Thanks for this very didactic video! One never stresses enough the importance of having a very good placement of the main features of the person before going further. It's a very common mistake to hurry it and rush into the details of the face, thinking that it's what will make most of the resemblance. The right shape of the face and the placement of its main elements are the backbone of the portrait and the foundation of its success (or failure). Probably the misconception comes from the fact that we see experienced artists who, after years of practice, can place the shapes near perfectly, almost without markings. It looks easy. It's not, and reality hits hard when one starts drawing. Nothing is more frustrating than having spent hours on a portrait and realize the likeness is not there, but we can't pinpoint what's wrong because the whole structure is off ! More time must been spent on early measurements for a better drawing and to train the eye. Thanks again, very useful!

You don't know how much you've helped me. I don't do digital art, I just draw and paint in a traditional way. But for some reason I've been trapped doing the grid method for years and I've just put off learning how to learn to do proportions properly. Thank you, I can't wait until the next time I draw now.

BRAVO!!!! mr yong--may i ask a question: my equipment and programs for art have become obsolete (purchased in 1995 so they lasted quite well!) and i am questioning do i buy new programs and cords chips etc--or do i purchase some sort of art electronic tablet? i am looking at my options--and am technically challenged. do you--or anyone else reading--have an opinion? suggestions? thanks so much!! and i thank you again for your simplified easy to follow instruction. my work is showing improvement :)

Good video. Clear explanations. And great example. May I suggest, though, that this isn't the only way to do it. THERE'S ALSO THE WAY PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT ARTISTS (whom I know) USE. Shape-based, not line-based. (I'm not as good a teacher as Yong Chen, but my Instagram Stories sheds a bit of light on the process. And, that said, I'd still study Yong Chen's videos.)
