Everything you need to know to start on a lifetime of exploring this beautiful sound. The Barry Harris 6th Diminished scale is an essential concept for any #jazz musician wanting to add the ability to play movement and take their improvising to a whole new level.
In this lesson I talk about Bebop legend, Barry Harris and his 6th Diminished concept. I share all my findings from years of studying this theory and explain it all from the ground up. You'll learn everything, such as where this concept and scales come from, Barry's unique view on the theory of music, and how to fully use all these ideas.. (to name but a few!)
This video will connect all the dots for anyone who has dabbled with Barry Harris' 6th diminished concept as well as give you all the knowledge/tools you'll need to endlessly develop your own ideas.

There is one problem, I could not solve: if my melody goes a-b-c in the key of C and the chord is Dm7. The associated 6-deminished-Scale would be F6, which contains *Bb* on the deminished chord. How does that work together with *B* in the melody? *Example:* "fly me to the moon" Right in the first line: "let me play among the stars". *'let me'* sings *a* and *c* over Dm7. If there was a passing note *b* - Maybe a triplet a-b-c... ???

I’ve just found out about the sixth diminished world and using it for piano and I really love the way it pumps a melodic line full of movement. Haven’t quite gotten to the contrapuntal and drop voicings yet but man you’ve got it down. Watching you do the “or you can do this” and then play it perfectly like 20x in a row just shows how much you’ve worked on this. Seriously, you’re a phenomenal musician.

This is wonderful. Lovely tone. Barry tells great stories always resolves it with "art just outplayed those cats ". I'd imagine he did he is a window into different group of legends. I love Miles, Coltrane, dolphy, Wayne, geez everyone but he gives you a glimpse into an established industry that a young miles would enter at night after julliard. So fascinating. Gorgeous playing there is some Django Reinhardt sounds in scale for sure can see how dynamic it is. So many use it in so many ways

Thank you SO much for this video. I have scoured the net for an in-depth explanation on this topic, and this video is the BEST one. I have watched the Barry Harris videos and it's not as good as this was. You are an excellent teacher, your videos are concise, well organized and entertaining, but most importantly, they are practical. This video is for the advanced jazz players. I have been using these chords to create movement and harmony in my playing over the years but never knew the theory behind why they worked; your theoretical explanation regarding the negation of the five chord, or the 6th on the 5th concept gave me an UH HUH moment. I used to always use the five as a spring board to go outside, when I wanted to on a two five one, now I have got memorize some go too notes. Thx again.

What a brilliant tribute to the Mastro, Barry Harris! I'm a self-taught jazz accordionist from Cape Town and had benefited immensely from Barry's videos. Your succinct teaching makes it so much clearer to understand his condensed presentation. I hope Barry sees your work. Thanks a mil; bless you. I've just subscribed and liked your video.

I watched Barry Harris describe this at the piano, but had difficulties understanding the concept. This visual description is so helpful to me. Thank you for spending the time to show this concept. Great graphic depictions. Well done!

I consider my main instrument to be the piano. So, I discovered Barry Harris through piano. However, due to financial constraints, I only have access to an acoustic guitar. Your clarity of presentation, theoretical rigor and human connection with the music all motivated me to learn how to implement this sound. I hold myself to the same standard when I teach math and physics. Thank you so much. Please keep sharing your gifts.

I thought I've seen all the guitar channels out there that teached theory in an actual comprehensible way, but turns out I was missing out the best of them! Dude, the diagrams and the transitions are so smooth and clear, also your way of talking about it... Even pentagrams side by side with tablature! Thank you very much for your taking the effort to make these videos. Also, may I ask which program do you use to make the pentagrams transparent like that?

I learned this kind of stuff in a whole different way, and i always thought it's too oldfashioned. I've tried to make a concept with pentatonic scales modifying one note at a time and i've get pretty close to this. But when i'd saw this video, every piece just has fitted in its place. Marvelous, thank you!

Two months later. I've made progress so far but I feel like I'm learning slower than usual. It turns out that watching it all the way through has been good for me but as anticipated stopping and reviewing small segments and working on specific parts has yielded better results. Everything about this video is so well done, if it were lessons about digging trenches in the rain I might have mud on my boots right now.
