Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. A massive, open world full of wonder and peril awaits you!
You have crash-landed on alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.
After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.
What happened to this planet? Signs abound that something is not right. What caused you to crash? What is infecting the sea life? Who built the mysterious structures scattered around the ocean? Can you find a way to make it off the planet alive?
The ocean teems with life: Use the ecosystem to help you. Lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators.
Build a Pressure Re-Active Waterproof Nanosuit, or PRAWN Suit, and explore extreme depth and heat. Modify the suit with mining drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, grappling hooks and more.
As the sun goes down, the predators come out. The ocean is unforgiving of those caught unprepared in the darkness. Areas that are safe to explore during the day become treacherous at night, but also reveal a beauty that those who hide from the darkness will never see.
Cave systems wind below the sea bed, from dark claustrophobic passages to caverns lit by bio-luminescent life and burning-hot lava flows. Explore the world below the ocean floor, but watch your oxygen levels, and take care to avoid the threats lurking in the darkness.

I've found tiger plants most useful positioned near a sensor room to prevent stalkers from running off with you camera drones. Captively raised stalkers are a great way to gather scrap metal (just don't release them right next to your base, and mark the spot with a beacon). and for personal defense, raise a few crashfish in captivity, grab a few out of the tank when you're going on a run, and use a propulsion cannon to launch the little shits like 40mm grenades, guaranteed to send reaper, and ghost leviathans packing (yet to test it on a sea dragon, I kinda feel like it's too big to care).

This actually happened in my base I commented about in your other video. While I was installing solar panels, the Reaper came in and tried to attack me outside his patrol area. He never bothers me in the base and he only comes by if a sand shark was swimming by my base, or I was outside it doing construction. *In an Italian Mafia tone* But don't worry......I took care of him. >:-)

I can confirm that Lava Lizards will attack an empty PRAWN suit you leave near your base.

I raised one in a tank and made the mistake of releasing it outside my base... It started going ham on my seamoth that I'd left outside my base. That's how I learned they were immune to damage from my thermoblade. I've yet to return to the area to learn if I can kill a "tamed" lava lizard with my new survival knife. I have no idea if raised creatures are immune to damage from the player, but I sure hope not.

I've watched many different playthroughs of Subnautica by many different people and I think the best thing you can do for 'base defense' is to just play smart. If you know where the hostile leviathans spawn, don't make a base anywhere near their patrol areas. Idk why you'd even want to do such a thing as they all spawn in deeper areas that are majorly out of the way of the Shallows, southern Blood Kelp, and Jellyshroom Caves which have always been sort of the main hubs of my playthroughs until I could get down to the Cove tree to make my main base. The only leviathan that you're kind of forced to interact with is the Sea Dragon and even then, idk why you'd be making a base in either the active or inactive lava zones due to all of the thermal vents that are around the Cove tree which provide more than enough power to sustain a base with an active scanner room and an active water filtration system.

Well... For fun! To prove you can, as an achivement. IGP in one of his videos, built out in the Dead zone, even going as far as to build down to the bottom. Why? He just wanted to. Why do people like horror games? Well it's the adrenaline! The fear that you could die any moment it's... Well... Exiting. Watch IGPs video where he builds down, he's in total fear, it's dark and Ghost Levithans screech at him all the time, but he doesn't give up, because he wanted a challenge.

But bases are more useful in dangerous areas though, as they can serve as a protection if you suddenly encounter a reaper. Sometimes you have reason to go into reaper territory such as fixing the aurora, plus there are a lot of blueprints there. Also gathering resources in general

Jar of Pickles i know I’m late but I’ve found that for a dedicated player, the best way to keep safe is complete and total annihilation, I got tired of being afraid of the Aurora so I made it my mission to eradicate the reapers. Now I have a safe path to access it

4:57 Once I was trying to find the Quarantine Enforcement Platform with my Seamoth. And I ran into a Reaper while I was outside my Seamoth. Then the Reaper grabbed onto my Seamoth and started destroying it, all I could do is watch as it destroyed my Seamoth. R.I.P Seamoth......

