So excited to see the following reviews. I would love to hear your thoughts on UPS use case on powerbanks, pass though charging feature/recovery and also the quite cool Anker fusion models. It would be nice if somehow someway some manufacturers would be able to combine all those features into one.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, I was hopeful for this one to have the UPS function hidden away and when I first unplugged the power adapter it didn't reset but then it dashed my hopes mere seconds later when it renegotiated the power delivery. It isn't advertising anything like that though. Either way, still seems like a decent power bank.

I got the 65W version of this model some weeks ago in a Baseus summer sale (for 45eur)(together with their 100W GaN charger after watching your channel) and love it. It has a built-in usb-c cable and charges my 65W laptop (and all other devices) perfectly. Also, the scrollable info on the screen is so handy. I had some old cables and when testing them out with this powerbank I was able to see that some were very old/slow at charging while others were fast.

Finally thanks man, have been waiting on your review series for powerbanks. Also I appreciate when someone takes me to school, the info on power units makes sense, I just didn't use them anymore since engineering studies so I was a bit rusty. I think marketing guys are still using the mAh since most powerbanks earlier were delivering fixed voltage output, they didn't change that when technology upgraded, fearing that the dumb customers would not understand and under value their products (20K sounds mighty), so mAh is like a tradition now more than sensible value. Keep up the good work 👏👍💪
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Someone else commented on how the mAh isn't the worst thing marketers do, which is true. There is some basis to the number but assuming constant voltage, etc. Probably the most valuable data in the review is how much energy you can get out of the power bank it will be interesting to compare delivered energy from the various options out there.

A correction. At the 1:23 mark, it clearly list compatibility with "Surface Pro / 7,". This is probably a few years old design/product as we now have Surface 9; the Surface 7-9 require 60w, and the models below that require 39watt or lower. In the "Note" section, it list "surface Go laptop" as being incompatible. I don't know why it would not be compatible as Surface Go laptops consumes 39watts (15v 2.6a). Anyway, thank you for your thorough reviews, excellent work. I cannot find anyone on YT doing the correct technical testing and analysis as you have. Through your videos, I have decided to purchase this as it was about US$50, making the value proposition really awesome. Will be using it with a Surface Pro. If it really doesn't work with the Surface Pros, I'll report back. (edit: it works on SP 5 and Surface Book 2 dual core.)

Hey man great stuff, really glad you're putting the information out there for those that don't know and yeah there are a lot of people who are clueless about this sort of stuff. I can say that because I admittedly kinda was myself and didn't think too much about all these other factors. I would love see more portable versions like around the size of modern smart phones because I feel like that would be most people's preference. It would also help a lot for me because I am a food courier and am in desperate need for an upgrade. Just some insight so you could make more videos that could probably seen by more people who are interested because anyone can just search up "Best powerbank" and probably get some mediocre one and not know about it yk what I mean? The community needs your help and expertise so keep going at it man! Also as a suggestion I recommend you work on capturing the audiences attention, yes I understand this is a informative video but I would find myself just trying to keep myself watching and losing attention it wouldn't hurt to have more liveliness brought maybe some background music. But yeah that's all, your work has tremendous value for this community
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
I agree on the video side, I slowly make improvements, music isn't bad sometimes especially if you turn it on and off so the background changes but yeah, one step at a time. It is a struggle to get one video out a week and work full time so sometimes it's an hour before live and I'm still finishing the video. Speaking of that 27 hours to next video, I have a script and nothing else. Anyway, yeah, I have a bunch of power banks here in that mid-size range and need to start testing more of them. I have data on the mini sized Anker 5000 mAh charger with the built in power adapter but haven't made a video yet. Thanks for the feedback, it is important to help the channel grow! Hey buddy, nice videos, they are helping me a lot choosing some gear Here is the thing, at the moment I have a Baseus power bank 65w, but it seems not very trustworthy, sometimes it dischargers in 10min. So the question is, these Chinese brands such as Ugreen and Baseus are worth the cash, or should I justspend 3 times the price and get some more reputable brand such as Anker? Thanks
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, I know what you mean on the quality, I think this thing over reports the depth of charge when it isn't used for a while. I mention that in some of my videos on these products too. It is a little buyer beware and there is certainly some risk with a smaller manufacturer because mean time before failure analysis by Anker is going to be more thorough versus Baseus. If 1 in 100 units fails in the field for Baseus versus 1 in 1000 for Anker that is a big deal and the long term product reviews are going to show this. I am obviously a tinkerer so I don't care if things go a little sideways, it just means I get to fix something but if you need reliability better pay more for something that will last.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 11 месяцев назад
It really depends on the power usage of the machine. So, if it really uses 65W, then it's the capacity in watt hours divided by the watts used which will leave you with hours. For example, 65Wh / 65W = 1 hour If you are just idling or doing less intense tasks for the majority of the time the battery should last much longer than that.

