Barry Lyndon: This video is split into 2 halves, because I had a copyright strike against my channel when I made it and I couldn't upload a video longer than 10 minutes. This first half deals with the underrated nature of the film and why its a masterpiece technical and as a story.

Barry Lyndon will never get popular affection. It's long, it's slow, it's subtle, and it's deeply, profoundly ironic. You and I know it's one of the best films ever made, and so do--hopefully most--cinefiles. I don't even know if I would want it to be a popular film. That would probably suggest there is something very wrong with it for the type of film that it is. I've watched it over and over again many times, but I would not subject anyone else to a viewing with a promise that they will like it. Odds are, they would be much happier spending the time watching something else. Moby Dick is one of the greatest novels of all time, but I don't expect anyone to pick it up. I'm just happy when someone does.

I’ll never get the “slow” criticism. Sure it’s long but soooo much happens in that time, and it’s highly entertaining if you’re actually paying attention. People talk like it’s a movie to mainly “appreciate” but I rewatch it often because it’s genuinely fun.

The key to Barry Lyndon is the music. It binds the picture and invokes the films mysterious depth. The film receives plenty of accolades for it's cinematography, but the haunting musical themes by Schubert and Handel are Kubrick's secret weapon that gives the film its magic.

I wasn’t distracted by the need for water closet breaks - and I could view it over and over again. It is perhaps my very favorite film of all. Best Wishes to all LYNDON fans, from Hogtown, Florida. @timmccaffrey1326
@timmccaffrey1326 6 лет назад
I'm not sure if this masterpiece is forgotten..certainly.no one who has seen it will ever forget this astonishing work of art and it's stunning music. Every aspect of this movie is outstanding, direction, cinematography, photography, set design everything is way beyond anything else ever captured on film. I think this movie is Kubricks masterpiece and surpasses 2001 in that it's accessible to everyone and not just to science fiction fans. The main battle scene was filmed not far from where I live in Ireland and I knew many of the people who took part in it. There wasn't enough soldiers for Kubrick to shoot the major battle scene he wanted, so he filmed the same group of men charging several times from different positions and then edited the film in such a fashion so that it looked like the army was several times larger than it actually was. This wasn't all. The same men had to change into the 'enemy 'uniforms and charge at an imaginary enemy and there are scenes in the movie where the same men are actually charging at themselves dressed in enemy uniforms!..but the whole thing is seamlessly brought together by a master craftsman at the peak of his powers.

Just watched it recently for the first time.....what an interesting character study.....we don't learn too much about Barry's desires and motivations...we don't really get to know him personally.....but what we DO get is a fascinating look at a VERY interesting individual who sort of creates his own destiny in front of our eyes over time.....and i honestly was totally enraptured by this film and the way it was shot....it was just unforgettable...i can't wait to watch it again in the future....artistically speaking,it's an absolute masterpiece....in terms of a sense of warmth,or morals and lessons to be learned, this film has NONE....lol.....it's a cold look at an even colder and very irresponsible asshole.....but it's so mesmerizing....loved it

I finally watched for first time Barry Lyndon on the big screen at the BFI in London. Worth the wait, incredible picture! Don't usually do costume dramas, but this is Kubrick. You just know how much time and research he would have put in to ensure even the board games they were playing were historically accurate. I only saw Barry Lyndon for the first time recently on RU-vid and boy was I blown away this film is a masterpiece in every way , imagine taking an actor like Ryan O Neil and basically by the weight of the movie you make him seem like Laurence Olivier, the movie is artwork of the highest order , you have to switch your brain into slow motion mode to take it all in , if you try to watch this just as a movie you are missing out you need to use all your senses and I mean smell and taste as well because you are literally sucked into every scene like as if you are within the film of the era it is like a Time Machine , you will come away from this movie enlightened even if you don’t realise it right away , it is for me one of the greatest movie ever made ..

I love this movie. Nobody else really seems to get it so I’m glad that there are quite a few people who appreciate it as well. The story had such a broad arch. Not only an arch but a hero’s journey. Although where most stories start with a tragic call to adventure, this one starts with the same (but the tragic call to adventure was caused by our protagonist’s flaws), and lets him off on the honest spot of a death in obscurity. Beautiful. Pure Kubric.

