In this video we take our entry level AR-15 built from a CMMG Mk4LE parts kit out to the range to do some practical accuracy testing out to 300 yards. We use nothing more than the Magpul MBUS rear backup sight and standard front sight base that comes stock on this setup and a 50 yard battle sight zero. Stay tuned as we will be upgrading this rifle with a new trigger, free float rail and optic and see exactly which upgrades provide the best improvements in accuracy individually and collectively in future videos. As always, much more on the way.

today I shot the ar 15 for the first time ( I live in europe , so yeah it's a big thing for me ) and wow ... I shot indoors 100 meters with a small scope and it was dead on target . I can finally relate ( at least a little bit ) to the things you say , it was love at first shot.. I also shot a ruger mini m14 today , but the smile on my face came from the AR

I’m glad that Eric has Chad shoot in the videos. It’s good to see that Eric realizes Chad is a better Marksman and isn’t afraid of letting the viewers see the difference between skill levels. I’m far closer to a novice than most, and with more practice it’s good to see that an improvement in accuracy is attainable.

As a man that has been a pistol enthusiast since adolescence and is now starting to get interested in, and learn about, the AR, I found this style of video to be absolutely fantastic. I'm really excited to see where this series goes and am positive that it will be a great learning experience for me. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos with not only shooting to show example, but also talking about what's going on as it's happening. Having the points of view and explanation from two different men is a great way to make sure as much ground is covered as possible. Great job guys.

Well done, gentlemen. Shooting iron sights is a skill. Learned on irons many years ago (the 70s), switched to optics in the 90s, then recently tried irons again. Horrified by how much I had forgotten and had to re-learn. Eric and Chad are extremely humble in this video.

My AR build ended up being a mid length 16 inch barrel HBAR. I actually ended up liking this set up better. I did have a couple of hick ups due to the mid length. First off, I bought the hand guard and gas tube as carbine length, and ended up having to buy mid length, then my buffer spring was a carbine spring too, That didn't show up until I finished the gun and fired it for functionality. It started short stroking. The empty case would eject but the next round didn't load. I did some research and ordered a chrome silicon buffer spring and that fixed the short stroke. It's a lighter spring, and evidently going from a carbine length to mid length, there just wasn't quite enough gas pressure to fully cycle with the carbine spring. But that worked out ok too, because the carbine spring has a life expectancy of around 12,000 rounds, but the chrome silicon spring has a life expectancy of around 750,000 rounds. Long past my rifles life expectancy or mine. I should never have a problem with it. Over all, I really enjoyed the build. I learned a lot and my supervisor wants me to build one for her too. She has to order her parts, then we'll sit down and start assembling. Looking forward to it.

I'm new to owning firearms and purchased a standard AR-15 (basic Saint) with similar iron sights. I've only fired it three times, but I love it. It has the nostalgia of my military experience, but was never in a career that required more than the once a year qualification. My goal since purchasing in Nov 2021, is to get a 1 inch MOA (wishful thinking) at 100 yards BEFORE I upgrade to a scope. With that said, I loved this video and the philosophy of working those iron sights to force my skill. I keep coming back to learn more! Thank YOU Eric and Chad for the candid, honest reviews!
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 Год назад
A scope is not an upgrade, match conditioning the rifle is what you need to do, as well as shoot match grade ammunition. Then results will be all about Marksmanship Knowledge and Skill. For that to come to fruition you will want to get some training. There’s none better than that presented in the USAMU’s Small Arms Firing School.

Rifleman's Creed[1] This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will... My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit... My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will... Before God I Swear This Creed my rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it,

The DOD standard for the M16A1 was 1 mil. That is 3 1/4 MOA. Mine shot better than that. With issue sights mine would hold a dime at 25 meters. That translates to about 2.4 MOA with iron. So the platform is inherently accurate.

Accuracy is the barrel, tge shooter and a large part of it that most people leave out is ammunition. Quality very consistent ammunution will make a world of difference especially when talking about longer distances.

In the Marine Corps, to hit center on a 300 yard target you have to hit a 12 inch circle, Back in my day, we didn't have anything but open sights. At 200 yards, we used the same target but you had to shoot 5 rounds in the offhand, 5 kneeling, and 5 sitting and 10 rounds rapid fire from the kneeling. At 500 yards we were prone for 10 shots. To hit center you had to hit the 20 inch wide by 40 inch tall man silhouette. Out of a possible 250 points the best I ever did was 248. I went to the 500 with the possibility of getting a perfect score, but the wind had different ideas. We also had rapid fire at the 300 using the "D" target that was 26 inches wide by 19 inches tall half man silhouette. Fun days guys. You guys should do a video to recreate the old rifle range days and see if you can achieve the expert rating. If interested, I will give you the particulars and what we did on each firing line. Enjoy y'alls videos! This is my rifle this is my gun, this is for fighting this is for fun! Marines die, that's what we're for, but the Marine Corps will live forever and that means you live forever! We will conquer communism, with the aide of God and a few Marines!

Great demonstration of how one zero can be "minute of man" accurate out to 300 yards. The 50 yard zero, on my rifle, puts me 2" high at 100, 3" high at 150(apex), 2" high at 200, zero again at 285, and about 5" low at 300. My optics are mounted a little higher than normal. I'm a tall guy. This is the perfect zero, in my opinion. But, it really doesn't matter what zero that you choose, you just need to learn your rifle, at different distances. Get out and SHOOT! Ballistics calculators can help you get in the ballpark, but you MUST know your EXACT muzzle velocity, and your EXACT height of your optics, above your bore. Keep in mind that the advertised muzzle velocity on the box, is never correct. My average MV is around 2,950 fps, out of a 16" barrel. Great shooting guys! Especially with irons...

