I watched this as part of Maestra Judy's lesson program for her patrons. A great program I recommend to any one wanting to "matuon sa Cebuano". Thanks Maestra

I too struggle with literal thinking which tends to add complexity to something you want to say when complexity isn't necessary. With English there are sometimes many, many different ways to say basically the same thing. "Naguol ko sa imong balita" could reasonably be translated as: I am saddened by your news OR Your news makes me sad Often in English we would likely respond by ignoring the subject and respond in context. "Nagual ko sa imong balita" - That makes me sad - we infer by context that our response is to your news. My wife, who is from Cebu City, speaks English very well but at times the verbose ways of saying things in English is a real challenge for her. Keep it simple! I'm really enjoying your videos - thanks for all of your hard work!

Gwapa ka in the video photo maestra! You look extra beautiful. My English translation for "I feel sad of your news" would be "Sorry to hear that" or "I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible". Something to that effect. Salamat for another helpful video.

Hi Judy, May I please clarify one question. Why do I use "MALIPAY ko makakita nimo" to express the verb in the present instead of "NALIPAY" . "Napliapy" is supposed to be the past or present forme of the verb right??? Thanks and I'm really thankful for your content here. You've the best material for those who seeking into learning Bisaya/Cebuano. Thanks
@cebuano101
@cebuano101 4 года назад
Hi Victor, Daghan salamat :) Malipay ko makakita nimo it's more on a state of being happy seing the person. In English, this is like "I'm happy whenever I see" You may notice that the Ma and maka is used in this sentence - MAlipay ko MAKAkita nimo. Meanwhile, Nalipay ko nakakita nimo is indeed in the past tense. In English, this is like "I was happy that I saw you". You may actually add some time queues such as "adto" which means "at that time". You may notice that in this sentence we use NA & NAKA - "NAlipay ko NAKAkita nimo". I hope this help :) Maestra Judy

Naguol ko sa imong balita. I am very sad of your news. You are translaating literally. I would normally say "I am very sorry to hear of your news. In American English we tend to not mention our feeling as much as we are extending an apology for the other persons feeling. But I could also say "I am so sad to hear of your news."
@cebuano101
@cebuano101 7 лет назад
Yes, exactly! Sometimes when I make videos, shifting from Cebuano to English is a challenge because I tend to translate the words in Bisaya to English in literal form. I think this habit is very common among us ;D
@GoblinRage472
@GoblinRage472 7 лет назад
It is very common for me as well when I translate Bisaya. Sometimes my girlfriend jokes with me when i translate literal. Many times she and her friends will make jokes that I miss because the meaning is not the same as the words they use. Having very little experience in Bisaya I can do this often. hahaha
@cebuano101
@cebuano101 7 лет назад
hahaha I can imagine. Just keep going. Let them be happy with your Bisaya. The more mistakes you make the more you'll learn. For sure they are very helpful in correcting your bisaya.

There are variations of the Bisaya: Cebuano. Some words used in the province of Cebu might be rarely used in the Cebu City. I am from Cebu City.
