This is really helpful. I just recently purchased this machine and I've never done machine quilting. I'm about to take a free motion quilting class and I didn't know this presser foot had 2 levels. Your videos are my bible for this machine. Thanks so much.
That's so nice of you! I'm thrilled to have an expert source for all things 9960! I'll let my friend Roberta know about these videos. She just got the same machine. Thanks again.
Just wanted to let you know, this is my first real sewing machine purchase, and I am teaching myself to sew using your videos. Thank you so much for your expertise (all these years later!) :D
I've been sewing since I was a kid. I just got a 9960 to replace my 774 Stylist from 1976. I'm so excited to learn the free motion embroidery. Thanks for your video series! It's really helpful. This machine is SO different from my oldie, but sewing is still the same. :-)
Thanks so much for your tutorials. My Singer Quantum 9960 is supposed to arrive in a couple of days. I am so excited! I have watched a couple of your tutorials and am so happy to know if I have any problems have I have someone to turn too. Thank you again.
Wow this is so helpful. I’m a fashion designer and I just ordered my 9960 yesterday as an upgrade for my upcoming collection. I’m watching all of your amazing videos. THANK YOU 😊
I'v had my machine for 2 years but I just took out the darning foot. I tried it and it was fun! My stitching, however, leaves a lot to be desired. My stitches were terrible. I guess that practice is the key. Thanks Roxanne for all your great videos. I don't think I would have tried this if I had not seen this video.
Thank you. I am getting to know the fun things I can do with my machine! I am about to o some quilting..other than stitch in the ditch with it and needed to see howit would work! I love this machine by the way..for so, so, many reasons. I have nake endless things for my cloth diapering grand kids! So amazingly versatile.
I just found your page on facebook and "liked" it. Thanks again. I had been thinking of taking a class for this machine, but all the local classes are for other brands and models of machines. I really appreciate your efforts and your videos are done well.
Thanks for this . U simplified it for me. I would definitely look online for the hook and practice. It's indeed lovely. Thanks once again. Following ur 9960 singer tutorials.
I haven't master this skill yet. I'll try again with what you suggest. Didn't think it was necessary to use interfacing but as I've seen on the demonstration that can help to make the stitches look even.
Hi Sandra. It takes time to master freemotion embroidery or quilting. It's just like anything else, the more you practice the better you will be. Enjoy it!
Hi gena, change your stitch length to 5 and loosen your top tension a little bit if you need too. Also use a heavier thread in your bobbin so it doesn't break when pulling the ruffle. If that doesn't work, consider getting a ruffle foot or attachment.
Yes, gena!! I'm sorry I didn't include that in my video. They do come right back up when you go back to normal stitching after you press the lever back to the right. I will update my blog to include that information. Thanks for the GREAT question!!
=) I am just glad that it wasn't broken! LOL yes I am sure your other newbie sewer like myself would be spared some panic if you put that in next blog haha....thanks! Love watching your videos!! I would love to see one on how to sew zipper into tote bag that is 3-4 inches from the top of bag...*hint hint* hehe
Hi, I am using my machine and using the lettering option, I love it. However, I'm wondering if I can raise the size of the font or if it's just the one default size? I really want to do bigger lettering. Would love your feedback. Thanks - Janet, Seattle WA
very welcome! =) I also am having trouble with the basting stitch. I needed to do it and pull the threads to cause a ruffle and I am just not able to do it with my 9960. I tried regular foot and the darning...I don't understand LOL
Hi Roxanne, I saw your video of the machine and thank you . I am now an owner of one. When I change to free motion foot, I am not sure I did it correct or not. Is the position of needle should be close to the inner foot( front ) or should be in the middle. But when I sew it didn't hit the foot but I just feel like it a little odd. Thank you
What's your overall impression of the machine? For me, once I saw it for $329 on Amazon a year ago, saw that it had some really high-end features like truly automatic tension (not just a knob that has an auto setting) and the tack down/threat cut button, I figured I should try it. I really like it now. The mechanic at the local shop says that since Viking Pfaff and Singer are all one company, this machine has a lot of Viking DNA. I couldn't find a full-sized machine (not a tiny one like some of the Brother line) anywhere with all of the features this one had-especially the thread cut, which is what I really wanted-for less than $500. Just curious how you feel about it since you've obviously used it quite a bit and know the ins and outs. :) Thanks, Travis
I honestly had this machine for a year now. It's my favorite sewing machine ever. I use it all the time and it's the best investment ever!!!! I sewed through layers of high density foam through the machine and it didn't even break a needle. I sewed my prom dress and all sorts of projects on it. It's easy to clean and take apart. My mom who doesn't know anything about sewing machines, and she can use it. The only thing that bugs me about it the machine is the letters that come with the machine are very small. Other then that it wonderful machine and I highly recommend it.
Do you have any tips on stopping my upper thread from shredding? My upper thread continues to break after just a few seconds of free motion quilting. I have changed the needle, no help. I have adjusted the tension, no help. I have purchased high end thread, no help. I am using the bobbins that came with the machine. I love this machine for all other sewing, and have had no problems except for when I attempt FMQ.
Hi Thomas and Nancy. One of our professional quilter recommends a topstitching needle. You also may be moving the fabric too fast. Try and keep your rhythm steady. FMQ takes patience, persistence and practice.
