I bought some tools years ago at a flea market and thought they were just chisels! I just go a lathe for my birthday and it's great fun! I was able to figure out my gouge, but now, thanks to you I know that I have a Skew and a parting tool! Great video! Thanks!

Thank you. My kids are growing up and I have time to find a hobby now that I'm getting older. I took shop in high school and really enjoyed the wood working parts but that was 35 years ago 😬. I've been whittling comfort birds and want to try something different so I'm thinking about trying to make some bowls. Your video was useful for letting me know what to expect.

I have been watching many vids for the lathe. This is probably one of the best ones I have found that actually talks about how to actually start with, including the tool rest. Great vid, hope you make many more. I am a beginner for the lathe. Great vid.

Hi there - new to wood turning and currently restoring my grandfather's lathe. It's the exact same lathe as this, question... Looking through the manual, what is the plunger for and how do you remove it? (Gotta clean the rust off it). Thanks and greath vid :)

A most excellent video!!! I just bought a used Craftsman lathe identical to yours and I'm completely new to lathe turning. You provided many good tips and a boat load of valuable information in your video - all of which is extremely valuable to me. Thank you so much for such a tremendous video. (Would you happen to know where I can obtain parts for this lathe?)

We’ve really been enjoying this craftsman lathe. One modification that we made was changing the motor to a variable speed motor. We got this motor from an old treadmill and we used the speed control that came with the unit. It is possible to change the speed with the belts, we feel this was one of the biggest improvements. The next big improvement was the live center, This is the part that spins with a ball bearing on the other side of the motor. Without the Live center you need to make sure that you have oil against the center spike and the wood you’re spinning. I think we pick this up on Amazon for about $15. The more you get into it the more you’ll appreciate the little improvements. The size of this lathe is really nice, we just spun down a handle out of an apple wood log to make a blacksmith and hammer. We also polished hydraulic cylinders to a chrome finish. You never know what you’re going to use this equipment for until you have it. Hopefully this answers some of your questions, enjoy!

This was really informative but no one has really taken the time to actually show the wood getting mounted on the lathe. I know you spoke about cutting the X in the wood but what about the tail stock. Does that actually remain stationary throughout the entire turning process? You added oil onto it but is that so the wood doesn't burn? Do I find center with the X and pound that in then slide the tail stock back into position and tighten it? Thanks for sharing all this great info..... Jody G

By the way I just acquired the same lathe. But it came without the Locking nut to hold the bit in place. I am wondering where I could get one. I'm not sure what to call it to look on eBay etc. Thanks again!

My Great Grandpa had a woodshop that was left to nothing in my backyard, I've been restoring it and the majority of things still work. But my great grandpa took ALL guards off of all the machines. So for my lathe which is almost 80 years old, does not have a tool rest

Restoring old tools, especially ones that have been in the family for a while as always fun. It’s always better when the machine has a story to tell

Question: I just bought a lathe like this, I'm trying to take the spur off so I can put on a chuck jaw but mine doesnt have the hex nut I see there at 29 seconds, it's just threads where the nut should be, so how do I get the spur out without that nut being there?

I'm thankful for you putting the thought into my head of the tool getting caught and flung due to the tool rest being too far away from the work-piece. I try my best to keep the rest as close as I can to what I'm turning, but accidents can happen to anyone, so I'll gladly keep that in mind. Thank you!
