Good day Rob! Thank you so much for the shout out! Our low-cost system involves a custom 10 gallon shallow fish tank stocked with a bunch of nanofish (13 chili rasbora, 9 bumblebee gobies, colonies of cherry shrimp and snails). The baskets we use, have slats in the bottom with an air stone attached below for the same reason you mentioned in the video! The media we use in ours is basic aquarium gravel. The best part in our experience of having this incorporated into what was previously just a display aquarium, is the fact that we get to stock the tank relatively high, without any compromise in water quality. No water changes. No algae bloom either! For aquarium fishkeepers, this is a major win! Thanks again for the shout out Rob! We hope to scale this up. These things can change lives! 😁

Ive seen pool liners in tractor tires being used for fish and grow beds. Quite funny. All free sourced. Above ground pools get thrown out every year up north where I am. They even pay for their gas selling the aluminum back to the metal people.
@RobsAquaponics

Both the tyres & pool liners aren't the best to use for fish & veg you want to eat. They will leach a load of toxins into the water from what I've read. The aluminium siding makes great free form garden edging. 😉 Cheers mate.

Hi Rob, another top clip, your animations are always really great to help see how things work. I thought the inclusion of load of other people's systems was a really nice touch. Only thing I wasn't sure about was the bit about the mineralisation tank, just whether it fitted with the idea of it being a clip to get beginners into aquaponics? Hi Rob I've been watching your videos but since you have beginners guide to aquaponics, Im trying to add plants on my aquarium. So I have a large aquarium that has filter that water runs on top of of the aquarium (not sure what's the technical term). Anyway I have been adding the clay stones on top. Usually, I had the biofilter such as bio balls, ceramic stones etc. But now I'm experimenting it by adding spring onions on top with the clay balls. And so far it's doing great. I may need to add more freshwater fish

Thanks for all the great info. Can I use kratky grow beds instead of a bed with a growing medium?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Not a Kratky bed as they just have standing water in them & the organic nutrients would go anaerobic fairly quickly. Deep Water Culture (DWC) grow system is basically the same. They're basically raft beds that have a water turnover of up to once per hour & work really well with aquaponics. You will still need some form of biofiltration to convert the ammonia in the fish waste to nitrate though.
@hetewei
@hetewei 2 года назад
great video as always! I was wondering if I could have the grow bed under the fish tank. do you think this setup would work? the fish tank water falls directly into the grow bed and then goes to a secondary tank where the water is pumped back to the aquarium. greetings and thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
You certainly can mate. The water from the grow bed would fall into a sump tank where you would situate the pump. 👍
@MrRiggsad
@MrRiggsad 2 года назад
Hi Rob, love the videos. I have been watching yours and a few other aquaponics channels learning about it, but had not made a system yet. However I was thinking about adding a grow bed to my existing koi pond primarily to act as extra filtering. The pond has been stable for about 15 years and has about 50 koi in it , and is about 55,000 liters. I figure I could probably support a decent size bed in that pond, and since it's been stable without the grow bed, I can't see where adding the extra filtering of the plants could possibly hurt it...
@bwakel310
@bwakel310 2 года назад
You would have to feed the fish more.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
You might have a few issues with low nutrient levels as bwakel310 alluded to above. It can't hurt to try & see how you go with just one bed. Maybe use some cheaper rock rather than the expensive clay to try & keep the price down. Maybe even some segregated baskets in the pond itself might be a better way to go. Would like to know how you get on if you give it a crack.
@MrRiggsad
@MrRiggsad 2 года назад
@@RobsAquaponics didn't think about the possibility of being too LOW in nutrients for the plants. That's a good point though, if it's already stable it probably would be low, of course I could bypass some of the water past the existing bio filters, and I somehow suspect the koi would not be angry if I gave them a bit more food, I'll see about setting up a small bed this winter and spring. Hey Rob I’m growing ginger in Ga and the winter is coming, wanted to know what’s the best way to cut back or should I bring it inside?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi WS. I would bring it inside if you get hard frosts that may freeze the top of the ground as it will cause the rhizome to rot when it thaws out. If your temp doesn't drop below freezing you could leave it out. We're in an equivalent to zone 10 here & ours does fine left in the soil & aquaponics through Winter.

