PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT is about important maintenance steps that are usually neglected by new drivers.
Proper maintenance can help you avoid costly repairs, and ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly for years to come. The first step in maintaining your car, is to know what maintenance tasks, need to be done. These include changing the oil, checking and topping up fluids, checking tire pressure and tread depth, and checking the brakes. You should also check the battery, and its connections, specially, when it charges poorly, or quickly discharges on its own. The lifespan of a car battery can vary, depending on the type, the quality of the cells, and how it is used and maintained.
Changing the engine oil and the oil filter, is one of the most important maintenance procedures you can do. It’s recommended that you change the engine oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, depending on your car’s make and model, and the type of engine oil used. The oil is the lifeblood of your engine and keeps it running smoothly, so it’s important to make sure it’s clean and use only the type of oil recommended by your car's manufacturer. The same applies to the transmission fluid.
Checking and topping up fluids is also important to make sure the levels are correct. This includes checking the coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Consult your owner’s manual to determine the proper levels for each fluid, the fluid type necessary, and to find out if your car has a power steeringpump. If it uses an electric power steering module, power steering fluid is not needed.
Also check the condition of the drive belt, and replace it if you see any signs of damage, otherwise, replace it according to the schedule recommended in the owners manual. Checking tread depth, and tire pressure, is also important for your safety. Low tire pressure can lead to poor handling and reduced fuel efficiency; severely worn tires can lead to reduced traction and increase the risk of accidents especially, on wet roads.
Remember to rotate your tires every 5,000 miles, or follow the schedule recommended in the owners manual to ensure even tire wear. You should also have your car’s suspension and steering components checked, as soon as you notice issues or hear unusual noises while driving. Checking the brakes is another important task. If your brakes are worn out or make weird noises when braking it can be dangerous to use your car, especially when driving downhill. Be sure to have your brakes checked by a mechanic if you notice any issues.
A dirty engine air filter can reduce your car’s efficiency and performance. In the summer, it’s important to check the coolant. Your car’s engine can overheat in hot temperatures, so you want to make sure the correct type of coolant is used and at the right level. To avoid corrosion problems with the engine's cooling system, never use plain water as a substitute for coolant fluid.
In addition, don't forget to change the engine thermostat as part of regular maintenance. A worn out thermostat can cause overheating and ruin your car's engine. Also, don't forget to maintain your car’s air conditioning system to keep it in good shape, and to keep you cool during the summer season.
In conclusion, maintaining your car should be performed regularly, as it is important for its longevity and your safety while driving. Regular maintenance tasks, seasonal maintenance tasks, and knowing when to take your car to a professional, are all important factors in keeping your vehicle running smoothly.
