Basic Dolby Atmos Home Install & Review

In this video I upgrade a 5.1 home cinema system to a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos & DTS-X Capable system. It features a review of the Marantz NR1607 AV receiver and impressions of how effective Atmos is in the most basic two front upfiring speaker configuration in a small room.....continued....
Featuring the Marantz NR1607 AV Receiver, PSB Imagine XA Atmos Upfiring Speakers, PSB XB Bookshelf Speakers and PSB XC Centre Speaker.
UPDATE - CORRECTION - CLARIFICATION
I must have done a very bad job in the video of getting across the Atmos experience. So let me try again.
I really like my Atmos system. It sounds very very good. It's much better than my old system. The sound feels like it's coming from all around. "It feels like I'm in the middle of a bubble of sound".
Now my comments in the video were about expectations vs reality. I expected to be able to identify exactly where a sound was coming from...imagine someone dropping a coin upstairs on a wooden floor. In reality with just a couple of speakers that type of directional focus just isn't achievable...it also woundn't be achievable with four speakers as sound dissipates like a cone..rather than focusses like a laser. So whilst the sound comes from all around...it won't make you duck. It is though...and I repeat...it is, very good and much better than 5.1
ADDITIONAL INSTALL INFO
As I'm using upfiring speakers and have a small room with my seating sposition close to the rear wall, adding rear upfiring speakers is something that manufacturers recommend avoiding. The reason for this is because I would be too close to the rear speakers, so would hear the sound emanating from the speakers rather than the sound reflected off the ceiling...thereby making the installation of rear Atmos pointless. In a small room with upfiring speakers, it is recommended that you only install the front pair.

FAQs
Q) What happened to the projector setup?
A) After I got a 65" 4K OLED TV I've just been watching that. The room couldn't accomodate a large enough projector screen to make it worthwhile.
Q) You don't need expensive HDMI cables
A) If you try passing 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 through a HDMI cable that doesn't support 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 you'll soon see why you need to use the right cable. I'm not suggesting paying a lot of money for a cable you can get a cheap one, but just make sure it supports the standards you need or you experience connection issues. This isn't idle talk, I've tested this out...I don't make up nonsense for fun...observations are based upon personal experience....not just stuff I've heard.
Q) What about that switchbox?
A) I haven't used it...its from Amazon amzn.to/2hCynNE
Q) I wasn't paying attention and need you to justify to me why you bought a new AV receiver because that's a normal way to behave.

Thank You very much for all those videos. I had been growing up during eighties in Eastern Europe and, at that time, I didn't even know such things like 8-tracks or Videodiscs did exist. We only had vinyls, magnetics cassetes, reel tapes and (later) VHS' here. Watching all these cool technical devices from the past in good shape and still working is very informative and also big pleasure. Thanks again and please continue this good work :) And channel's host is loveable ;)

Surround sound has been around since the early 80s. Atmos has been around since 2010. So what happens is theaters get the technology first and then they send it to the home after a couple years to see if it works well.
@Oystein87
@Oystein87 4 года назад
This is a really basic setup so it's not even close to that cartoon. Also: Surround sound came early in the 80's but it was SHIT. Only when Dolby Digital and DTS came it got any good. Before that it was just a surround prosessing from a stereo signal. Sounded really cheap and bad. When digital formats with more channels came it was like night and day compared to the old shitty Dolby ProLogic setup etc.

You have a real ability to explain and demonstrate tech and concepts in ways the professional reviews and so-called experts often fail to do, and because of this I find your channel essential viewing. I believe Manrantz is part of the same company as Denon, and the clunky text-based menu and media player looks similar to my non-Atmos Denon AVRX4000. I find it painfully slow to navigate my DNLA based music library. The Yamaha (476) I utilize in my other lounge, in comparison, is a joy. Having said that, the smaller physical size of the Marantz is a real plus for smaller systems. Thanks for providing a great explanation of Atmos and the perceived benefits. Keep up the good work in 2017!

I've got a 4k 65'' TV (I was upgrading the size mainly, and at this point, since plasma TVs are out, the next-best thing was a 4K television, and the rapidly lowering costs of a new TV finalized the decision) but I still watch my movies in 1080p and with a 5.1 surround sound system. The prices you can get an amazing system at these days make trying to get the "latest and greatest" not particularly that desirable. Frankly, I'm not that impressed with 5.1 surround sound, generally speaking. I pretty much never hear anything behind me or to the sides or anything. I think maybe in 5 movies in my 30+ collection did I notice a sound or two coming from behind at maybe one or two inconsequential moments. It's really the "wrap-around" effect that keeps it worth it. There's a greater sense of "place."