Ok I’m a year late but this has happened to me when I was at the back of the ship we was in(I can’t spell it) collecting cyclops fragments when not 1 BUT 2 reapers came to collect my seamoth because I hadn’t paid my daily feeding to them(keep in mind I’m just watching this because I was scanning at the time) and just seaglided my way back to my habitat and ya bet I cheated myself a new seamoth because those 2 reapers were playing ping pong with it.

First time I saw a Reaper I was returning to my Seamoth after grabbing ore. Suudently this great beast came out of nowhere, smashed the Seamoth and left. Being at 350 meter with 23 seconds of oxygen left is a very lonely feeling.

I build there for high efficiency solar and the fact that it's at the center of everything. Why build bases further away from resources than you have to?

I built my main base in the shallows too. Not only for safety, but also enjoy the views of the coral reef. Use a hub/spoke model, with remote outposts all-over. Never too far from a base.

Best base defence = go out in your PRAWN and whack the sh*t out of any bugger that gets too close lol But seriously... if you have a base defence problem, you built your base in the wrong place. Simple as that. Build a base in a quiet area and there will be zero issues. There are plenty of areas even in the middle of "aggressive" areas where a base can be built that is hassle free as creatures don't travel near some areas.

James Kaplonek i built my base at the grand reef. And there is a portal to the seaemperor nearby. The problem is... that between my base and the portal there are 2 ghost levaithans xd. So i got a tamed stalker army and they are currently fighting the ghost levaithans

Matei Duma thanks for the advice. But somehow the stalkers scared the ghost levaithans away lol. I used the same tactic in my 2nd world in my lost river base near the teleport to the seaempror.

You say that it's in the wrong place.... But my best and safest base extended into the Dead Zone. The ghost leviathans only try to knock you back into the play area, so you don't have to worry too much. It's a great last game location, as there are a few areas with a bunch of vents for thermal generators. All you really need is a stasis rifle to freeze them leviathans as you build

Hey! I've been doing some testing of my own recently and it seems as though the tiger plant projectiles have a fall-off range, at which the projectiles disappear and do no damage. This means that you can place tiger plants some distance away from your base and the projectiles will not have the range to reach your base and damage it - quite easy to do via a process of trial & error testing range in each location :)

Don't build a scanner by the stalkers. If you go just outside of their biome (such as the NE mushroom forest/ kelp forest edge) and do the range upgrades there is no need to build a scanner room where stalkers mess with your cameras and annoy you.

I made my base in the grassy plateaus, near the entrance to the jellyshroom caves(the one directly above the 250m Degasi base). Today I realized about 200+ meters away there are not one but TWO reaper leviathans patrolling off the stern of the Aurora, thankfully there is a kelp forest buffer between them and me that they don't seem to venture through.

Dude so interesting I made the mistake of planting tiger plants a long time ago died when I went out to my garden lol. I usually like to build under the degassi island! Around 70meters down. Great natural lighting with the ancient floaters and easy solar plus the grand reef is right below me. Hardly any fish and no predators up there either. I catch some Reginald and other safe shallows fish and breed them and release them around my base too for that nice safe shallows feel! Thanks for the video man love the channel

Yeah, leviathans will not attack your base at all, and they will not attack your cyclops if you're not in it. They will attack the PRAWN and seamoth regardless of whether or not you're inside tho.

I know this is old, but it's incredibly easy to kill reapers with gasopod gas, it takes about 20 full gas explosions to KO them for good. And I could've sworn they dont attack gasopods.

Even killing a Sea Dragon Leviathan doesn't take more than a few minutes with the PRAWN suit. All these creatures are only scary as long as you try to hide from them. And none of the Leviathans inside the crater will respawn, contrary to the Leviathans in the void. So if you kill them once, they're gone.

I've tried a number of different things and ultimately found the mechanics for the base are just too underdeveloped to do anything other than goof around. A couple beds of tiger plants will also kill a warper stone dead if it appears right over them.

