As someone who's recently hurt my wrist from boxing, I now totally understand the importance of palm strikes in a street fight.
@markobrien690
@markobrien690 Год назад
Our fists were not made to bang into solid objects. Use your fist on soft targets. Use elbows, knees, palm heels and head butts, but not your knuckles on face and head. The hand is made to hold a club or blade, not to hit bone.
@olivercrespo2329
@olivercrespo2329 Год назад
@@markobrien690lthough I agree that palm strikes are safer bareknuckle. Humans were designed to punch with a closed fist. I don’t subscribe to the theory of we aren’t meant to punch. It’s instinctual. Our bodies wouldn’t be able to generate the kind of force we can if we weren’t designed to execute that kinetic chain. Apes punch and batter their opponents. So do we.

@bertellijustin6376
@bertellijustin6376 Год назад
No part of the human body is really a solid object….hard parts yes, solid object hard, no. .also, the fist evolved BEFORE tool use became common. So no, our fists evolved to form fists not to hold tools, tool usage was a bonus. What I would say instead is, you don’t hit at full speed like you are wearing gloves. If you aren’t this monster of a man, your palm strikes are going to get you hurt just as easily as a regular ol fist. “You hurt your hands with a fist”. Yeah and you hurt the other guys face. And try throwing a palm strike at a guard, tell me how well it does as your fingers touch the back of your wrist. Spoiler I can slip my fist through a front guard way better and much more safely than I can slip a full palm through the same guard. And yeah, I’ll take the extra two to three inches of reach a fist gives me over a palm strike along with the much larger striking surface. If you don’t believe me about the fist thing, go watch little kids, and adults who have never been in a fight…..they instinctually form fists, even if they’ve never thrown a punch in their life. Also look at other primates, fists of all sorts used as weapons. So long story short, if you’re a big man or a very very fast man and you train and condition constantly palm strikes are a useful addition to your tool box…..otherwise you’re infinitely better off using your fists like G-d or evolution designed them to be used.
@bgrl6422
@bgrl6422 5 месяцев назад
@@bertellijustin6376 our hands first evolved to grab tree branches and then they evolved for dexterity, so we could build hunting tools and throw stuff. There's no human who's ancestors have survived because they ko'd a bison with a series of jabs.

Such a strong technique. I studied karate and we practiced a Haito (ridge hand) and Uraken Muashi Uchi (roundhouse backhand) which are very similar. These are devastating and hard to defend because they generate so much power and wrap around defense to hit that sweet spot behind the ear. Hit to the neck, jaw, cheek, temple also can turn the lights out.

Street fighter here. Rutten is 100% correct. I knocked out one guy with a clothline landed on his nose bridge and in another incident another guy with a palm heel strike landed on his chin. In both cases, they oozed out blood. Minimal stamina is spent, unlike punching. From my experience, striking using palm is faster than fist-punching, maybe because it didn't telegraph. Ironically, palm strike is often neglected, and almost never practiced. I only used it instinctively. Perhaps I should really train myself in that skill.

Any tips from you will be greatly appreciated! I refuse to be a victim, consequently most of my reactions are held back until someone grabs me because I can't afford to allow distance between the attacker and me. Also I'm very aware that my reactions have to be immediately disabling or lethal. Thanks 😊 in advance.

Great video, I'll share funny experience, I was fighting a drunk guy in front of a bar, who had harassed my girlfriend and wanted to kick my ass to get with her, he even grabbed her ass, anyways, He pushed me then established a boxing stance, with both elbows protecting his rib cage, I indeed instinctively used an open hand palm strike to the back of his head, over his guard, ignoring his defense, now this was not full strength and did not knock him out at all, it certainly managed to hurt him so much that it made him very angry and confused, so he rushed me running! I simply ducked under, double legged him and next thing you know I smashed him neck first on the ground. Thanks to the palm strike that really broke his pattern, and the fact that he probably never fought a wrestler before really both worked wonders for me in this awful situation.

+North American RU-vidr In that case I would be interested to hear, at least as much as we can understand from his description, what you would have done. The first rule is to try to avoid a fight but there is a time when you have to, and his situation certainly warranted action. Some times not fighting back is what encourages your aggressor to escalate and he needs a pattern interrupt to stop it. I think French Grappling Addict did the right thing by not kicking him after he was down.