I remember people calling Barry Lyndon a misstep for Kubrick, but when I first saw it I absolutely loved it. Not just for its stunning photography and production design, but its tone, humor, irony and pacing as well. And of course the music and how it was utilized. I was asking myself, "Are people just not getting this film?". Is it too subtle? Felt sort of like an 18th-century 'Being There', or the like. Perhaps because I was already such a huge Kubrick fan, I went in preconditioned for his unconventional artistry, etc. But I loved it just as much as his other films which are so widely revered.

Far from a staid period piece devoid of a pulse such films tend to be, Barry Lyndon bursts with humor and energy. It is genuinely funny. As in, my God that’s funny and meant to be. Ryan ONeill, often regarded as stiff to some here, is the clueless fumbler, the butt of the joke in a world filled with them. But more than that, Kubrick brings the cameras back in time and exposes them as both beautiful and lacking in moral certainty. It’s a masterwork finally getting its’ due. Rising in best-film-ever lists and enjoyed with new generations.

Totally agree with you. This body of work is among the greatest achievements in Art. Right up there with Caravaggio, Renoir, Chagall.

I read a cool article about how Kubricks wife saw him watching BLyndon on tv one night, she left him be and later he walked out to the kitchen looking pleased and said "Thats a pretty good film" This is the only film that I've heard a story of him being pleased with his work as a viewer.

Thank you for advocating viewing this masterpiece. Please check your research on no artificial lighting having been used.📌It’s well-documented that the windows were covered with translucent material and banks of exterior lights were set up to maintain continuity of the interior shots. Perhaps the emphasis on the 0.7 Zeiss lens & candlelight obscured these facts over time. Thanks again.

I've not tired of Barry Lyndon. If anything, it's the second half of Full Metal Jacket where I lose my interest.

Believe me, I have watched the interpretations and analysis, but in the second half Kubrick just doesn't captivate me or engage me as much. I'll definitely watch it again with older eyes and see how it goes.

I'm looking forward to part 2. One thing I would say, which is probably something you could say about many many movies is, you're giving a lot of credit to Kubrick about structure, plot and character development that should more rightly be attributed to Thackery, but I can't say for sure here since I never read the book.

There are bluray boxsets of Kubricks work that contains this movie (thank God!) I've become obsessed with this movie. I believe there are many males like myself who can relate to Barry. He always knew his place, and worked his way through life without being tenured. From the British army to the Prussian army, he never cared to make an allegiance, but to survive.

Aside from its slow pace, the main reason this masterpiece doesn't get attention is that it deliberately thwarts the basic human desire to find a sympathetic "hero" with which to identify. Barry is NOT a hero--he is a fairly mediocre human being manipulated by circumstances, when he's not abusing other characters. Watching the film requires an adult ability to distance oneself from simpleminded emotional identification--something American audiences are almost categorically unable to do. You actually have to think more than feel--the emotional interest is generated by first thinking ironically about the character.

This movie deserves rewatches. I find that it is much funnier than people realize. I feel it is much more a dark comedy that even I first realized.

Thats a good point. Alot of Kubricks films are darkly funny but not obviously funny. Its been a while since I saw this, I'm probably due a rewatch soon!

@@_MUSTSEEFILMS_ there are some truly hilarious lines that I found myself actually laughing outloud. The monotone narration especially had some really funny lines. "To make a long story short, after 6...hours she was madly in love with him." Haha. And they line about how the war would take many scholars to fully articulate the reasons for the war that would take too much time to cover here" I also found particularly funny. I think Kubrick despite how serious of a man he was, was able to deliver some truly funny moments on screen. I think Tarantino does this too, no doubt influenced by Kubrick.

@@robertjacques6812 Yeah agree. I read a book called 30 years by his side, its about one of Kubricks personal assistants and gets into how Kubrick lived and worked and he does seem quite funny and found of humour through the book.

My all time favourite movie. I'd never heard of it when I saw it on iTunes and was bored, so thought I'd give it a go. Immediately the stylistic feel of this period piece, which is one of my least favourite genres, drew me in and made me want to watch ever-closer. With wry wit, great narrative, wonderful aesthetics, glory & tragedy throughout, I was engulfed in the end by satisfaction. Love this movie! X
