Basic Image Processing in PixInsight 1.8

This is a short tutorial on how to do some basic image processing tasks in PixInsight 1.8.
It covers some simple, quick ways to get from an unprocessed image to a final version that looks pretty decent. It covers the basic use of ColorCalibration, HistogramTransformation, TGVDenoise, UnsharpMask, and CurvesTransformation, as well as a couple masking techniques.
This tutorial does not include advanced processing techniques or initial image calibration techniques. These are subjects for a different video.

Richard. As a new user to PI and a relatively inexperienced astro image processor, I find your video is the easiest to understand when it comes to such a steep learning curve on programs such as PI. Thankyou!

The fact that you describe in detail what each function is and does at each step in the process makes it really helpful for a beginner like myself. A few other videos I have watched have just said click this then click that etc..

Richard, thank you so very much for presenting PixInsight in a way which is understandable. I have been wanting to go down the rabbit hole of astrophotography, but have been most intimidated by image processing, but not so much now. I look forward to viewing your other tutorials and am now not as fearful of going down the rabbit hole.

Thank you. The cadence of your presentation allows one to actually follow the presentation. Also thank you for taking time to elucidate the details of the main points and task. I agree w/ another commenter that this make PI much more approachable for a new user. Also since most everyone shoots M51 your choice of target is much appreciated by the beginner.

Excellent tutorial! Pleasing voice ... very easy to listen to! I haven't bought the program yet ... just doing some research on astrophotography. Actually, haven't bought a telescope yet either, but I'm definitely going to be using it for photography as well as observing once I do. I've pretty well pulled the trigger on a Celestron 1100 Edge HD and the new CGX mount ... but it seems some users have experienced problems with the the mount so I've decide to wait for a few months just to see how it pans out. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial!

I am not new to astrophotography but I am new to Pixinsight. I already follow your workflow most of the way but I have one question. You say "there's something else I want to show you" and we end up with Intensity Transformations, Histogram Transformations and you have a target called Integration_Clone_DBE. Where do you get that? The tutorial is great, your delivery is pleasant, and you talk TO us and not AT us. I just can't figure that one out. BTW, I was a Psych Major so you can't expect a lot! I currently use Topaz AI which works well but does nothing to the detail your process produces. Thanks a bunch for a great job.

Hi Richard, I shoot with an unmodded DSLR. I see hell number of stars in the stacked file. When I stretch it, my image is full of stars and the Nebula is less visible. What can I do so that my stretched image has less number of stars?
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 4 года назад
A good tool I like to use is Morphological Transformation toward the end of the process. If you use it with a star mask and you're careful about not masking in nebula areas, you can use it pretty quickly and easily to reduce the strength of stars in your image. There's some customization that's available, but if you just apply the default settings you'll get a sense for whether the tool will do what you want in particular, in which case you can continue to tweak the settings to match what looks best to you. Otherwise I'm not sure - it may be helpful to see a picture of a single frame and the stack as well!

OK, figured it out...if it says "no view selected" click on that drop down area and actually select your image...then the histogram is populated with data.

Hi Richard, I'm new to your channel and already appreciate it. Would you share what kind of Mount, OTA, Focuser, and cameras you use to capture your raw images with. When I see your initial stretched image, I just say, WOW! I wonder if my gear could collect all that? Thank you.
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 6 лет назад
Hi! All my images are captured with a Canon 600D. A few years ago I modified it to remove the IR cutoff filter that comes on DSLRs to get better reds. This image was done before that modification. I used to use a Celestron AVX mount, but replaced it later with a SkyWatcher NEQ-6 to handle a heavier telescope I would later purchase. This was shot on the AVX, using a SkyWatcher ED80. I still use that scope for wide field images, but for smaller objects I'll use a Vixen VMC 200L (too heavy for the AVX, hence the mount change). I shoot at prime focus, and haven't modified my focusers from what came on the scope. One day I'll probably buy a motorized focuser for convenience. Most gear can collect really nice images, the key is integration time! The best combination of the longest exposures you can make, and many of them, for the overall exposure time, will do wonders. Without a long focal length, your only limit is object size.

