Many thanks for this post. This was the first recording of 'Music for Percussion' that I got to know in the mid-sixties, and I still find it one of the most viscerally exciting. It remains a mystery to me why it hasn't ever been released on CD, especially as the second side of the LP, the 'Miraculous Mandarin' suite, has made it onto various Decca reissues, including the Legends and Classic Sounds series.

Seeing this album cover again reminds me that I bought this l.p. back in the 60's but because I was only in my early teens I didn't appreciate the music but it helped with my introduction to 20th c music and my subsequent love of many post-romantic composers. Solti and the L.S.O. made some wonderful recordings and the quality of Decca's engineering was overall better than what they achieved in Chicago in later years.

i read somewhere (another youtube comment on a different video) that this was a big inspiration and influence for the ALIEN soundtrack?

I believe the piece inspired Bernard Herramann in his score for Hitchcock's "Psycho"

Dunno but this track is on Kubrick's Shining.

I'm pretty sure Howard Hanson is the inspiration for the Alien soundtrack, since it includes one of his symphonies.

Bela Bartok was very influential in Jerry Goldsmith's work, if you listen to his sountrack fo the film Freud, you know he's been listening to this.

I've heard great things about this version but it feels rushed in places. Not just too fast - but rushed.

+Andy Baker I believe Solti was a student of Bartok so maybe that's the way the composer intended?