Enjoyed your video. I'm on a budget myself, I've upgraded my player and TV to 4K, but my receiver is a 15 year old Yamaha. I upgraded my front speakers to Klipsch and I really do like them. I use a pair of Polks from the 80s as B speakers in between them and my center channel speakers (I've wired 3 speakers together and I really like how that makes dialogue more pronounced, as well as giving a wider soundstage...I know I would probably be hissed at for doing it, but it helps the dialogue stand out). I don't have the money to upgrade my receiver now, but I feel like the Yamaha RX-V2500 has better quality amps than receivers nowadays (they pack so many features in for the money, they must compromise somewhere). I keep telling myself that! Even though my audio isn't uncompressed, I feel like the better amps are a good compromise. Plus, I like the A/B speakers...you don't find that anymore. I also can't afford to do Atmos. When we built our house, I had the contractor wire for in-wall speakers (I have a 7.1 setup). At the time, THX and Dolby promoted getting the speakers up at least 2' above your listening position. The Yamaha receiver manual said to raise them to about 6', which I did as our basement ceilings are 9'. Now, Dolby says to mount your speakers at ear level, and with Atmos ceiling speakers this makes sense to give more space between the surrounds and the overheads. To be honest, with the side and surround speakers mounted so high (actually, when you think about it, movie theater speakers have to be mounted high as well), it has a surprising height effect. I watched "Midway" today and it sounded as though the planes and guns were not just side to side, but overhead as well. My wife and daughters don't really care about surround sound. When we built the house, my wife said, "I don't really care as long as the wires are hidden." For some reason, most females just don't get into surround sound. Maybe it's the way the male brain is wired, but I absolutely find a good surround sound track very thrilling and immersive. Some are much better than others! Tweaking the setup is half the fun!

Good video. A few comments: -in ceiling or on ceiling Atmos/DTS:X speakers are ALWAYS better than ceiling bounce speakers. I've heard several ceiling bounce setups vs on ceiling setups and they are not comparable. Also ceiling bounce introduces too many variables such as where the seating position is, the height of the ceiling, the angle of the ceiling, the material the ceiling is made of, etc. In ceiling or on ceiling speakers can be installed in locations that reduce the variables. -four ceiling speakers is ALWAYS better than two (obvious). Two ceiling speakers up front is okay but the overhead audio will sound like it "dies" once it arrives to your seating position. -you don't need to cut huge holes in your ceiling for overhead sound. I mounted four of my small satellite Harman Kardon HKTS1 speakers onto the ceiling joists and angled them properly toward the seats and this combined with my Marantz SR7010 and Definitive Technology ground speakers sound phenomenal.

True HD Audio was the last significant upgrade for home theater in my book, unless trying to fill a much larger room with sound. On another note, it's worth using larger speakers as surrounds...plenty of info out there as to why.

I have a similar Marantz Home theatre receiver but bigger... and I'm sorry to say my 1973 Harman Kardon 930 receiver just blows it away for sound quality. Not even close. The bass has way more slam on the HK and the mids and highs are just sublime. Icing on the cake... the HKs very conservative 48 w/ch sounds much louder than my Marantz at a rated100 w/ch. Technology has progressed a great deal in most areas... except for consumer home audio where what passes for amplifiers now with their ICs replacing discrete parts and power supplies the size of walnuts... sounds limp, thin and sterile compared to classic gear of the 70s.

socksumi thank you!! I've been telling people that for years, and they often don't believe me. Or don't listen/care. My 1971 quadraphonic HeathKit all transistor amp only has 35 W RMS per channel, but ruler flat well beyond 20-20k with no audible distortion at full power (I can usually squeeze out 40 watts). It gets WAY louder than 100-150 w/pc modern home theater amps, that distort much sooner and don't have a full sound at any level. Especially with those Class D ICs. The power supply alone on the HeathKit is absolutely massive. I love it. The lights even dim a bit when it's on and pumping. Though I do need to replace one of the Motorola power transistors.

socksumi also, with good hifi speakers from the 70's, one doesn't need a sub. If I could get 5 or 7 of my old Sansuis, they'd make a killer theater setup.

Mikkel Kirketerp Speakers offering true 20 hz extension are extremely rare... now and especiall 40 years ago. However the IMF RSPM MK IV, a British made transmission line system from the late 70s was purported to go down to 16 hz. Even the inexpensive original ADVENT LOUDSPEAKER did close to 25 HZ when aided by in-room boundary reinforcements. Other 1970s names that reached to almost 20 HZ (when measured in room)... Acoustic Research AR-9, McIntosh, Bozak, Linn Isobaric, Janis & M&K subs, Infinity, Dayton-Wright, Bozak, Cerwin Vega S2 and others.

I have an Atmosphere capable amp and recently could have fitted ceiling speakers (room was redecorated) but opted for old fashioned 7.1 instead so pleased to hear that Atmos set up is not a night and day difference. To be honest I cannot see many in the home adopting more speakers let alone ceiling ones but can see a future for Atmos, as with 3D as just another niche which enthusiasts can enjoy if they wish (a bit like Dolby surround still being in an old fashioned stereo mix back in the day!) please keep the vids coming!

