Long time mates Barry and Colin made Barrys FX fly. Barry discusses how he drove the car and Colin explains what he did to the FXs engine. Please Subscribe!
Barrys Holden passion shows through when he buys back his FJ ute after it was flooded.
Colin a legendary engine builder also explains how he built Alan Jones first race car (a go cart) with Otto Stone while working for Stan Jones.
Colin discusses the success with Larry Ormsby in the XR and XW GT Falcons over the quarter mile.
Colin talks about being poached by Fords Al Turner to work at the infamous Lot 6 on the factory Falcon GTs leading to building the engines for the 1973 Bathurst 1000 win by Allan Moffat and Ian Geoghegan in the Ford XA Falcon GT Hardtop. He talks about Allan Moffats major rollover at Phillip Island which destroyed the XA GT Hardtop.
Colin recalls a time at Calder Thunderdome. He was on duty and escorting Jayne Torvill around while Christopher Dean was competing in an Auscar event in a Holden provided by Larry Perkins. Christopher had a high impact crash and was lucky to escape serious injury.
Barry and Colin still see each other regularly and are the best of mates.

Hello Colin. What a great career you've had. I remember you walking around the pits at Calder when I first started drag racing bikes. You always got to know everyone and shared the information with the fans on the P.A. Lovely to see you in this video. A true gentleman of motorsport. Hope you are well. Best Regards, Igor.

I got to know WA because a mate of mine worked with him at Garden Island. Instead of putting a band in the wheel to increase the width we found that 6 inch Humber wheels fitted.

I run a Holden Grey in a HA/GR nostalgia dragster. Wilkinson head, triple 1 3/4" S.U.s, manual 3 speed (HG all synchro) HR open centre diff. I would love to have access to blokes like these for information and machinery but most of the places that knew how to build good Grey motors are gone. Best I've done is 13.5 at WSID. Find videos on RU-vid under spanners94.

Best l ever did was mid 15's...ith the for ute...it had Canadian grey light truck motor punched out to ?160ish.,it had a cross flow head.,cam.,solid lifters.,hot coil.,dick smith electronic ignition pack., holy carb(500?).,sonic exhaust system., celica 5 speed with modified adaptor..Tirana rack n pinion.,rear locker diff...flares to take 12" rims rear 10 front.....cost me heaps n a fiancee to boot. That ute has been owned by a mate for over 35 years n l can't buy it...dammit!

Phil Irving designed a Highpower crossflow head for Repco it was cast iron. Phil wanted it to be cast aluminum but was out voted. RAECO a subsidiary of Repco sold them out of their premises at 10 Queensberry St North Melbourne.

It must be all the pram springs at the back of the car and that oil bath air cleaner sturdy old-fashioned and not relevant now and hardly any of them left. Regards Al. I’m from down under two and I’ve worked on them too.

GMH never made an FX. It was and always will be a 48-215!

Let it go. I've been hearing that for 65 years. Most will still call it an FX

Holden spare parts departments called them "FX" meaning front cross member. The rear springs are also wider, suspension front and rear are the same as a FJ, tube shocks all round.

@@RebeccaGriffin-b8n A mates older brother bought one of these in the early '60's. Sold to him as a '51 model, but we later found out it was more likely a '48 model. It had narrow rear springs, but lots of leaves, no idea how many. Lever action shocks all round, which were part of the upper control arms at the front. Although, his had a telescopic conversion where they just left the front ones in place, and added the telescopic ones to brackets in front of the springs somehow. The rear ones didn't tilt inwards, but were straight up and down, and leaned forward. (Or backwards, can't remember). It also had a crappy aftermarket front swaybar, where one end (or both) kept popping out of the mounts. It had a toggle switch under the tail light housing which turned the light off and on, although it was always left on and he turned it on in the normal manner. Apparently at one time, it was illegal to be able to turn the tail light off from inside the car. The door lock plungers were at the back of the rear doors, not at the front as in later models. Later, another mate bought a '53 model known as the 'Air Ride'. It was still an FX body, but had FJ suspension, i.e. wide, four leaf rear springs, and telescopic shocks all round
