Basenji Dogs 101 | Are they good pets?
Do you want to know which dog originated in ancient Egypt? The so-called "barkless" African dog. A dog who is full of life and has a lot of mischievous potential. Let us now learn more about this friendly dog with a lot of potential. The Basenji is an African breed with origins in the Congo. The dog was then further developed as a highly skilled hunter dog in Central Africa. As a result, it is also known as the congo dog. In the early twentieth century, the Basenji was introduced to Europe and the United States. In 1943, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Basenji.
Appearance.
The Basenji has a graceful and elegant appearance. He has a smooth coat that comes in red, black brindle, or tricolor (black and red) variations. These majestic dogs have white feet, chest, and tail tips, as well as white legs in some cases. The Basenji is a small dog with short hair. They have long, curled tails and are poised, alert dogs with a balanced structure and smooth musculature that allows them to move quickly.
Grooming.
While the Basenji is a dog, it grooms itself in a cat-like manner and keeps itself very clean. As a result, this dog should only need to be bathed every few months. Because their hair is so short and fine, the Basenji sheds very little. Because of genetics and other environmental factors, some Basenjis have thicker coats, especially if they live in areas with harsh winters or spend a lot of time outside.
Barking.
The Basenji is also known as the African Barkless Dog because it does not bark, but it can make a lot of noise, including Yodels, whines, and even screams.
Temperament and character.
And because Basenjis are known for their pigheadedness, forcing them to overcome their stubbornness can lead to confusion and aggressive behavior. Furthermore, they are obstinate, and the Basenji is extremely intelligent.
Agility and Exercise.
The balanced structure and smooth musculature of the Basenji allow the breed to move with ease and agility, so it's no surprise that they excel in agility competitions. The Basenji is a high-energy, inquisitive, and active breed. These dogs do require a lot of daily exercise to keep them from becoming bored. A bored Basenji is a destructive Basenji, and you don't want to come home to a mess. Long play sessions in a well-fenced yard are recommended, and when out in public, keep them on a leash.
Training Ability.
Yes, the Basenji must channel their energy in the most effective way possible. As a result, it is advised that you enroll them in early socialization and puppy training classes. This is due to their high levels of energy, intelligence, and proclivity for misbehaving. It is difficult to train this dog because it behaves like a cat.
Family-friendly.
Aside from that, Basenjis are extremely affectionate toward their family, children, and strangers. They get along well with other canines. They're fierce protectors of their families, as well as quiet and friendly to their owners, strangers, and other dogs. They are excellent companions for children because they interact and play with them gently and do not perceive them as a threat.
Living in an apartment.
The Basenji is an excellent apartment pet. They don't shed much, rarely reach 18 inches in height, and are the only dog that doesn't bark. As a result, they're ideal for people who live in small apartments.
Separation Anxiety.
The Basenji can get mischievous if you allow them to get bored. They don't tend to get separation anxiety and these dogs can be possibly left alone for several days if necessary due to their high intelligence.
Health Problems.
When it comes to health problems, the Basenji can be affected by a variety of diseases. Although Basenjis are generally healthy dogs, they are susceptible to eye problems and other illnesses.

Don't try to move them or pick them up when they're sleepy or you'll have a very angry basenji!
