Basic Oil and Filter Change: 15 to 30 minutes ($70/$110/$145)
In this video I change the oil and filter on a 2003 Jaguar XJ8. It has the 4.0 motor. These procedures are the same for many cars. When I locate a better, more affordable source for the filters and oil bolt, I will post it here.

Very well done video. I have a 1998 Jaguar this really helped me. It is hotter in Arizona, my dealer recommended that I use Mobil 10W 40 oil and I am using a full synthetic oil which the dealer said was the one to use if you want the best possible oil in. With my bolt, my oil filter, and my full synthetic oil it ran me about 135 dollars which is a bit high, but like you said, worth it for a higher end vehicle.
@RobertDIY

Nicholas McConnell You should also know that oil changes for the car should be done every 10,000 miles, so keep that in mind.
@cirquedumike
@cirquedumike 6 лет назад
Nicholas McConnell im at 120,000 miles. I use 20w 50. The thicker the better for these engines. Dont use synthetic on high mileage Jags. They will actually cause oil leaks and burn oil

Robert DIY Can you tell me how I can check the transmission oil level. A mechanic put in a different transmission in the car and he claims that he over filled the transmission with the transmission fluid and he said it is still ok to drive the car like that. I need to know if it is really ok to drive it, or what can I do about the leaks. The leaks happen after the car is driving and I guess when the oil gets hot or something.

Hey Robert. Long time viewer. You helped me keep my '94 Volvo 850 turbo running very solid to this day. I did acquire a Jag XJR 2001 recently. You show a copy of the manual in this video for this specific Jaguar, however, mine did not come with one. I'm having trouble locating a website where I can download (for free?) any manual remotely close to my 2001 XJR. Do you happen to know of one online that I could download?? If you have a link, you would be my savior. Goes without saying: A website that doesn't charge for downloads would also be preferred. Thanks and god bless

One question: The oil pan drain bolt seems to be on the front face of the pan. Because of that, should you have the car on ramps? Doesn't that elevate the drain so that not all of the oil drains? 0

Man, it has 7 quarts. You'll get enough of the old oil out.
@Truesdale22

I used a jack to raised my car and after I unpluged the bolt, I then lowered the car and let it drained as much oil as I could. When it is done, I raised the car back up and plugged the bolt and installed the oil filter.

Funny how that pricy $23. dollar oil filter from the dealer looks exactly like the Fram one that I just bought for my Jag at O'Reilly's for $8. bucks. lol Only difference is how its painted. Just a note to Robert...I like your vids, but something costing more money from the dealer does not always mean its better.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 лет назад
Normal Guy Not ALWAYS but usually. The engineers that guide the manufacturing of the vehicle often take extra precautions to make sure things sold to the dealers are to perfect specs. While after market parts are made to "general standards" which maybe close. I'd rather be dead on that close in a lot of situation. May be the difference of a part lasting 30,000 and 70,000 miles. Or your head lasting 400,000 miles vs 90,000 miles.

I get my Bosch filters from ebay for $8 (free shipping). Most likely the factory filter is made by Bosch. My 2001 XJ8, with the same engine, uses Bosch Part# 72209WS. Note, Bosch is usually the go-to-brand for European cars.

Regarding the best oil to use, I took advice from my UK specialist who recommended Valvoline DuraBlend 5W-30 Premium semi-synthetic passenger car motor oil. I was told this is better than Castrol for this engine. www.valvolineeurope.com/english/products/engine_oils/durablend/cid(7552)/durablend_fe_5w-30 . The FE stands for Ford Engine which is what the Jaguar is. I actually bought DX1 in Australia, but it is the same. I used this and followed Roberts advice, and I am very pleased with the outcome. The cars engine sounds newer/quieter, feels smoother, and seems faster, or maybe I am just pleased! Thanks Robert.

Robert I have little problem with my car. Thermostat stuck open and its heater heats up water in thermostat housing and coolant temperature sensor which is located nearby. It's done when ignition is on, even before engine starts. Therefore ECU is foolled by wrong temp. giving by that Coolant temp. sensor. Engine is hard to start on lower temperatures outside. You can see that on my short video, just in 3 minutes CTS shows temperature 60 degrees C: ru-vid.com?video_id=TIRNTCEaEQw&video_referrer=watch Is it shortened to ground somwhere? Thermostat should heat on high engine load, I suppose, not just right on
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 лет назад
Hay Jacek: Not sure that I understand what you are writing but it sounds like you are experiencing hard starts due to a bad coolant temp sensor. Have you changed the thermostat and sensor? That is a common thing to do with older cars. If you have not done so already, change the sensor and see if that fixes your issue.
@jacekztelelefonu
@jacekztelelefonu 10 лет назад
Robert DIY I must make a little actualization. I just went to the car. Plug for thermostat heater was unplugged. And in testmode was just the same It looked like the coolant would be warmed by something. But It could'n because plug was not plugged. I think It may be the coolant temperature sensor. Just as You wrote. It is really weird stuff.
