This is the greatest rivalry in the world. How could it not be? They are literally next door, sell the same products, both around over 100 years, started by members of the same family who feuded...how much better can any rivalry ever be than this? Fantastic! Thanks for doing this video!

My wife and I just walked into American coney for the first time to give em a try after this. And I SHIT YOU NOT, there was a guy from Lafayette screaming at the big fella in the video making the dogs.. We were floored to see it first hand right after this! This rivalry truly is hot and legitimate 🔥 !

Took my fam to Detroit before Christmas a couple years back just to help that city- spend money there- we had a GREAT time- will be back. Buddy's, American/Lafayette, Green Stables, Henry Ford Museum- lots to see.

I’m still a Lafayette guy. I lived in the city growing up in my youth, moved downtown in my adult years then moved out the burbs. Still Lafayette all day. Nothing against American. I’ve had theirs too, but Lafayette in my opinion is the shit and the vibes when you eat inside. Rugged.

I live near Detroit and this rivalry is real, I’ve gotten in serious fights over my love for Lafayette

For those who don't know the actual story goes that both brothers started Lafayette first and when they had a falling out the "uncle" started American Coney. Also unbeknownst to the families claims that they started both restaurants in 1917 & 1914 the nephew confirms that 1924 was when the first restaurant opened up but according to food directories Lafayette was the first one to open in 1924 and when the falling out happened American Coney later opened in 1936 so their both kinda lying 😂

25 years of going to detroit for sporting events i've always swayed towards Lafayette. I've have American many times because Lafayette was too busy. I like both but I LOVE the extra Chili and onions on my dog. It's a sloppy mess but hits the spot. that's why they give you a fork.

I’m a Lafeyette guy - Been 25 times to American once - but it’s true ... the shitter down the sketchy ass stairs past the boiler room in Lefeyette is the real deal! After a Red Wing game and 8 Molsons it’s more of a challenge getting there in one piece

As someone who has had both many times, they both use different chili, and different hot dogs, and one uses white onions and one uses yellow onions. They both use different mustards also.

I’ve done both. I lean towards layfette. I still feel like this is a racquet. They are the same, and using the rivalry for business. I feel like the old men work at layfette and their kids work at American. And once the American workers get too old they get moved up lol

Already from the way Lafayette was so laid back and even letting you eat inside, I can say they are better.

Both of these places are solid, but more Detroiters like Lafayette better for sure. However, I personally like the hometown Coneys that you grow up eating at more. Most Detroiters have one of these. The food just tastes better at the ones where you have memories than at the mainstream places.

When I was 10 years old, my uncle took my dad and I to a tigers night game, we sat on the right field side, Rusty Staub was the right fielder and Mark the Bird Fidrych was pitching. It was a perfect summer night game, the stadium was completely full and the Tigers won. After the game, the fans stayed and clapped until the bird came out for a bow. We then went to the coney, not sure which one and I had my first coney dog. I have since been back whenever possible, one time I had 4 coneys. I will never forget the memories.