Hmm. Probably limit the charge range. So, use it from 20-80% capacity and store the battery around 40% capacity instead of 100% if you aren’t using it for awhile. A battery this size at the full 65w charge rate isn’t stressing the battery. Less than 1C charge rate so charge speed isn’t an issue. The electronics got warm when using it to the full potential but the battery itself barely warmed up at all.

Hi, thanks for the review, I heard someone say that since it uses li po battery cells, it won't last anywhere as long as traditional li-ion cells. What is your opinion on this?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 9 месяцев назад
Yeah, it uses pouch cells for sure, you can see them in the thermal camera images. The cells actually have some advantages, like more charge/discharge current capability. At 100W they are pushing the battery pretty hard though so regardless of technology, abusing the battery shortens the life. It charges at 65W for a reason... but yeah, these power banks that push the limits of the batteries probably won't last as long as a slower charging/discharging pack.

I had the thermal camera shots in the footage, I completely spaced on saying anything about that though. The thermals were VERY stable on this power bank. The top corner (display area) will get hot (50 degrees C or so) depending on which side is doing the charging or discharging but the battery itself stayed cool during full load charge and discharge testing!

Hi. I’m having a problem with my power bank that when it gets low and I’m plugged in my iPad, the powerbank restarts and starts to be charged by the iPad not the other way around. Do you why this happens?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 10 месяцев назад
Ah, yeah, the reverse charging problem. USB is not THAT smart so it'll deliver power in either direction it doesn't really know what is correct so, on that reset the power bank sees a power source and says okay gimme. It is almost like they need a button to force power delivery mode not charging mode also.

I have this powerbank. Primary use is working as an off grid power supply for my MacBook Pro 14 M1 Pro (10CPU/16GPU), 16GB/1TB. If nothing is connected to the computer (especially if Power Save mode is selected), I can work most of the day on and of (even editing the odd video on DaVinci Resolve Studio), without tapping into the internal “juice”. Connecting Thunderbolt SSD's tends to suck a lot more power, but still manageable (especially, with more than one pwerbank at hand to quickly switch to). I have experienced one thing, I’d suggest you look into. When this critter and/or the Sandberg 420-57 are connected to my Satechi 165W GaaN charger, they always start flashing wildly. That happens whether they were connected, when power was turned on for the charger, or whether they were connected, after the charger was turned on (USB-C testers - 3 different versions - show no activity either, but their display also flickers wildly in sync). Other “consumers” are not affected. My Satechi 75W (bought just after introduction on the market), Apple 60W (2019) or Apple 97W (2022) have no problem charging any of the two modern powerbanks. An Old RAVpower 60W (30W charge/60 W delivery) does not show this problem on the Satechi 165W GaaN charger either. All powerbanks are charged on an USB-C port that is also usable for “juice” delivery, but this is not necessarily the actual culprit (since the RAVpower powerbank has only one USB-A port and the shared USB-C port for 30W charging and up to 60W PD, that is also delivered, when requested). I have a cabling to an old 2018 MacBook Pro 13 (Intel, 4 Thunderbolt), that emulates the MagSafe system. Works perfectly, but when I disconnect or connect the “MagSafe emulating” part (magnetically) from the cable connector, it seems to solve the problem most of the time. It’s as if a Power Delivery renegotiation is forced on all Satechi 165W outputs, also involving the modern powerbanks (when connected). The charger and the two powerbanks seem incapable of doing the initial “PD negotiation” by themselves. Have tried loooots of cables, that do not pose any problems in any combination up to 20V/5A, not involving the Satechi 165W and one or both of these powerbanks. It may be, that the powerbank manufacturers use the same firmware code for PD, or the Satechi 165W GaaN is sensitive to some negotiation approaches - whatever. I think, that you need to check the modern “heavily computerized” GaaN chargers and powerbanks compatibility with each other in day to day use. My typical powerbank (but not only) use case is charging at night (AC power down to 20-50% of daytime peak price per kWh adjusted hourly), where a Philips Hue Smart Plug handles the activation at preset times (start varies from 23PM to around 02AM in shorter periods). The Smart Plug does not affect things. Manually repeating connection processes does not exhibit any discernibly difference. By accident I at one time had my iPhonePro 12 (not connected to anything except wireless) near the Baseus, when activating the Smart Plug over Bluetooth, and the iPhone screen started flashing (didn’t notice if it was in sync with the powerbank - mostly due to shock). It was not reproducible, and I wasn’t too keen on repeating the experience until results were seen, since I had no way to measure, what actually was going on. There seems to be some possible wireless near field interference at play also. I’m not blaming any of the manufacturers, but it sure seems like “computer infighting amongst system controllers” from the outside. Worth looking into? Regards P.S. Love your approach. Clear, to the point, and fact based. What else could one wish for.