Slight correction with the air stone, it doesn’t directly add oxygen to the water, it agitates the water surface, essentially enlarging the surface area, enhancing gas exchange o2 into and co2 out of water

Rob, I have viewed a few videos and am wondering if it's cost effective. After initial proof of concept small system(s), can I run a system capable of sufficient food to pay for its expense. Startup costs are separate from system continuous operation. Maintenance is part of total operating expense. I have 2 ibc totes to use as I expand. I understand if I am asking for too much info. A pointer to calculate cost to yield ratio will suffice. Climate is a factor I assume. I am in NEK near Canada. Until I get my geothermal greenhouse going I will need to harvest after 3-4 months. My geothermal is primitive setup. Just a 10ft deep trench circulating air that returns at 50° at all times. If I can ever get wind or solar I could power a heat pump too. Or maybe a Stirling engine generator. Think big or go home, right.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi Daniel. It can be done but I have no figures or calculators to share with you sorry mate. I look at it this way, the fish are home grown without the medicines that are fed to farmed fish that get imported (we're an island nation that imports farmed fish, go figure) so that by itself is worth it for me. The Jade perch we use have a FCR (feed conversion ratio) of 1.6 so at AU$88 a 20kg bag it cost $7.04 a kg or $3.52 to grow them out to a harvest size of 500G. The veg side of things will help up the cost effectiveness as well but I've never really attempted to factor that in. Your plans sound very interesting & I'd be interested so see how your system progresses if you end up having a crack at one mate. Cheers, Rob.

One probably wouldn't hurt Leon. 👍 You can also get small fish that will clean the algae as well. Best to ask at a local aquarium as to what would work best in your climate.

Hi, nice video, but i have some questions, will my setup work, if the the whole system will be in water? What i mean: for example there will be tank 100*100cm and 40cm height. And i will put 50*100cm busket 15cm heigt straight on top (it will be just 2cm out of tank) will it work? Or it must be out of tank?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 месяцев назад
It could work if I understand it correctly. The fish mag have a feed on the roots if they grow through the media into the tank though.

can you use an existing stock tank as a 'fish water' source? we have 200 acres with a few stock tanks, I'm looking at using 1 ti supply a few grow beds. is there such a thing as too much water/fish for the grow beds?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi mate. As long as the water is fairly clean it should be OK. You can over do it with fish if you don't have enough biofiltration/media grow beds. Basically, they can produce more waste than the bacteria can handle & the system will crash. Having too much water & not enough fish can be an issue as well. The nutrients just get too dilute. Have seen folks toss 50 silver perch into an inground pool & the plants did crap. Whereabouts in OZ are you located if you don't mind me asking? Cheers.

@@RobsAquaponics Thank you for the reply! I am wanting to do this in North-Central Texas, USA. Tank is stocked with bass perch (sun) and catfish. Its about a 40 meter diameter stock tank depending on the season and amount of rain for the year. I would need to pump the water up a hill beyond the fence/s to the house where I would put the grow beds (we have cattle that use the tanks for water) and then that's where I'm not sure what to do with the water from the grow beds,,, back to the tank?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
@@seaphor665 Back to the tank would be fine. 👍 Am not sure that a tank that size would have a load of nutrients in it. Might be better to try floating some baskets or rafts in the tank first to see how the plants grow first.

Hello! So I’ve been planning to make this work as my capstone project but my group kept running into issues. We had to be creative and make our own unique design since our teacher said that many batches have done it before us already. We also ran into a problem regarding nutrient deficiencies which is our main issue. Any help or suggestions in solving that? We would really appreciate it.

I like to use soluble kelp powder as a general tonic as it includes a load of potassium. You only need a VER SMALL amount though. 3tsp turns my 1600L of water very dark.

Hi, Rob im in south Australia how much does it cost to run a pump annually? ruffly
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hey Michael. Power is fairly easy to work out. Multiply the watts of your pumps by 24 (hours) then by 365 (days). eg. 80w pump would use (80x24)x365 = 700,800 or 700.8kWH. Next look at your power bill to see what they charge per kW & you should have a ballpark power bill figure for running the system. Hope that helps mate.

There are some designs where folks turn it off at night. I prefer to keep the pump running for the fish so they have optimum water quality 24/7

Sooo I have a question and that is flow rate. So I get the system puts out let's say the good water that's filtered as fast as the pump is putting the bad water back into the tank with the fish. Since it's gravity from filter to filter back to the tank which gets pumped back into the fish tank to start again. So how do you manage the return water when let's say the good water first stop is this bed, and then this bed. Do you turn down the flow rate at the pump so less get pumped back which slows everything else down. Guess I'm having a hard time with my brain when bed 1 needs this much flow when bed 2 needs this much. Which means the flow back into the return tank at the bottom which get pumped back to the fish. What's the best way to manage the flow rate of the water from bed to bed so that the return tank doesn't go dry
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Месяц назад
Sump tank sizing does play a part in it. I like to make sure that it's volume is 50% the combined total volume of flood & drain grow beds. That will make sure that there will be enough water in there to cover the pump & also give a safety net of extra water to lengthen the periods between water top ups.

Why use grow media? Why not grow the plant roots directly into the tank?

Fish would eat the roots. The media also acts as a biofilter that homes the bacteria that process the waste.