@@RoxanneStitches I have done FMQ for many years. I changed needles and am still having thread shredding. UGH! I am very dissatisfied with my purchase of this machine.
I understand your frustration. Maybe it's best for you to reach out to Singer directly since I'm not a spokes person for them? OR return the machine since you're very dissatisfied. Plenty of others love this machine for FMQ so maybe this machine just isn't a good fit for you. Good luck!!
Were your showing to drop the feed dogs, On My Machine, is a whole.. no marking No button to move. This has me confused... is there something wrong with my machine?? Is there another place the feed dogs drop on the singer 9960?? don't know what to do? Can I set my stitch length to zero, and work with it free motion anyway?? Can You Please advise. Thanks in advance.
Hi Kathleen. Go to 1:30 in the video. I show exactly how to lower the feed dogs. If you want to raise them back up, push the lever back over and turn the handwheel one full rotation towards you.
Hello, I have a query. I understand that Singer 9960 doesn't do embroidery monograms filled up with stitches to be bold. Can we use the appliqué method instead? For example to draw the monogram on a fabric, cut it, use the interface to iron it on another fabric and then stitch around the edge of the monogram to secure the monogram appliqué. Can we do this with 9960? Thank you for your help.
On every other machine I've used for FMQ, I've set the stitch length to 0. Is it possible to trick this machine into 0 (zero) stitch length? I've had my machine about 2 years and still haven't found a way. It's shredding my thread. I've re-threaded, checked humidity, changed needles. I don't know what else it could be. It's very finicky with Poly/Cotton blend threads that are used in FMQ.
Melanie Varela HI Melanie! I'm by no means an expert when it comes to FME or FMQ. This video was simply a starting point for those with the 9960 to begin to learn. FME or FMQ take time to learn. It's more of a "feel" and practice than anything else. You will find your rhythm and right combo of thread, needle, machine settings and speed. If you're on FB, please come and join our group. We have members that are Superior in these techniques and are very willing to share advice. facebook.com/groups/SingerQuantumStylist9960Fans/
+Melanie Varela Hello, Just noticed your comment about the thread. I have the 9960 and fmq all the time on it. I just lower the feed dogs and don't set the speed to as fast as it can go. When I did I always had a nest underneath. I set the speed dial to 3/4 of way to fastest. The stitchees on back come through clean. I also use aurifil thread 50 wt if that helps.
Can you tell me if and where a clear, open faced free motion foot can be found for the 9960? A closed metal one comes with machine but it's suggested by many that you can see your work easier with an open toe foot.
Hi Becky. A clear plastic free motion foot sounds great! The 9960 uses most standard low shank presser feet. Is it possible for you to ask those that have suggested it, where to purchase one? I would love to know as well. Thanks
+Becky King, I know you asked this question a year ago but I'm just now seeing it. If you'll go to Leah Day's website, www.leahday.com, she sells the clear open free motion foot. Once you receive it, you will need to cut the plastic between the red lines at the front of the foot. This will give you a clear view of what you are working on. I believe she has a video either on her website or on RU-vid showing this. You'll love the foot. Good luck.
Hi Kathalean The Singer 9960 is not an embroidery machine. It's a sewing machine with letter and number stitch options that are preset into the machine. They are not able to be edited.
Having problems with stitch 103 for darning. Something is not right. Machine keeps stopping. Seems as if the needle is hitting the side of the foot. Can you help?
Hi Ginny. No. The singer 9960 isn't an embroidery machine. It's a computerized machine with letter and number stitch options that are preset into the machine.
Hallo Ilka! Nicht sicher, was Sie mit Schablonen quilten? Gut, dass Sie meine Videos hilfreich gefunden haben, auch wenn sie nicht in Ihrer Sprache sind. Glückliches Nähen !!
***** I'm having problems with the tension. I have adjusted it up and down without luck. Any advice? Am I moving the quilt to quickly? The lower stitch is very tangled and loose.
Can this machine auto embroidery. I don't want to free hand. I want do some quilting lables. I don't want to free hand them. And can I add designs to my machine that I might come up with
Hi Angels. The Singer 9960 is NOT an embroidery machine. It's a sewing machine with letter and number stitch options. Yes you can use the preset programmed letter and number stitches to do quilting labels. It does a beautiful job making labels. Happy Sewing!!
Just got my 9960, lowered my feed dogs and then it seemed they didn't want to come back up! I was so scared, and almost called Singer, but then I decided to try to do straight stitch, and it seemed it was ok. sewed fine...is this normal?
Hello - I am looking for a specific stitch it is hearts I found it on the Brother HC1850. Does this machine have that stitch. I wish I could post the picture
Hi June, I'm not familiar with the Brother stitches. Yes the 9960 does have a heart stitch. If you'd like to see it, the PDF manual is free on the Singer site and it lists all the stitches.
I found it. I am a beginner sewer, but am interested in the different stitches for top stitching baby blankets I am making. Is this machine difficult to use.
I bought mine from a seller on Amazon also. As a rule I do check all feedback seriously when buying something like this from any online site. I love my machine!
зингер 9960, кто видел мастерклссы по использованию нескольких видов декоративных строчек? Чтобы получилась полоса 3-4-5 см с красивым, комбенированым орнаментом. Дайте ссылку плиз!