Very good video good advice for many people. As a 4th degree BB in Kung Fu San Soo this video was just another confirmation of what I already train in and knew. The striking point behind the ear is a key point for us it can however be fatal if applied too hard and to directly. But when you are on the street it is better to be in court defending yourself than to be dead. Like Bas said no reason to hammer a drunk but if you are going up against say two guys intent on hurting you all bets are off. Again great video! Also Bas desired the way he makes this strike can easily be misunderstood I know what he is saying but maybe a better way of saying it is as follows- At the base of your palm opposite the thumb side is an egg shaped area of your palm, the right lower corner of your right palm and the left lower corner of your left hand/palm this is solid bone and much stronger than your knuckles,

Bas is so laid back. THAT is confidence! The guy is not just an explosive violence monster. He actually considers when and how much violence is required. That also reflects his confidence in himself. Way too many people are like crazy ass, rabid dogs, just waiting to explode on someone....anyone! Or a gun with a hair trigger! All that, comes from fear and LACK of confidence. That and watching too many movies. Anyway, great advice guys. Cheers

Bas, great video, fighting smarter is always good. Sometimes in class we use a Haito, Kokenuchi, or a Koteuchi to deliver a strike to the nerve centers in the neck, or at the pivot point In the jaw bone. I will remember the back of the ear. We use Shotei on a regular basis when striking to the head, as bone on bone can hurt. Keep up the good work!

I've been saying roughly the same thing as Bas for more than a decade now; palm strikes when aiming to the skull, or you might break your hand. Fists are for softer targets; the body, the teeth, the nose, the side of the jaw if you are 100% sure you won't hit the skull instead. His clothesline can hit on the skull and damage your wrist though... he really should be palm striking there to disperse the possible bone-on-bone impact. It wouldn't take much/any power away and it's actually a bit less telegraphed since you can have your arm a bit more bent and still land the shot squarely. I'm surprised he didn't mention how the angle of this attack comes in right through the blind spot of the same-side eye, where the ocular nerves attach to the eyeball. If the target is covering up in a tight guard and their far-side eye can't see your arm, they might not even see your arm coming and just think think you are making a quick stance adjustment. And we all know the shots that hurt are the ones you didn't see. Disguising heavy shots is the secret in fighting. Heavy shots are slow, because they need your full weight behind them like this clothesline. Stepping in with your attack is risky, it commits your movements fully and is easy for an experienced opponent to read. George Foreman's awkward looking punches are a good example. (He hits harder than Mike Tyson btw, by a lot. Mike's talent was in how fast his shots were while still having power, and in setting them up.) When George hit, the opponent got ROCKED. But he missed often because of the way he threw, no power ever sacrificed for the sake of speed. Heavy shots are finishers. You get the opponent off balance a bit, stunned a bit, something. During that moment, you hit them with something that's usually foolish to do, but has your full weight behind it. Fight over, usually. I love this clothesline. It reminds me a lot of a few Aikido moves.

The O2 Trainer seems like a good device; but I'm worried about the idea that it could cure asthma. I'd advise anyone with asthma always to carry their inhaler regardless of whether or not they use the O2 trainer. Asthma could kill you. It's just too dangerous to take risks with. Please err on the side of caution. In Britain there's a similar device called the PowerBreathe, developed by a sports scientist at an English University, and is based on genuine research. I started using one this week.

But comparing that strike to a kick is crazy. One goes almost perfectly horizontal, the other has to be at an angle since your legs are much farther down. And just because it doesnt push the bag as much doesnt mean that the palm strike is more powerful. A lot of times the ones that push more are less powerful since the energy is focused on pushing rather than causing a heavy blow. For example, a gunshot is meant to penetrate, not push the target. If it pushed the target more it would not cause as much damage as if that was focused on penetrating.
@ChucksSEADnDEAD
@ChucksSEADnDEAD 8 лет назад
+DeagleBeagle I agree. An upper body strike can "fake" a lot of bag movement because you can keep exerting pressure even after the swing. A leg strike leaves you with only one foot as support so the bag movement is drawn from impact and not much else - as trying to push the bag can easily make one fall backwards.