Hello, thanks for the detailed comment. Yeah, that is something that happens in electronics. Some device is bound to not work with some other device and often it is very difficult to reproduce. The exact method that is happening here is very unusual. I haven't looked at the 165W Satechi yet, there have been a few requests but I haven't had a chance to get that yet. I do have the power bank though so this is a great thing to test once I have both. The Baseus does have some EMI emission, I noticed with a very short USB C cable it interferes with bluetooth but with the supplied cable it is fine. The one solution I can think of is port selection on the Satechi. Only one port delivers the maximum power level. So, just a dumb thing to try (and you probably already did this) is to use a different port on the Satechi. I surprisingly haven't found many power adapters that behave poorly. The dual port 35W Spigen is the only one I can think of that was absolutely awful. Doesn't even get to 35W. Anyway, yeah, I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of plugging into lots of devices saying yes it plugs into this and works, which is essentially a lot of what the other reviews of products cover. I do everything related to it being a power supply, everyone else covers the device side. Just like the power adapters themselves, there is no perfect review video. I think there is value in testing with devices but I don't have the means to get all the devices yet. So, eventually I want to add this.
@winnegehetoch
@winnegehetoch Год назад
@@AllThingsOnePlace Now, imagine Baseus going completely ape, blinking display showing 188 88 8.8 or blank in a frantic orgy of light. That at least makes heavy near field interference plausible. I have two now, and both behave similarly. Either both are defective, or... but then the Sandberg flashing behaviour still needs some explaining. The Satechi actually seems robust enough. I had metered charging on other consumers, and that seemed completely stable and plausible, while at the same time one or two connected powerbank behaved weirdly flashing all indicator lights wildly (as the display lights in the USB-C meters did, without any content displayed) That’s why I suggest, that you at least make a simple “compatibility test” (Like Sir Clive Sinclair was said to perform at the end of his computer assembly line: If connected to power, and no fumes were sighted, the QC was done and OK ;-) In this case, if you observe instabilities, you at least have the instruments to help discover a cause. The Satechi officially allows: 100W, 100W + 60W, 100 W+ 30W +30W, 60W + 60W + 45W, 60W + 45W + 30W + 30W (max 165W combined). Port assignment is not defined, but I tested things like 60W Macbook, 60W powerbank, 60W+60W two powerbanks and 60W+60W+30W three powerbanks (the 30W was charged amiably, while the two other devices flashed their displays wildly). Virtually any combination of devices worked, except the two powerbanks described. Modern powerbanks supporting anything known to man (maybe except boiling eggs), as is also the case with Satechi may lead to "infighting", if negotiation algorithms conflict. Maybe, just maybe, it is good to always add a minimal reality check, when testing chargers. A few seconds connected to the Baseus will definitely show, if anything goes totally haywire (my Sandberg powerbank has a more limited display, but that also flashes wildly). No chance of NOT noticing. The first time, you see that, it's quite scary ;-) Thanks for taking your time to answer. Have fun and regards.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I know that. But - at least in the official specs - any port can deliver 100 W etc. That’s not important. You have the Baseus. Have you checked it’s use against some of the GaN chargers, you have Lyongade around in your lab? You don’t have to publish “no problems”, since that is still not guaranteed. But if it turns out, that one or more chargers - from Satechi or not - display a similar flash problem, that is proof of its existence. If the flashing also turns up on other (modern) powerbanks, there is a tendency. THEN you decide, what to do. Closing your eyes doesn’t help you either, if users as time goes by experience a tendency towards the same behaviour, on moder power banks connected to modern chargers. OK. You make your own decisions. I respect that (have to 😇) Regards P.S. Yeah, as of now, you have to cob together several pieces if you want to guarantee it will work (DC-AC Inverter (pure sine), AC-DC adapter charging a portable power bank (check run times against power usage and system losses), Another DC-AC (pure sine inverter could be in the power bank), then a normal AC UPS, then finally your device running with its supplied power adapter) or make it yourself (DC-DC, battery charger/battery/management, DC-DC and some connectors). Any of the current generation products I have seen stop charging to supply power or vice versa whenever anything changes on the USB ports, the camera should be smart enough to reconnect on momentary power loss though if you can accept a few minutes of down time whenever a power condition changes.

