any advantage or disadvantage using a 1957 9" housing on my 1967 Fairlane build? It came from a T Bird. If the spring and flange dimensions are the same I will pick it up. It has the all round back cover on it.

Just make sure that the center section has a fill plug in it and you should be good to go. I'm not sure that the perches are going to be in the same place though.

I've got a question. I have had 2 cars, a 1971 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler and a 1970 Ford Torino Gt. Don' t have the Cyclone anymore, just the Torino and just put it on the road. But anyway they are both 351C 4v, 4 speed cars with the 9 inch (3.25 gears). Both cars have this same symptom and it drives me nuts. Whenever I let off the clutch from a complete stop the cars would violently shake and I would hear a repetitive clunking sound coming from the rear of the car. It does this probably 80% of the time. Once I get going (6-8 mph+) it goes away. I am 95% sure it is the rear differential, I just don't know what exactly. When I owned the Cyclone I always thought it was worn clutch packs because it had trac-lok. But the Torino has an open rear end and does the EXACT same thing at the exact same time. I haven't touched the driveline in the Torino yet, but when I had the Cyclone I replaced the u-joints and no dice. I remember having the rear of the Cyclone on jack stands, I would put it in gear (with engine running) and watch the tires spin and both were noticeably wobbly, bent axles? Do you have any ideas on what is could be? I hope you didn't mind reading my essay but this problem is very annoying and embarrassing and I get stressed out coming to a red light/stop sign. Any advice would be great.

We'd first look at the universal joints. It could also be an axle bearing issue. check those first before you break into the center section.

Can you tell how many splines is on a D2SW-C 9” rear end?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 5 лет назад
That number is for a pinion support. It is a standard unit. You would really need the axle tag to know. If the center section were out of a truck it would typically be a 31 spline. Passenger cars were typically a 28.

My '65 Mustang has an 8". I installed 4.55 gears and a 9" spool in 2003. Also installed 28x11.50x15 MT et streets, which people say you can't fit on a '65. Engine is a built 347 pushing 520hp. 650 with nitrous. For 20 yrs, never broke the axle. This weekend I replaced the wheel bearings and seals as I had some oil dripping down on the tires. I used to drag the car every weekend. I've entered several burnout contests walking away with trophies. Everyone that looks under it can't understand how it has a 8". I believe it's how you build it, how you treat it, and whether or not you bought cheap parts off the internet or name brand quality parts. The other thing I've defied is people say you can't drive a spool on the street. Really? I've done it for over 20 yrs. No, I don't do u-turns, but I drive it on the street. Other people say no way to put 9" parts in an 8". Really? Then you don't know much about racing and making stuff work. So much hearsay out there. To many people listening to others who haven't actually did it.

I've been turning wrenches on some aspect of a ford 9 inch axle for thirty years... surprisingly it was today that I 1st realized they offered 2 sizes in the carrier main bearings... a 2.89 and a 3.06. I had no clue... but today I also realized that I bought the wrong size bearing. DAMN!

I can confirm that the 8 inch will not handle pass 400-425 rwhp. My 65 stang is putting down 425 to 450 rwhp and I am on my third full rebuild. I have it done now as tuff as you can go with a 8 inch and so far no problems. Lol. One would think my stupid self would just get a 9 inch, but that would be smart of me and we can't do that.

the 9" come in multiple variations ..war cases,.wab cases ,n (nodular) are also on the pig and will give you a great place to start..you should measure the outside bearings too as it will give an indication of the axle size..they used different axle sizes and splines from the factory..

UAW marked where they left off before lunch so they don't miss any operations when they got back from lunch or the next day. they still do it until this day but now is a bit more modern mark such as a done operation button at each station.

What's ironic about this channel is that these guys are always plugging NPD. The ironic part is here their working on a Fairlane and NPD doesn't have a catalog for a Fairlane. Mustangs -Yes , Cougars - Yes , ford trucks - yes Galaxies and Fairlanes - Hell No!! WTH

Great Vid, I am in need of some help. I have a 1963 ford f100 with a one wheel peal diff. When I jack the rear end off the ground I can spin both rear wheels in either direction with the trans in "Park". Drive shaft doesnt move but wheels spin freely. Is this correct or is there something wrong with the rear end. My 85 year old uncle says thats how its supposed to work, but seems odd to me. Appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks

Is there anyone who can explain more how an Equa loc works compared to a Traction Loc?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 года назад
From a web site I found: The EquaLok rear axle design is older than TractionLok, and uses a belleville spring to tension the clutch pack. This design is somewhat compromised, as the tension is always constant, and is always the same, regardless of operating conditions. It has to strike a fine balance, as too much tension wouldn't allow it to slip when turning corners, and not enough tension would cause it to be too loose for hard acceleration and traction when needed. TractionLok is a torque-sensitive design that uses four coil springs that keep a constant tension on the clutch pack, but this tension is not very tight and is designed for light loads, such as driving on wet streets or on snow. The tooth design of the differential pinion is different from EquaLok, and was designed to put side loads on the side axle differential gear, which is connected to the clutch plates, which compresses the clutch pack and causes it to lock up. This design provided light locking for normal driving and increasingly firmer lockup for higher loads.

any idea what a "N" or "2" in yellow between the cast webs means? this is on my 8" going in my 56 f100.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 7 лет назад
An N is used on the Ford nine inch to denote a nodular center (if it is cast into the iron) An N or a 2 in yellow markal or paint can mean almost anything. I've heard tell that line workers would send messages on parts to friends further down the line. 2 might have been when Bob's shift ended. Someone may have a better explanation but I have no idea. --Jeff

Interesting guys. I really liked this one. Ive been curious about how much drag the 8 inch has vs the 9. It is known that the strength of the 9 comes from a low pinion angle witch also results in parasitic drag. I have been wondering about if the 8 has the same feature. Or if the pinion is alittle higher?
@AutoRestoMod

The pinion is about the same position, but the weight of the gears and diff make the 8 better for parasitic loss

This is how I make my living. I produce these videos. I put an incredible amount of my time, energy and effort into this; working roughly 6 days a week Bobby. I really hope that it looks effortless. That you don't think about the lack of shitty sound or handheld crap camera work. That means I'm doing my job. Let me put it to you another way, If you go into work tomorrow and your boss comes up and says, "Bobby, we want you to work for free." Bet you'd take that mighty poorly. So why do you want ME to work for free Bob? The ads I put up are not for skin cream or Tampax, they are relevant to the restoration of classic cars. Now the little bit of scratch I eek out of Google from their ads (WHICH I don't up until after four weeks; reducing my income and thereby making people like you bitch less)? I can't control that content. But Bob, I bet you scratch for every dollar you can get don't cha? Never have understood why you and other people like you bitch about a few ads for otherwise free content. If you don't like ads, stop watching RU-vid. Or just don't watch my videos. You will not change my need for income from something I work hard at to make. End of Soapbox speech.