Nice one Richard, just one question, what do you mean by "press f12" at 10.53? That's how far I got but could get no further as I couldn't unstretch my image. Please help.Phil
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 7 лет назад
philip rees Sorry for the late reply. Usually the F12 key will activate/deactivate the screen transfer function. If you hit the nuclear icon or did CTRL+A and your image appears to stretch more, F12 turns that on and off. If you stretch using HistogramTransformation then the key won't undo the action. The key also applies/unapplies a particular use of the screen transfer function, so if you make changes to your image you should redo CTRL+A instead of just hitting F12

Richard - thank you for your video. I am totally stuck however. When I go to make my image nonlinear as in 11:11 of your video and after applying f12, my histogram show a totally diagonal line going from left to right upward at a 45 degree angle. In other words, it does not show the bell curve in your image or anything close to it. There is a light green line just above the left most slider that disappears about 2/3rds of the way to the right between the middle slide arrow and the far right slide arrow. I can only see the bell curve somewhat if I zoom unbelievably to very high amounts both in the top view as well as bottom view. There must be some setting in Histogram Transformation that is way off. Suggestions please. (by the way, I see a suggestion of just a bit of the bell curve to the extreme left in the upper picture if my image is set back to 8 bit instead of the 16 bit you recommend) Thank you.

some stupid questions...and I'm hoping you can help/answer them! a) I don't have the STF button on my menu (I'm using PixInsight on a Mac - a 13" MacBook Pro to be precise) and b) f12 does nothing... I also have a separate Luminance file that I wanted to combine with the combined RGB files, but I just can't figure out how to do it, and I can't find a video that shows you how to do this. very frustrating! edit: figured out a) when the STF tool open, there's an option to disable STF and that did the trick!
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 6 лет назад
Sorry for the late reply. If you haven't already, you have two options: If your RGB files are in one colour image, use LRGBCombination, check off only the L checkbox, select your L image, and activate the tool onto the RGB image. If you've got 4 separate channels, use that same tool but have all L/R/G/B checkboxes checked, with the appropriate image for each channel.

@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 6 лет назад
It could be that an update changed the file preferences for the type of file you're using. If you're using RAW files off a DSLR, look on the left side of the screen for Format Explorer. Choose DSLR_RAW and at the bottom right hit "Edit Preferences". Make sure that "Create raw Bayer CFA image" is not checked. If it is, you will have to debayer your image manually before working in colour. While many people do this manual step, I've done a number of tests to debayer manually during the process itself, or to let PixInsight do it on import to see the difference. In no cases has it actually made a quality difference, and in each case I actually haven't been able to tell between the final image whether it was debayered or auto-debayered; even when they're side-by-side on screen. Usually when an update comes through that messes with the file import settings, I'll come to that preferences panel and hit de-Bayer RGB in the bottom left. This will reset all the settings above accordingly, so if you have manual changes you make (for example, I always make sure "no image flip" is checked off) you'll have to reactivate them after clicking that button.

I'm still having problems (it doesn't help that RU-vid is screwing up with my comment replies grrr, so I apologise if this appears twice!). When I get to the end and go to export to tiff, it warns me that the changes made will not be visible etc and the tiff file is just showing stars. It seems that the exported tiff is still linear, and I haven't made the image non linear. note: F12 does nothing on the Mac version of the software, so I can't turn off the STF this way.
@richardbloch6883
@richardbloch6883 6 лет назад
Again sorry for the late reply - the AutoStretch doesn't actually change the image data, it just changes how it appears. So if you work on something that's AutoStretched, and never did a stretch via HistogramTransformation (with AutoStretch OFF so you can see the real effects), that'd be why your image was linear. The AutoStretch is good for tools that need to be done on a linear image (noise reduction, deconvolution, etc.) but about 1/3 to 1/2 way through your process, you'll end up stretching and not returning to the AutoStretch until your next image.