@leroyatleroys
@leroyatleroys 6 лет назад
I honestly like to try different stances because each has benefits and draw backs. If I am shooting at medium to long ranges, I have the stock fully extended. Still, some people like to have their eye as close to the ghost ring or optic as possible. Since the 5.56 doesn't kick much, people have no issues having their nose up to the charging handle to get a bigger sight picture. I don't, but if I we're clearing a building, I would have the stock more collapsed to help make my silhouette smaller, make it easier to move in small areas and doors, and the tighter feel on the weapon helps maintain control while firing consistently in close quarters. Though, I almost never collapse the stock entirely. I usually have it at 3rd position on a six point stock. Also, when I was enlisted, body armor made firing with a fully extended stock uncomfortable, so when I was issued an M4 to replace my M16, it was nice to shorten the stock to make up for the extra space of my armor.

@ltljohn1725
@ltljohn1725 6 лет назад
There is no such thing as over stabilizing a round.. Internet myth. Ideal Twist rate is determined by length of bullet not weight but heavier bullets tend to be longer. Some rifles like different weights in bullets or types of bullets in same weight. The only problem with fast twist and light bullets is sometimes a light jacketed high velocity bullet will come apart with to fast a twist. The 22-250 with a fast twist light bullets is the one most common with this problem. FMJ bullets will not have this problem.

would an ak do this?
@jakedunning9995
@jakedunning9995 6 лет назад
Short answer- YES But your question is too open ended...... If you get a last ditch rifle and put garbage ammo through it, it can have up to 4-5MOA accuracy; But a well manufactured AK with Wolf Military ammo (any kind really) can easily match this level of accuracy. The whole difference is that 7.62×39 goes transonic several hundred yards before 5.56×45 will; although with 5.56 even shooting hot loaded, heavy grain bullets or something similar still doesn't have the terminal effect most people want at such ranges. (Pushing either cartridge beyond 500m involves fighting the wind a good deal as well) So, the long answer is- both platforms have had decades of R&D behind them as well as the ammunition they use, meaning within reasonable engagement distances (0-300yrds) with either platform; AK or AR, rifle or SBR, FMJ or HPBT, they will always out-perform the end user.(99.999% of the time). There are the few...

what is stringing?
@Iraqveteran8888
@Iraqveteran8888 8 лет назад
Stringing is basically where anamaloies such as barrel harmonics and heat start to cause groups to open up in a way where the throw shows in a vertical or horizontal line. The groups are still "consistent" but it's the odd factor that causes the groups to open up. The idea is that the same rifle would group reasonably well save for factors like handguard contact, barrel temperature, etc
@Iraqveteran8888
@Iraqveteran8888 8 лет назад
Also, sometimes stringing can be caused by variances in factory ammo. Usually present in the real cheap ammo.
@ciri1993
@ciri1993 8 лет назад
+Iraqveteran8888 What about the barrel in relation to accuracy when heating up? Heavy vs pencil. Will that be a consideration and upgrade?
@jakeweston8616
@jakeweston8616 8 лет назад
When the barrel gets heated up then accuracy can loosen a bit. (A lot of guys use this as an excuse as to why they aren't shooting good.) A heavier contour barrel will maintain better rigidity and therefore be able to better sustain accuracy when heated. Naturally a lighter barrel due to its thinness will heat up easier and therefore be more susceptible to loosening accuracy. Floating barrels have less stresses on them therefore they can ideally deliver a little better accuracy plus they typically have better heat ventilation which can help the barrel cool down a little faster. Unless you shoot regularly, then getting a floating barrel is useless. Just go with a standard milspec M4 carbine configuration. For example I have a Colt M4 6920, Colt M4 6940 (meaning it has a floating barrel), and Colt M16A4, all with trijicon 4x32 ACOGs. I shoot at a 19" wide gong out to over 600 yards and I can't really tell the difference in accuracy between the three of them. All three rifles can very easily hit the gong at that distance if I get my wind direction right. So point being, don't get caught up in thinking you need to make all these stylish upgrades to your rifle.

But...he was 20 years old on that infamous day, so who knows how he was after years of self practice and his high school years are irrelevant to recent history. In fact, there were 2 separate 3 round volleys. The first volley of 3 were on target and if Trump hadn't turned his head it would have been 3 hits. The other 2 bullets of the first volley missed Trump by inches. There is a NYT photo showing the 2nd or 3rd shot whizzing by Trump's cheek, missing by inches. That was not the 1st shot that struck his ear. And that absolutely can be a 5.56mm wound to his ear if it grazed it and didn't hit it directly especially with that fluke head turn. It was a miracle really that it missed.

I like the honest and straightforward way you guys teach us so much. I have one suggestion: Always talk about twist rate as it is fundamental to accuracy depending on bullet weight/length. For example, shooting a 1:9 TR with a 77g bullet is not going to work well past 75 yards no matter what length barrel you have. Very helpful if you would provide TR as standard info on all the rifles you test when talking about the ammo. Thanks again for all the education and great honest videos.

It 200 yards was nothing with iron sights. I put on a cheap 3-9x50 for 500 yards, and it was not hard at all. The gun was Anderson barrel, Anderson bolt, a2 front sight post, Ncstar Vism flip up rear sight. Scope was leapers mil-dot.