The max number of monitors (speakers) for Atmos is 128. If you ask me, mixing and surround panning for 7.1 is a pain.
@djp_video
@djp_video 7 лет назад
With Atmos you aren't mixing discrete channels. You position the audio where you want it, then the Atmos decoder figures out which channels to use to put the audio where it needs to be. The only real change from 5.1 mixing is that you now have a 'height' component. Everything else is basically the same.
@filminginportland1654
@filminginportland1654 7 лет назад
doubledeej I think the point is if you're doing post production audio, mixing for surround vs 2 channel stereo is a major pain. At least, that's what I think he said. I mix music, and I _hate_ mixing surround.
@djp_video
@djp_video 7 лет назад
That isn't the way it works with surround mixing. You don't manually set the volume for each channel. Essentially the biggest difference between stereo and surround is that in place of a Pan control you've got what is essentially a joystick to select the sound position. So you're selecting a 2D (surround) or 3D (Atmos or DTS:X) position for each source instead of a 1D position (stereo pan). Other than that it is pretty much the same. Someone who isn't good at creating a proper image in a stereo mix might struggle doing surround, but for anyone who does it well surround isn't really that much more difficult or time consuming. The concepts transfer nicely. EQ, effects, and everything else are pretty much the same. The surround mixes I've done haven't really taken any longer than stereo.

I'd say going to the cinema has gotten better since 2003. With digital projection the film is no longer visibly worn out after a couple days, and there's certainly no issue of sound sync. In regards to chewing gum on the screen, that sounds like your local cinema are a bunch of twats who don't do basic upkeep.
@CommodoreFan64
@CommodoreFan64 7 лет назад
I don't care for the cost of going to the movies these days, or 3D since I can't see it proper, but beyond that at a good decently clean theater the experience has gotten better for sure, unless some kid is on their cell phone the whole time lol! Also I'm lucky I have a drive in theater about an hour from me, so me, and my g/f pack the van, her kid, and my sister's kids during the summer a couple times, and go see a double feature which is cheaper, and gets the kids out of the house lol!
@filminginportland1654
@filminginportland1654 7 лет назад
Nukleon even on film, sound is ON the film, so it should never be out of sync, unless they were one of the few who played digital soundtrack from disc AND didn't know how to sync. But I've never seen any sync issues. And film does not get scratchy until many, many plays and if handled properly, even then lasts a long time. Consider how long first-run films are played before hitting a second-run theater, where even there it's still pretty good. And when you consider the mounting of all the reels onto the giant playback reel, then disassembly after its run, at every single theater, plus the shipping back and forth - it's amazing they hold up so well. Most cities in the US have good theaters.
@ncstrev
@ncstrev 7 лет назад
Filming In Portland Unfortunately, film handling was a lost art and was rarely done properly over the past 15 years. It was also easy to have audio sync issues by threading the projector incorrectly. Digital cinema has done wonders for presentation quality, but it's still possible to have lens alignment and focus issues as well as sound (amplifier/speaker) problems. And now, its highly unlikely anyone at the cinema has the skill to fix the problem...they have to call the engineer and wait for a service visit. I am one of those engineers and I am very selective about which cinema I would pay to watch a feature. I still like viewing on the big screen and an Atmos system, properly tuned with well mastered content, is just amazing. It's hard to beat a system with 77 individually addressable audio channels...and Atmos supports even more channels than that!
@Nukle0n
@Nukle0n 7 лет назад
Filming In Portland for the last 20 years or so of film projection they often used DTS which wasn't on the film, came on the side on a CD that was synced up to the film with sync dots on the film. I think the last movie I saw in theatres that was on film was Kick-Ass, and it was maybe 2 weeks after the premiere and it was scratched and dirty as shit.

I didn't like the fact that if someone tuned the TV on with the TV's remote, everything went out of sync. I bought a 'theater in a box' setup from Onkyo about two years ago. It's the most affordable setup for Atmos at home for me. I was really impressed with the sound quality of the set. While the speakers won't win any beauty contest, they do a very decent job with the Atmos experience. It is rather funny that I even play all my movies with DTS as Dolby Atmos now (the amp can simulate the extra channels), as you have mentioned, once you get used to it, it seems something is missing if the two height speakers are off. They just give that extra oomph! I really enjoy that system and only wish they had a setup with 5.4 now. That will definitely enrich the experience even more.
@droidzhunterz6861

Honestly, Atmos in such a small room is silly. What I would do is replace your tiny surround speakers with the Atmos ones and mount them close to the ceiling in each corner. That way you get a better soundstage plus the speakers are out of the way and not drawing attention, which is the point of any speaker. If you wanted to take it further then those tiny surrounds could be mounted on the actual ceiling for a true Atmos setup.
@droidzhunterz6861
@droidzhunterz6861 7 лет назад
Upfiring and ceiling mounted Speakers both require a dedicated channel on the back of the receiver otherwise Atmos can't work. His choice of receiver Marantz NR1607 is limited to 2 Atmos channels 5.1.2. The layout and position of the speakers are chosen in the settings. This will allow the receiver to play back the Atmos effects correctly for each setup.

You missed my point, I was talking about the surround channels. Its not so much about their physical appearence but rather the ability to create a seamless soundstage that does not sound obvious when listening. Getting the positioning right can help with this. Specifically lifting the ambient effects channels provide many benefits in a small room. If a speaker is right next to your ears then its not going to sound convincing or natural.