They recommend charging every few months (not necessarily to 100% charged but at least some charge). They all have a slow self discharge. I have seen some that have a long term storage mode that shuts down more of the electronics. It shouldn't drain the cell to zero so that is unusual behavior. The balancing circuit did not work correctly, maybe only top balancing, and the cutout is only on total voltage? I have left a cable plugged in and the power bank stayed active enough to drain the battery to zero but it still took charge. In terms of safety, it would certainly shorten the life of the battery taking it to zero voltage on a cell. Keeping an eye on battery cell swelling is important. Maybe keep it in a safer place in the meantime (concrete pad, metal box). 8 months should be within the warranty period though so I'd try to get a replacement that way?

@@AllThingsOnePlace No, they refuse warranty. But gave me a partial refund of $28. When I measured the cells, only 1 cell is completely drained. The other cells were all normal(over 3.8v? I don't recall exactly). But I guess some protection kicked in and I had to directly charge the dead cell to revive it. It was really strange. Ever since then I used it a few times and it was able to charge laptop at 65w and no self-drain over time so far so there is no short circuit inside it.

The included cable is a USB C-C cable so that wouldn't charge an iphone. Anyway, that rate is typical for a mid-state of charge on an iphone, they taper the power down pretty fast. The phone, ipad, macbook pro (assuming an M1 model with a mostly charged battery), probably would use about the watts you have stated as a steady power draw. With all three, the USB ports power levels drop, the USB A ports will be 5V only. It doesn't sound too out of line. You can check the power bank isn't getting too hot and cables connectors are cool to the touch. It doesn't sound like it isn't working if it is delivering power to those devices, it is likely the devices are deciding how much power they can draw from the power bank as they negotiate for power.

I find the "marketing speak" mAh are just always at an assumed 3.7V. So while it isn't factually accurate, I wouldn't agree that it's "total nonsense." It does give a good indication of capacity; just multiple by 0.0037 to get Wh. It's just semantics of series vs parallel in many cases. With this 20,000mAh pack, it's exactly that. It would perform essentially the same as any other pack rated at "20,000mAh marketing speak," regardless of the internal cell configuration. However, yes, obviously a measure of actual energy (Wh) would be the correct unit of measure and correct dimension. This probably originates from the first few designs of USB power banks, where manufacturers kept wanting to add capacity without adding multiple-cell balancing complexities to the PCB. So they just put more and more 3.7V cells in parallel. In that case, the mAh increase was factually accurate. Then Li-ion balancing chips became cheap and easy, and people wanted higher voltage fast charging, so they started rearranging the same cells with the same capacity in series instead of parallel. Since they started with mAh rating, it would have been more confusing to the dumb consumer for a fast-charge capable pack to have 1/4 the mAh rating. Ideally, they would have rated them in Wh to begin with, but that's history now. You see the same thing with all kinds of "marketing speak" across many industries, and I think the mAh rating is actually one of the least-egregious examples, since it is based on a 3.7V-parallel truth.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
I don’t disagree with your analysis but the fact that batteries don’t just have a voltage means the number is an estimate so then the true capacity is also an estimate. Explaining integrals was certainly beyond the scope of the video but from a science perspective the error is not insignificant. We assume chemistry and voltage stay constant then we can get the correct answer. In the case of this baseus adapter they list three different answers on the same product! I measured roughly 16,500 mAh for a capacity for this pack assuming 3.7v constant but that’s with converter losses. That’s a whole other issue, 75% efficient converters and this thing would be a red fire brick! So, someone’s lying. Fact is thing thing probably has 4 x 4,500 mAh cells. And they rounded up to 5,000 then multiplied that number by 4… if everyone is doing that the 30,000 mah cells may be within the airline limits but since no one actually measures correctly. Just list the real Wh is my point. In either case yes I have to state the mAh as the product headline since that is how they are being marketing. I’ll be nicer in the next one. :)
@ewicky
@ewicky Год назад
@@AllThingsOnePlace agreed. Integrating the voltage x current over time to get true Wh is beyond the scope, but then again, a Wh is not really the same as another Wh because of internal resistance and the Li-ion equivalent to Peukert's law. And that's also probably beyond scope. There's so many variables; nothing can be simple haha. However, if you're looking for video ideas, you could totally make one that explains mAh marketing speak, series vs parallel construction, etc.

