In this video, I’m wearing one of our own “Tool-O-Rama Anvil” aprons that we designed and created from Zazzle. Our new “Tool-O-Rama” Anvil design features everything a metalsmith might want or need in their studio. As metalsmiths and professors, we’ve been creating each individual tool graphic over the years to embellish our studios and handouts. Hi, James. Thank you for this very informative video. I'm working on a project and started researching grits, safety, etc. of sanding metal. Your video is very helpful as you leave no stone unturned and give insights that I've not seen in any other sanding metal videos. I really appreciate it! 🙏

Great video and advice, thank you! I've recently gotten into restoring old tools and I keep seeing scratches on my final work, guess i dind't sand enough or rotate direction, never thought to do that

Hey can you give me an advice what i should get to sand a comb so it's most comfortable to use? I just started on making handcrafts with no experience so far

What material are you making combs out of and how are you cutting them out? Tumblers/mass finishing is used in industrial/high production situations. You could certainly handsand each tooth but that will probably take too long? I'm happy to help--you can always directly message me with images & more questions. Good luck!👍

James I have a short piece of 6061 1/4” wall 2”. 51mm exact. I need it to be 49mm to fit my project. Can I use a sander and rotate to shave off 2mm? Or use 60 grit sandpaper? Tnx

Personally, I would use a lathe. 2mm is a lot of material to remove by sanding. Good luck!

I am looking to buy a new palm ✋ sander , the one where the disk of sandpaper stick right on the surface of the machine, and you just smack it on and start sanding. Do you know a good brand, not cordless, one with a plug 🔌. Thanks Mike

@@diecast_MikeEspo I confess that I prefer DeWalt but I'm sure others would debate endlessly what their favorite brand is. Porter-Cable is another very reliable brand.

Hi, James, how would I know when I am finished sanding the metal? What highest grit should I be going up to? Thanks!

Final finishing depends on your needs and the design of the piece. I recommend sanding to at least 400 grit but I usually sand to 600 grit. You have finished each grit when you have removed all the scratches from the previous grit (remember it helps to rotate the direction of your sanding). I hope that helps?

If I understand you correctly, you want to sand the inside of a hole? You can certainly wrap sand paper around a round dowel to sand the inside of a hole. There are also lots of great products (abrasive wheels, etc.) for sanding the inside of holes. Let me know if that helps and how it goes!
