Comping effectively and sensitively is probably one of the most challenging things to learn as guitarists. So much of our time spent learning jazz chords is done learning these gigantic chord shapes. If you listen to great musicians though, especially pianists, they don't really play this way. Instead, they make use of little movements that elegantly describe the harmony, rather than these big huge block chords.
The famous 6 Diminished concept -- developed by Barry Harris -- can really help us unlock this way of playing chords on the guitar. Since it focuses on movements of chords rather than static grips, it can instantly make our chord accompaniments sound more natural and less heavy. It's also a great way to learn to play chord solos, but more on that in a future video!
In this week's lesson, I'm going to teach you guys all about how I use the 6 diminished concept to make my comping sound more like the stuff we hear great pianists play. There's tons to cover so let's get into it!

Very instructive on a lot of levels but especially with regards to the structural overlays with regard to scale positions and the movement adjustments in the borrowing concepts. This fills in some much needed gaps in my understanding. Thank you for an excellent video:) It would be lovely to see the other voicing and convolutions between voicings.

I was secretly hoping you would do a video about this! Your style and pace of teaching are excellent in my opinion!! I especially love the examples, since that is something that was hard to discern from any book or video out there I came across so far. I would love more videos about this concept if you find the time. As a Blues and Fingestyle Blues player, I am mainly looking to spice up my rhythm playing and add something different and this video really helps bridge that gap for me.

@dsg_studio 9 месяцев назад
@raquel-cruz-jazz thank you! All the tones actually come from my DAW. I'm using the latest version of amplitube with their maz18 amp model. Getting good clean tones from an amp sim is annoyingly difficult these days but I'm quite fond of this one. On gigs I use a quilter 101 head into a separate 212 cab. For practice I've got a little yamaha THR amp that does the job nicely.

Wow, that's an amazing lesson! Thanks for the incredibly informative info! I've known some of that stuff for years, but I don't really get a chance to use it much. I'll have to really go at a snail's pace and work on those chord scales with the diminished. I mostly play Blues style music that I work on my own originals and try recording when I get a chance. I'd be able to use a lot of those in small chunks for areas in the blues for sure! It definitely made me subscribe to so thanks for that!
@dsg_studio
@dsg_studio 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for subscribing! Yeah, this concept can seem really dense when you first encounter it, but once you start to realize you can use it over large swaths of chords it becomes pretty intuitive. Especially so once you know about the main substitutions. Happy practicing!

The leading tones right out of the 6dim scale seem to work everywhere. Picking substitutes in a chord progression is a little harder. Some the voicings are just hard, but they sound great as triads and double-stops too. I'll keep trying this 'til it smooths out. Thanks!

i would appreciate it if you had a video of applying this method to a jazz standard, describing in detail when and where you’ve applied it. as it’s currently presented, there’s a lot of working backwards to figure out what you’re doing over the 2-5-1 examples and the example of playing over Blue Bossa, and i feel like a more in-depth explanation would help illustrate the concept better.

If you were playing the Cmaj6 diminished scale over a 251 in C major, would you only use the D minor 6 diminished over the 2, a Gdom diminished over the 5 and the maj6 over the 1, or would you used the C maj6 diminished for the whole 251? Thanks, this video is great.
@dsg_studio
@dsg_studio 3 месяца назад
You could do it that way or you could play maj6 diminished over the whole thing since the scale contains its dominant and the ii chord is just a suspension of the dominant. Thanks!

Hi! I really enjoyed this video! Thank you 😊! Here is my question…. I took the Maj6 chord and it’s diminished 1/2 step below to create the maj6 diminished scale…. Then harmonized it!!! I got the inversions of the tonic…. But why are you saying you get the inversions of its tonic and it’s dominant? Aren’t you getting the inversions of its tonic and it’s diminished chord 1/2 step below? I know this can be subbed as a dominant I guess but just want to clarify… let me know 😊
@dsg_studio
@dsg_studio 8 месяцев назад
Yeah the diminished is functioning as the dominant in this case. So you get maj6 and dom7b9 and then all the inversions thereafter. Same goes for the relative minor. Hope that helps!

Barry Harris is obviously a titan but why does jazz have to be how he says it should be? "Barry says we need to be movement players." What happened to the individuality in jazz? Do we all have to be Barry disciples? His concepts, though amazing and insanely well thought-out to be sure, are just not really for me. I'm not a fan of the sound and the incessant 6 chords get a little irritating. I don't agree with his view that the maj7 sounds unresolved so just stick to 6 chords kind of idea. Though these sounds aren't really for me, nice video and I can definitely appreciate the concepts.
