Understanding basic derivatives is essential for mastering calculus and solving various mathematical problems. This video provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the concept of derivatives, their rules, and their applications.
The video begins by defining the derivative as a measure of how a function changes as its input changes.
Step-by-step examples demonstrate how to compute derivatives using basic rules, such as the power rule, constant rule, and sum rule. The video explains each rule with practical examples, making it easy to follow and understand. You'll see how to differentiate simple polynomial functions and how these rules apply to more complex functions.
The video also covers the significance of derivatives in real-world applications, such as calculating rates of change in physics and economics. Common mistakes and misconceptions are addressed, ensuring a solid understanding of the concepts.
Ideal for students, teachers, and anyone new to calculus, this video breaks down the basics of derivatives into manageable steps. By the end, you'll be confident in your ability to compute and understand derivatives, enhancing your overall calculus skills.

Practical application of the math is asked for in Physics. The problem is you may have an A in the Math, but have no idea which part of Math you need for a particular physics problem.

1st, i love your videos. I'm in my 40s, have a B.S. but i just like these refreshers since i don't use 99% of my prior math courses in daily life. There has to be a way to film in better than 360p. These videos should be in 1080 at a minimum these days, for posterity. I think it would 100% add to the value of these lessons and their popularity. Just my 2 cents, but thanks for the great lessons anyways.

Thanks very much for the feedback. Yes, this is an older video. All of my newer videos the last maybe four or five years have been all in 4K. Thanks!

Couldn’t you use the X axis as an example of a tangent line of the vertex of the parabola? You have 2 tangent lines at the 5:16 mark.

Find the derivative of log|1/x|. Sol. Let f(x)=log|1/x| =log|x^-1|=-1log|x| f'(x)=-1.1/x=-1/x. Or f(x)=log|1/x|. f'(x)= 1/1/x ×-1/x^2=-x/x^2=-1/x.