I don't know why they don't just add bio-armor! Boneshark armor for the seamoth, & Leviathan armor for the sub(forgot the name), even give it the appearance of a Leviathan! A bumper that looks like it's mandibles, & maneuvering fins that look like a Leviathan's fins! The boneshark armor would give much greater durability & damage resistance, & an intimidating appearance much like the boneshark! Possibly even better energy efficiency while driving around! The Leviathan armor, would give increased 'life' for the sub, along with damage resistance! Plus, bonuses with energy efficiency modules, & a definite increase maneuvering of the sub!

So helpful man. I just started about a week ago and barely have the Sea moth. Took me days to figure out you need the habitat builder to start a base. Now it's time to make a nice ass base. Only problem is I can't find the main MP room blueprint.

Good video! What i usually do to defend my base is to raise gasopods, take their gaspods, stasis any attacker, then then in a metaphorical gas chamber by using the gaspods. Always works!

There is one point in the game where basedef can be a good thing, when I am in the inactive lava zone i like to build a base at the outer rim where i park my cyclops while walking around in my suit. When you breed as many lava lizard eggs as you can, they will stay at the base and they hunt lava larvae and this will keep your cyclops powered and free of that pests (thermo generator will find enough heat to keep the rest up). Shure, you can remove the cells but thats a hassle and when you want to move the ship you have to set everything up again while removing the larvae. having a save bubble is just comfort.

Biggest threats to my bases in my experience: gasopods getting stuck under foundations. I’ve had to chase off more than a few who were confused by my bases presence and just started wigging out

I had an Ampeel get stuck under my Moonpool, which ended up dealing some pretty massive damage to said Moonpool. Really would like to avoid that in the future, though it sounds like its fairly uncommon

I once built a base in what was formerly the patrol path of the Sea Dragon Leviathan in the Inactive Lava Zone. My base was on one side of the Lava Castle and I placed a Creature Decoy on the other side. After that, the Sea Dragon Leviathan left my base alone and I was free to build it up as much as I wanted in peace.

I like to build my bases near leviathan patrols mainly for the interesting view. My latest base is built next to the teleporter near the Cove Tree and I can watch the Ghost Leviathan charge the River Prowlers from the safety of my greenhouse chair, while I sip coffee. It also makes building the base a bit more... interesting.

OH cool, they patched that, last time I used tiger plants for base defense they would only shoot at me. (mainly to defend camera drones from stalkers.) Also, you didn't try out crabsquid.

I use my Cyclops as a base mainly park it at lifepod 17 and I have max depth decoys Shield defense fire suppression and I'm a decent driver and if I turn off the engine no creatures come at you so I'm saying I don't know why I'm so scared

I have reefbacks close to my base and sometimes bash and get stuck around thew base, I was thinking something similar but building free standing pillars ( not connected to any other part of the base ) of multipurpose rooms around the base or even just a free standing corridor or t-piece , with connecting tubes reaching upwards as a physical barrier

Hey the Tiger Plants sound like a great idea for Base Defense! But whet if we were to put the Growbed on top of a Multi Purpose room so they can hit the base? Or maybe set up platforms that rise a bit higher than your base so the Tiger Plants can't hurt your base? Thanks for this Video! I liked and Subbed! :)

Based on my tests so far, if you are not in line of sight on the Tiger Plants then they do not fire at you. So placing a growbed on top of a Multipurpose Room should work but I expect there would be a risk of the Tiger Plants firing downward at you as you approach the base if you are not at the right angle. Then they would potentially hit the Multipurpose Room and deal damage.