@@ewicky Hah, yeah. That is true. That is hopefully where some of the engineering design for these packs keeps that series resistance low enough to not be the dominate consumer. In this case the 100W is probably pushing it for the battery size but it does manage to make it happen. I don't want to destroy the pack but the details of the individual batteries would be interesting. In the end the product is like a black box, the test gear can tell us how the box does but not what is in the box. Yeah, I have another one of these Baseus packs with more detail on it and I can explain that a bit more. I feel like I should throw in a little technical bit for the series resistance, keep it simple "more you draw less you get".

I'm not sure. I looked all through the Microsoft page and they tell you absolutely nothing about how it charges, what technology it uses, or what port charges it. Lots of specifications that don't mean anything though. So, to heir on the side of caution, no this won't work neither will any power bank.

Hi Sir, Why my Baseus 100W power bank showing me when I am using USB A to charge my TicWatch 4.9V 0.1A and 51h 7M to charge from 80 to 100. Then 4.9V 0.0A and the power bank auto shutdown
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
The time on the display is the time left in the battery pack not time to charge. Power banks often shut off at low power levels, keeping them active all the time will deplete their own battery too quickly. This is normal behavior. They do sometimes struggle with watches on the final few percentage points. I usually plug both a phone and a watch in that way it keeps the power bank active until charging is finished.

How Long Does It Take To Fully Charge The Powerbank From 0 To 100??
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
From 0 - 100 percent it took 80 minutes to charge at the the fastest charge rate of 65W. If you charge it slower multiply that number, so 30W will take about 170 minutes.

Good day, I am using Baseus 65W, 20000mAh power bank. And I have a question. What is the healthyest way for power bank to charge, at 20V/3A , or 5V/1,5A ? Thanks in advance.😁
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
A power bank like this is a fairly large battery, with a good charge management circuit they should be able to take charge at the full 20V/3A and still have a long battery life. The battery has a large surface to dissipate heat so it doesn't get all that warm while charging at that rate either which helps. I've used it outside in the sun before, I don't recommend that without shade. You could manage the battery life a little charging a little slower maybe 30W, taking it down to

can this power up the ROG Ally?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 11 месяцев назад
I looked into the specifications for that device and I am not convinced that anything except the supplied adapter will power it. They are extremely vague with the specifications and don't mention if it supports PD. It makes sense that it will with the USB C port.
@pospitchp3416
@pospitchp3416 10 месяцев назад
Yes it does. But you need to watch it. When power bank drops to 20%, it resets and starts actually charge itself from ROG Ally battery. I think that percentage display is really not accurate or mine has some issues.

Hello ATOP, can you teach us how we take the Wh of a PowerBar and determine whether or not we can power an appliance with it? Do we just do a straight comparison of if the Wh of the appliance is smaller than the power bank? Like for a blender, or TV, or electric blanket
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
A watt*hour is energy. Devices require power in watts. The power bank or battery has to be able to supply enough power in watts to make the appliance go first. Then energy, watt*hour, Wh, will tell you how long the power bank will run for by taking Energy (Wh) dividing it by Power(w) which will equal Runtime (hours) assuming the power bank can deliver the necessary watts.

I got the 65watt version but when using with my Honor Magic4 it does not give me the full scp charging speed of 65 watts even tho it says it supports SCP.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
That might be a bit of the marketing magic wand. It _supports_ it but it doesn't mean it'll go full speed. That device likely uses it's own protocol so it isn't fully compatible so you have to buy a charger from Honor to get full speed. I noticed they do not list any protocol with the charging rate.
