Giants move to San Francisco, MLB, Baseball, San Francisco, New York Giants, Dodgers, Willie Mayes, cheers, fans, parade
On April 17, 1958 this video was released detailing San Francisco's move from Brooklyn. Initially the San Francisco Giants were the New York Giants, but in 1958 the team headed west to form the team we know today. They were greeted in San Francisco by a parade and thousands of screaming soon to be fans. In their first game the Giants play the Dodgers and win the game 8-0.

I was 10 years old when the Giants moved to the City. My dad took me to Seals Stadium in 58 and was flying high- Will always love the Giants.

For a New Yorker, it's sort of like when a beloved family member moves to a different state. For a Californian, it's more like tracing your ancestry.

The teams that LA and San Francisco are enjoying today are New York-based. No matter how you cut it to your roots will always be New York at Gotham city.

Manny Skouloudis 100% correct. Their name, their colors, their greatest franchise moments and the amount of time they played in NY. The only thing that identifies them as California is the city name, that's it, everything else they took from NY. Fuck California

Giants and Dodgers don’t have their own identity, they are still New York and Brooklyn in every way except the city they play in. Remember that.

I disagree completely. The last vestige of the old days was removed when the Dodgers moved their spring training to Arizona. Their Florida home had walkways named after all the great Brooklyn players. But they left all that behind. It's just their roots now. Besides, they both have great stadiums in LA and SF and have both won the World Series as representatives of LA and SF. They are true West Coast teams now. Besides, we have the Mets in NY since 1962. All that being said, both teams are part of New York Baseball lore but now have made plenty of great history out west also.

The Yankees are from Baltimore originally they were the original baltimore orioles so technically the Mets Dodgers and Giants are the only true NY teams

If the Dodgers had gotten their new ballpark to replace Ebbets Field, would the Giants still have moved?
@disneyfan8178
@disneyfan8178 4 года назад
Yes, they were initially planning to move to Minneapolis (where they had their top farm team), but when the Dodgers decided to move to Los Angeles, the National League would only let them if another team moved to the West Coast, in order to ease traveling issues.
@oceanthresher6184
@oceanthresher6184 3 года назад
I think when the NL voted to approve their moves, they had to do so together, so the Giants may have been forced to stay too.
@kevinmiller6324
@kevinmiller6324 3 года назад
@@disneyfan8178 But yet the Los Angeles Angels came into existence in 1961, so they were the only (American League) team on the West Coast. That sure didn't ease any travel issues.

The Giants weren't drawing well any more so they were contemplating a move for a few years. The Dodgers in contrast were drawing well.
@jimmym2486

No While it is true both teams had to move together to California.I do not believe applied to the Giants move to Minnesota. That would have made things interesting. My dad would not support the Yanks but he also hated the Dodgers but would he have supported the Dodgers as the only NL team and would I be a Dodgers fan since I am a Mets fan because of him and finally by now do you think a World Series between the Minnesota Giants and the Los Angeles Senators would have happened by now?

What stadium is this? Doesn't look like Candlestick, yet it looks to me too big for a PCL venue, but it has to be Seals Stadium, I suppose. Kassar it ain't. Imagine if the Giants had remained in that area, torn down the stadium and built a more modern MLB facility right there. Demolish it the day after the final game of the season, try to have something workable by opening day, with planning and luck it could have been pulled off, then keep on refining and building during road trips and of course, the offseason. It would have taken several seasons, but the abomination in South San Francisco would have been avoided.

@@trevorhembrough1290 Seals didn't seat many people, but then again, it was a minor league park anyway, home of the Seals, and (temporary) home of the Giants until Candlestick Park opened in 1960.

David Gothard the Dodgers and Giants played in New York for 74 years, that is longer than the 50+ they have played in California. They don't have their own identity, they are still NY is everything but the cities name. The name of the teams are NY especially the Dodgers which identifies not just as NY, but as specifically Brooklyn where fans had to "Dodge" the trolley cars to get around the town. Their colors were created in NY, their greatest franchise moments happened in NY (Jackie Robinson and Bobby Thompson). So you need to get it straight.

The stewardship of Robert Moses was horrifying, which he turned into a capricious overlording instead. The city loses one team? A freak occurrence. The city loses TWO teams at the exact same time? That right there tells you something was very, very wrong. Remember that the Giants were already outtahere and had one foot in Minneapolis, O'Malley just pushed them to keep going further west.

@@kevinmiller1985 The Dodgers new ballpark was to have been located across the street from where Barclays Center now stands. The Giants probably would've gone to Flushing, unless the Dodgers claimed Queens as their territory.