That would increase Hull Integrity and thus be much more resistant to leaking into the base but however will still leave Tears in the Hull that will also need to be repaired sometime, otherwise... Flooding! Another Suggestion, if we were able to set up a Moonpool for our little Tiger plants to watch for us on top of it so we can get in our Seamoth/Prawn suit safely (Or safer) without any Hostile Creatures wanting to attack us so much? But hey, your the RU-vidr here and you can test these out and post em whenever you want, ill be here to watch them ;)

@@enigmabound2843 make a dummy structure that is sealed off with bulk doors and put the plant there, no need to worry about leakings or fixing this way since the bulk doors wont let the water invade the real rooms

If you build were Reefbacks swim and build a base where the directly pass they WILL damage your base, Happen to me, I don't think its the Reefback itself but all the stuff on its back.

I believe you are right about that because I remember at one point the Reefbacks were implemented in a way that made them not count as a "contact" object but the plants and such on their backs would of course still function normally.

Thank you I had a upper part of my base in a swim path of a reefback and I just got the prwan and drilll arm and went for mag ore, after farming in the mountains for what seemed about an hour, went back to base with my 3 sets of power cells (last set nearly dead 12%) and see my base and I cant docked in my 1st moonpool, then I get out and see everything flooded, I check the entire base which has a few useless rooms so its sizable, then I hear the leaks around the alien containment tanks stacked 3 high, right were a reefback would pass slightly over and sometimes right over on point center of the multipurpose room. I could only conclude that it had to be him, I never run into my base with anything you drive (cept the Seaglide) I had to go to the upper and mid highest rooms and repair the leaks and all was done took about a minute to drain the water. but yea I agree with you, and we see even with 1.0 Reefbacks do flips and swim under land till they disappear. But not sure if they can since I mean we know Reapers, and Ghost Levs can pass right threw it and nothing. but all that contact stuff on the back of Reefbacks? I think thats it. I never rebuilt the base to have to deal with the flooding issue, was refitted and moved to another part of the base which nothing swam there not even fish.

That may not be true anymore. A Reefback booped my base's moon pool and changed direction without causing any damage.

I've found that the best base defense is to build in one of the safe biomes, although I can understand wanting to build in the lost river and one of it's entrances, but as was said in this video, thats completely inneffective against leviathans. If you're building in the creepvine forest, I would reccomend the tiger plant defense for your scanner room.

No defense needed grab a stasis rifle, a thermoblade and about 5-10 medkits after this you can serve some delicious reaper leviathan

What about using inedible, non-aggressive ray creatures? For example, what if I tame a bunch of ghostrays or rabbitrays or such and I put them outside of my base. They wouldn't be edible, so they're not getting attacked, yet they crowd the place, so maybe this causes predators to stay further away to prevent crowding?

jelly rays are decent sized. much bigger than rabbit rays. plus, they are attracted to lights, so likely will stick very close to your base. I have yet to see a predator eat one, so they might just ignore them.

Not attacking per se, but I did have a stalker that had a bad habit of stealing the camera drones from my scanner room, taking them back to its nest, and using them as chew toys. A domesticated gasopod quickly put a stop to that.

In Below Zero those bloody eye-jellies wrecked my base as they swim towards the player constantly, even when she’s inside a vehicle or base. They do contact damage so soon cause your base to spring leaks.

I've actually found a situation where I need base defense, which I'm going to try setting up tomorrow. Wild ampeels glitch into my alien containments and moonpools, killing animals inside and damaging my Seamoth and/or Prawnsuit. They aren't actively attacking, rather they're getting stuck inside and their perimeter electricity is doing the damage, I'm hoping I can use tiger plants around my base to drive them off and just keep them out of range.

this to me is the biggest flaw of subnautica, the forced pacifism. i'm a player who enjoys taking the no kill route if there is a choice, but having it forced on me is annoying. you have no way of defending against those things despite being able to pull a submarine out of your ass and that, to me, is shoddy design. Also, what about making a layer of foundation ABOVE your base and putting the tiger plants on those?

As long as the tiger plants do not have line of sight on you (surprising since they don't seem to have eyes), they shouldn't be trying to attack you. Since the foundation doesn't leak, it should work but I think you may find it a bit troublesome to get it to actually place above your existing base since it will render the legs downward and into your base if it will place at all.