Sounds interesting! But Bas strikes are definitely no joke! They made a test with a dummy and measured the force of his strikes and it was off the charts. His strikes are definitely stronger than a normal guys kicks
@dantesapprentice4581
@dantesapprentice4581 5 лет назад
The high roundhouse kick takes more time to throw as well, and is a larger movement, which someone might see coming. Also, you're extremely screwed if your leg gets grabbed or you accidentally slip, which might happen, since the footwear and pants you're wearing on the streets might not be ideal for that much stretch and movement. Obviously, landing on your back is a bad idea against multiple opponents. Hence why the clothesline arm strike is an overall more effective move. Also, the push factor can be useful. If the opponent is disbalanced, you can go in with more strikes.

You're actually agreeing with Bas Ruten I think. It seems to me that he is pointing out that very thing, that although a kick is normally more powerful than an attack that uses arm strength, that the angle weakens the kick to where the arm strike is more powerful. He's saying the arm strike is the higher altitude arm equivalent of a leg sweep, just at a greater height. He's not saying that arm strikes are more powerful than kicks, but rather arm strikes at that height in that direction are better.

Attacking the vital points in the body is known as Atemi in Judo, Aikido , Jujitsu and Ninjutsu. Judo or Karate chops to the points behind the ear are also known as "Rabbit Chops". This and Judo chops to the carotid artery can easily knock out a large strong attacker! Just specialise in hitting these 2 places. This is all a person needs to know for practical street self defence.

Best tip for punching with your fists without hurting or breaking your bones or joints: a fist should be closed like in a boxing glove. That means that the nails wont be showed in your palm so that you cant see them. Instead just close your fingers so that the fingerprints touch the inside-down limits of your palm. You dont need to squeez hard your fingers cause you will get tired and loose speed while hitting. INSTEAD after having your fist closed and relaxed TILT it towards you from your wrist. It will become all of a sudden very heavy and you will feel it like a hammer. Learn to hit using only the knuckles of your index and middle finger and you will do serious damage. Also when using jabs or a right cross throw your hits like they come from your waist then using your shoulders try to throw your hands like a whip motion. The force must come from waist, shoulders and go into the punch. P.S. im noone compared to Bas, and with all the respect i have for him i had to share this cause a lot of famous fighters don't know or don't aknowledge or want to share this basic info. This was basic training when i was young and started amateur boxing. That's the way they teached us back in the days to throw a punch.

When Bas is talking about palm strike to the back of the head behind ear being a KO strike, if you watch Golovikin to a great extent that's when he used to do with his opponents - but with GGG did it with a supinated hand so he could really get the knuckles on the skull behind the ear; as opposed to throwing a normal hook where most of them make all their contact with your thumb and index finger - and as such they don’t transfer and/or can't manage the amount of power being transferred.

How much the bag moves is really not a useful metric but that's definitely a hard strike.
@Quodge
@Quodge 8 лет назад
Why?
@MrMZaccone
@MrMZaccone 8 лет назад
Quodge Why is how much the bag moves not a useful metric? Because I can push slowly on the bag and move it more than any strike ever will. That push is not an effective strike. Now, if you could punch a hole straight through the bag and not move it at all, like a bullet, THAT would be an effective strike. So obviously, by that standard, how much the bag moves is not a useful metric for how hard or effective the strike is.
@Quodge
@Quodge 8 лет назад
But in this context its probubly good though rght?
@MrMZaccone
@MrMZaccone 8 лет назад
Quodge Why would you say that after the explanation I just gave you? NO! If you want to know what a strike is capable of, measure it in pounds per square inch. That and it's tactical advantage, things like how hard is it to block, how easy it is to conceal it etc. tells you everything you need to know. Tactically, I'd say this strike is top notch, especially applied to the right target. Power wise, I'd say it's also probably very good but I'm judging by the sound it made and how it deformed the bag, not how far it moved it.
@Quodge
@Quodge 8 лет назад
I think you took the concept of moving the bag too literally. That's why what you said sounded odd to me. Cos yeah looks like he hammered it doesn't it.. Tactically it seems like a great sucker punch but I dunno if its too telegraphed to work for stand up? Maybe throw it later towards the end of a combo..?

I didn't really hear Bas talking about keeping his vital targets covered while striking like this. If he isn't doing so, he's leaving himself open to counter-punches. For example, a defender making contact with the attacking arm's elbow while countering with a straight punch will be able to move more quickly just based off of simple geometry. This is a movement that would be better used while closing the distance to use grappling maneuvers.
