been in use since the '40's

So would LASIK, weight training count as "cheating"? Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter under the influence of LSD, was he acting "unfairly to gain an advantage"? Suppose steroids don't offer an advantage, is it "cheating" then? None of the examples you've cited including steroids are in the rule book either, which illustrates my point, the policy is absurd because it was never formulated with performance enhancement in mind; it was done to prevent the decline of performance.

But if that were held to be true, then Canseco would be right, and the intelligentsia of the writers would be wrong (not the first time, BTW). Because "drugs" are a societal taboo, you can't have an objective discussion on the subject. Add to this, a prickly figure like Bonds, and you have

"steroids don't improve batting average. They improve power numbers" Wouldn't it stand to reason that BA would improve as hits increase? A home run is still counted as a hit. Overall, slugging pct hasn't increased and overall power numbers haven't increased since WWII. Have you also factored in the reduction of the mound and the "jackrabbit" ball and the smaller stadiums in the past 25 years? Think about it; he went from Three Rivers to Candlestick then to Pac Bell Park, and it's not a factor?
@DAngelo136

the question of ethics belongs to the realm of the players, not management; they have a moral hazard. Namely, that they benefit from the individual player's improvement, as they did with the Sosa/McGuire competition. So when Canseco is "blackballed" as he alleges for doing the same thing, he makes the point that there's a double standard and myopia on the part of the baseball establishment. MLB, for it's part is caught out there, so institutes a "study" in order to cover itself and reputation.

How useful is bat speed if you don't make contact with the ball? Now as a matter of physics, what part of the body generates this bat speed? Now if it isn't a matter of absolute strength but of speed, then strength is not really a factor, no? No one ever marveled at Ted Williams' strength or Willie Mays' strength and both men were under 200 pounds. How about pitchers? With increased "strength" how many have pitched over 90 mph or greater on a consistent basis? Power in baseball is a misnomer.

According to your website, steroid use, "might mean one extra home run a year for an average man." Considering Barry played roughly 20 seasons, and he broke Hank's record by 7 homers, it stands to reason that roids are responsible for him becoming the home run king. If steroids don't improve performance, it begs the question, why would any player be stupid enough to take something with only negative effects on his body and career. Did Barry secretly hate himself? Was he masochistic???

(con't) meanwhile tobacco and alcohol are not covered in the policy, although they're responsible for more aborted careers and deaths, not unlike the general population. In fact, steroids were not illegal to purchase or use prior to 1980. It was made illegal after Ben Johnson of Canada tested positive following his race in the Olympics. However, there has been no study done that positively connects steroid use to enhanced performance in baseball. Roger Tobin's opinion, notwithstanding.
