@@mortgagefinancing5558 there have plenty of videos where a would be victim turned the tables on their attacker using similar techniques. One in particular, I believe happened in Brazil. An individual went into a place to rob people at gunpoint. One of the patrons tossed his phone at the gunman in compliance, then slipped around a display, drew his concealed weapon, and aerated the robber while he was collecting his loot.

Combatants allowed one pocket square (in the colors of their nation's flag, of course) and either curved-end walking stick or umbrella (both combatants using same, in case of dispute, flip for first choice). Points to be awarded on successful strikes, grapples, and throws, as well as style points for lack of muss to the coiffure and mustache/beard (if applicable), composure and lack of wrinkles of the jacket, vest, shirt/blouse, and trousers, and for level of maintenance of shine on the shoes.

Bartitsu, as mentioned in the title, is the gentleman's fighting style. To wit, it is for when one does not expect to be in a street fight, but has, through some series of events, found oneself in such a situation. It is much deeper than this small demonstration as jujitsu is deeper than a roundhouse and chest strike. Lastly, one should never actually use one's pocket square, instead carry an actual handkerchief.

Awesome, most excellent indeed. I found the very first technique so valuable that we will be practicing it today, and adding it to our normal repertoire in the future. The third technique could easily be continued into a shoulder dislocation. Much as the "old man carries fish on his back", a well known chin-na technique from both Shuai Jiao and Tai Chi Ch'uan. Very good of you to continue this most credible fighting art. All the best to you. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association

These guys are going to learn a hard lesson in the street when they try to check someone's hip to keep distance and get met with a right cross/hook over the top. If you're going to push/check somone, push/check high near the bicep so they can't hit you with that arm while you angle off away from the opposite arm so you're out of range and can't be hit by the opposite arm.

It's a demonstration video in which both parties are gentlemen and not seriously trying to kill or maim one another. The techniques shown are more akin to learning "basic punch" and "roundhouse kick" at your local kickboxing club, rather than a takedown or chokehold. If you wanted a sparring match or an outright street fight, there are other videos to watch.

There's too many weaknesses in the style. For one...once you strike the opponent and allowed space to be created between the two of you, it's no longer self defense, its a fight. And self defense and fighting are two different things...most people don't believe so, but it is. And if you can't fight, you WILL get your a** whooped.
@christopherlee7334
@christopherlee7334 6 лет назад
So what I'm hearing is, you'd prefer a more aggressive style in which a possibly noncombative drunkard stumbling towards you ends up in the hospital because rather than checking their movement you automatically assumed they were trying to start something? Like the demonstrator said in the video, his initial push is partly to ascertain intentions, not to start a brawl. If you're into going to jail or court for assault and battery, there's other instructional videos to look at.

Too bad he left out the most important piece: keep your lead hand on the assailant's collar while you relentlessly pummel them with your other hand until they go down.

Good stuff. To me, a martial art is not complete if it's raw technique with no philosophy. Even if it does not have the depths of Buddhist or Taoist thought that comes with Kung Fu, clearly Bartitsu draws upon the simple but important virtues of being a gentleman.

I believe that this art was used in the 1998 film adaptation of the classic show The Avengers, which Ralph Fiennes as Agent John Steed used his umbrella in the same manner as these two gentlemen. I think Sherlock Holmes(literature’s first martial artist)used this art, as well. Great demonstration, gentlemen.

Beautiful stuff. Love martial arts that have an immediate practicality. Too many arts are "flowery" (much modern karate, taekwondo, etc). If you cannot take what you use and make it street-effective, it's not a martial art. This combined with Irish Stick fighting would be quite the formidable mix. (Sigh, wish this stuff was here in the States more prominently, and specifically in Michigan).

1. He is actually close to an old pugilist stance with one foot back and his hands and elbows held close to the body. Look at one of those old boxer's photos or drawings from before boxers started always putting their gloved hands up to protect the face. 2. Even if you are coming hard at him and will not be "distracted" by a handkerchief, it will still blind you for about as log as it takes to throw a punch and will likely cause you to react, providing an opening. Gentlemen also used to carry other accessories like capes and hats that would be more useful than a pocket square. Imagine wanting to get in a fight with someone, but they jammed their stiff, old-fashioned hat in your face. All you need is a fraction of a second to get the upper hand in a street fight. 3. You must have Superman x-ray vision to be able to tell what kind of shape this guy's in under a three piece suit. All that is clear is that he is stocky. You can't tell if that's blubber or muscle under there. It's not like his gut is sticking out. Even if he were out of shape, out of shape people get attacked too. That hardly disqualifies someone from using basic self defense methods.
