Goldwater personally desegregated his family's department stores in Arizona years before he ran for President. His opposition to the Civil Rights Act, while regrettable, was philosophical, not bigoted. He was a radical libertarian, not a modern MAGA. His late in life support for gay rights and other such issues was of a piece with his personal libertarianism. But the American public did not see it that way in 1964.

American Dixiecrats across the South ran for exits after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They're today's "Republicans" and fringe MAGA'tards. 🐥

@@markreetz1001 Mine too! I suppose he must have said that during the campaign. That's where I first heard it I would have been 15 & a half. The few of us who supported Goldwater had bumper stickers on our notebooks: 'AU + H2O' LBJ, one of the evilest men to steal oxygen, twisted this quote, with his bomb ad, to make Barry look like a kook, instead of him, a drunken, womanizing warmonger. Barry was K7UGA. I talked to him many times on air. (KA7DXK) When Barry died, the Natives gave him one of the most beautiful ceremonies I've ever seen! When they send you off, you are sent off right! lol This Republic would have been SO much better with Goldwater! Terrible waste of a Great Man!

I remember when he was running for president. One of the top 10 miss America contestants was Miss Arizona. Here talent was a ventriloquist with her dummy. The dummy said something like “don’t you love it here in Atlantic City with all this beautiful blue water?” Her answer was “in Arizona we have something better, we have Goldwater”. I was 13.

I remember a guy telling my dad, "If you vote for Goldwater we will end up bogged down in war." My dad voted for Goldwater. You know what LBJ did. Well, I guess that guy was correct. I say this as a memory from youth and it offers nothing regarding my personal opinion of Goldwater. Oh, and as a native Texan we apologize for LBJ.

The difference between Goldwater and today's GOP is that Barry would tell you exactly what he supported or was against. Today's GOP tells you that they aren't biased in one direction or the other, and then vote for every bill that creates a biased result that is the exact opposite of what they claimed.

One thing for sure, he'd be WAAY too liberal for today's GOP. Toward the end of his life, he was disgusted with the direction the party had taken, which leads me to wonder if he didn't completely divorce himself from the GOP. For that matter, he even had faint praise for Bill Clinton. How I wish Goldwater were alive and running today. If I vote, it'll be for either Trump or Biden. Not gonna say which, 'cause that's for me to know and you to figure out. Ideally, i wish Harry Truman and Barry Goldwater could come back to life and form their own ticket. One Trump slogan says "No more bullshit." But there's more than enough of it with him. I'd say that Truman and Goldwater were the closest this country's ever had no "No BS."

Goldwater did warn about the rise of the religous right and strongly believed strongly in the separation of church and state. He was also pro-choice and had no problem with gays in the military. He'd be something of a liberitarian today.

I think something that influenced Barry Goldwater was having a gay grandson. Barry was notoriously fun. He would dance on the piano at Christmas parties at his home.

His letters to U S DOD about his desegregating decisions for Arizona Military National Guard Units well before the US Army made it official are still in the AZ Military Museum. I met him several times in the mid 80's. He said Johnson told him a Jew would never be in the White House!

Bill Buckley, after Goldwater's death, and in his retirement years from The National Review, ventured on one last project to find America's 'true, last conservative.' While supporting Reagan politically on pragmatic grounds, Buckley never felt the 40th president was a true conservative, having come 'round to the movement in the early '60's - and riding upon the Arizona senator's coattails. So Buckley, like a latter day Augustine, looked for a beau ideal standard bearer. He landed on Goldwater, who, like Mr. God And Man At Yale, had been there from the beginning. And, like Buckley, had taken a great deal of ridicule and criticism for it along the way. So, it was a vindication, of sorts, for both old Cold War warriors. 🤔
